Jill Craigie's semi-documentary about the the rebuilding of Plymouth after the Blitz. Includes footage of Plymouth councillors debating 'The Plan for Plymouth' drawn up by James Paton-Watson and largely rubber-stamped by Sir Patrick Abercrombie. The Copperwheat family is portrayed by a cast of talented amateurs.
Craigie went on to marry Plymouth Devonport's labour MP, Michael Foot, in 1949.
A note about "Verena Chaffé, War Widow" who plays Mrs Copperwheat:
Verena Joyce Chaffé (née Gillard) was born in East Stonehouse in 1904, the daughter of a stonemason working at the Royal Dockyard. She married Herbert William Chaffé in 1924.
Herbert was born in Crediton in 1902. Too young to serve in the Great War, he joined the Royal Navy in 1920 for twelve years. He joined up again in the Second World War and served as an Electrical Artificer, First Class, on HMS 'Bonaventure'. He died at sea on 31 March 1941 when HMS 'Bonaventure' was torpedoed and sunk south of Crete by the Italian submarine 'Ambra'. He is remembered on the Naval War Memorial on Plymouth Hoe.
Verena died in 1947 at 64 Peverell Park Road, Plymouth, aged only 45.
