I'm so delighted to see anyone doing Waterboys reactions, but especially this gem. It gets little attention, it seems to me, but it is such a gorgeous, moving song. Always brings a little tear to me eye.

I can't believe that this isn't talked about all the time as one of the great pop/rock works. It's easily in my top 10 all time songs.

It's from the 1980s, but it sure doesn't sound like "'80s music." This is one of my favorite bands, and I'm so glad SOMEbody on KZbin is reacting to them.

Steve Wickham, plays Violin/Fiddle. The riff was a song called River Road Reel (I think) by a player called Charlie Lennon, who let them use it.

I haven’t watched it yet, but this is one of my all time favourite Waterboys songs, or the alternative version ‘Killing my Heart’

I became a massive fan of the Waterboys in the 80s. Fisherman's Blues was a turning point from indie to folk which I wasn't sure about at first, but grew to love, and everything since. I couldn't recommend a favourite song, as there are so many. I have to agree with an earlier comment that this is not Americana, this is music from an ancient Isle with a vast history, and music that was no doubt taken to America with migration. Thanks for reacting to a band that doesn't get a lot of worthy attention, other than Whole Of The Moon. Check out the likes of Red Army Blues. A Pagan Place. This Is The Sea. Savage Earth Heart etc. You won't be disappointed

There is. An alternative version, where the chorus is, ‘you’ll be killing my heart, when you go away’

This is from the period when Mike Scott under the influence of Steve Wickham decamped to Spiddal, County Galway, Ireland, and immersed himself in Irish Traditional Music - this is not Americana ( as other knowledgeable individuals have pointed out ). There is no Dobro - the stringed instruments are Fiddle, Guitar, Bouzouki, and Slide Mandolin. Highly recommended Waterboy's albums are A Pagen Place (Rags, A Pagen Place), This is the Sea (The Pan Within, Old England), Fisherman's Blues (Strange Boat, And a Bang on the Ear) The Complete Fisherman's Blues Sessions boxed set, The Secret Life of..., Room to Roam, and Dream Harder. The two solo albums by Mike Scott - Bring' em all in, and Still Burning are also superb.

Interesting that I bought Bring 'em All In many, many years ago and without knowing his The Waterboys connection. - Greg

Mike Scott's pure songwriting genius. And what's even better, the last 3 albums he's back on tops! If you want to check out some of the later stuff, live: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bonWqYqXdpySrbM

Scottish and Irish sound, which is partially where Americana sound comes from.

Love The Waterboys and Mike Scott. I scrolled through your videos to find your prior reaction to them. But I don’t see it. Did it get blocked?

The bing lounge live version is really good. The newer versions with brother Paul on keyboards are not so good.

Mike Scott is a serious talent and a top bloke as well. For me, I was one of those luddites that didn't like the style change when this album came out. However, the title track Fisherman's Blues is probably one of the most beautiful songs they have ever done. I'm a huge fan of their first 3 albums, particularly This Is the Sea. Worth checking out Because The Night/The Pan Within from Glastonbury '86. You'll easily find it on KZbin. Really special. Nice recommendation Anonymous.

@@rickb.4168 Absolutely. They totally explode into the song after the intro. Top stuff - I saw them in '89 at Glastonbury. Superb.
