I am also certain you will enjoy reading “A Song for Arbonne” by Guy Gavriel Kay after reading this book! 😉 I do have some names/terms that I would love to hear the entomology behind, Professor: Rudumanu? Stanflet? Hraedflyht? Sweothol? Dwola? Sigseld? (“Fire of Victory”?) Widuru? Andumaic? Thjoth? Sibwaru? Riodara? Thulhan? (Thule?) Minulhan? Derahan?

@@MacScarfield Most of these are Old English or made up. Additionally, Galdor is from OE (magic). I recalled only later Tolkien used the name for a minor character. Rudumanu: OE Red mane. Stanflet: OE Stone floor. Hraedflyht: OE Swift flight. Sweothol: OE Flame. Dwola: OE Ghost. Sigseld: OE Victory hall. Widuru: OE Wide door. Thjoth is a variant of the OE theod, meaning the people or the folk. You see variants in Dutch and Deutsch. The Andumaic words, including Andumaic, I pretty much made up. Cheers!

This was such a hoot! I laughed more during this than any other panel on BookTube I recall. I find myself wishing that Philip and I had our discussion about The Severing Son after I'd read The Way of Edan. The two are quite different, and yet there's quite a bit that's similar. For one, we both feature female MCs that readers routinely call their favorite character; and it's true when we appraise each other, as well--Sequara is my favorite and Philip called Elan his favorite. And we both have young male protagonists who are often indecisive and/or inconsistent. But Philip, if you read this I'm sure you'll agree, there is a major difference in that regard (one that I don't think is too spoilery): one of you (Merphy, I think) said something about Dayraven's inconsistency being due to his always wanting to do the right thing. My young male equivalent (Vahldan) does NOT have this going for him. 😂 Thanks to all of you for the laughs and insights, and extra thanks to Johanna for hosting. Also, if I was ever a little envious of Philip for having all of you cool BookTubers as friends to read and discuss his debut, y'all have disabused me of that inclination, lol.

We might've been a little hard on Philip due to familiarity from so many previous discussions with him, but we were all impressed with his book! I'm busy over the next couple of days but hopefully get to this discussion over the weekend. I finished The Way of Edan on the day after it released. It was a page turner. Philip Chase's storytelling reminded me most of Tad Williams and Robert Jordan. Urd was my favorite character. I wish we got more of her and Sequara in the story. The political intrigue among the priests and the politicians was my favorite storyline to follow. Looking forward to hearing the discussion on this book. Thanks for uploading it!

This discussion was both super insightful and just tons of fun, you guys are the best!! I love that everyone had such a good experience with the book, though I honestly wasn't expecting anything else, haha. I am totally with you and Allen that you could feel Philip's voice in the book, but not in a negative or overly obvious way. As Merphy said, it's just that I have heard him talk about the themes he enjoys in stories so often that I could notice the way he had incorporated them into his own story. Anyway, Sequara was also absolutely my favourite character, I would honestly have loved even more chapters with her! And Joruman was a close second, but more so because I thought he was the most interesting and volatile character. And I can't wait for Allen's narration, I am for sure going to re-read the book by listening to the audio!! I think there's lots of re-read value in this series and I love that. Thanks for sharing this discussion, I loved it!! 🤩

Sounds like you and I had a very similar experience! I thought of Philip the whole time with every theme and even with how harmonious the character relationships were 😄. Sequara followed by Joruman-yes! I would put the elf slightly above those two, but I lived for their chapters! I will be destroyed if he kills Sequara in book 2. I'm so excited to read your review, Esmay!

I'm mind-blown! 🤯🤯🤯 Did you share this with Philip? I don't know what else to say except that this is amazing, and I feel like I did a disservice not acknowledging how many influences were woven into this story! It must've taken extraordinary skill to utilize these terms in a seamless, organic way. My guess is that these influences enhanced the story in subtle ways overlooked by less knowledgeable readers (such as me).

My only defense is that I have lately read/watched several of these sources within the last years: Tolkien’s “Finn & Hengist”, Matthew Harffy’s “Bernicia Chronicles” (if you enjoyed Bernard Cornwell and “The Warlord Chronicle”, I would recommend checking it out!), Fritz Lang’s “Nibelungen” (amazing silent movie-duology, essentially the first big epic fantasy films!) and the “Northman” movie last year, so this was essentially me going as the Leo DiCaprio meme “I know that from somewhere”. Obviously I did not now everyone, but it put me in the right places to look for the rest!
