Just found this video, while planning my trip to Sturgis 2018. I’ve made the trip from Gulfshores Alabama to Sturgis South Dakota and beyond three times. Never had a chase vehicle, never trailered, I’ve ridden my bike. 2010, 2012, and 2015, the longest was 2012 I burned up 6700 miles in 24 days. The best trip,,, the next trip. There is something spiritual about a long open road, after all the excitement, and worries of planning, packing, picking a route, and rolling out the first 300 plus miles, the road becomes a friend. The people who are with you become a family, the scenery becomes your living room, and the destination matters not. Thank you for making the video. I’m inspired.

I've always lived on the east coast United States, and the western parts of the country have always intrigued me. I'm physically challenged, and I've ridden on the back of a Harley but never driven one. The nice folks at Departure Bike Works in Chesterfield Virginia took me for a spin on one of their Harleys. It was wonderful.

I live in the western us and I'm so thankful. I've only been east of the Rockies a couple of times and never east of the Mississippi. You should consider relocating, life is short.

The Bandit is right. Relocate, you won't regret it. I grew up on the East coast DelCo Pa. Up and down the coast til I was 20. Then.....Cali....Colorado......Montana. it's where I'll live out my daze. Too many humans and humidity back East. It's where I'm from but I love the West and I'm stayin.

Your vid captures what it's like to grab life by the horns and roll. My crew rolled out to Sturgis in 2017. Started in Saratoga, NY. 1,900 miles and change and 4 days on my '16 Breakout. No windshield. No fairing. No excuses. I was 59 and doing it again for the 80th. Four wheels move the body, but two move the soul. Roll on brothers and sisters keep it shiny side up. 💀👊🇺🇸

Been to Sturgis many times, I was there for the 75th. I may go this year, not sure yet. I've ridden a Harley since 1978. Prior to that I rode a Triumph Bonneville. My wife also rides a Harley, she has a 2012 Dyna and I have a 2014 Road King. if it's bigger than a Road King it's an RV and I don't want it. My rules for riding: 1. Ride by yourself, or with a significant other that has her own motorcycle. Packing someone on the rear ruins a good ride. 2. Never ride with a group, the more people the more bullshit arguing about where to stop, how long to stop, what route, etc. 3. It's the journey not the destination, anyone can jump on a scooter and ride 700 mile days, on an interstate slab, but my days are never planned, I never know where I'll end up. Avoid interstates, use secondary roads, eat at Mom and Pop places. There's times I've stopped to eat and ended up staying there for several hours bullshitting with the owner or someone else at the place I was eating. Got to know them, etc. 4. Never get up early like at 4 or 5 or 6 or even 7 to leave. That's like having to work. I get up when I wake up and sometimes don't leave till 10 or 11. I'm not a guy who has to go from point A to B and never stop and see or talk to anyone between those two points. And this goes back to never ride in a group, just with one other person who sees the world exactly as you do. 5. Avoid states with helmet laws--I avoid Nebraska like the plague because it has a helmet law. Riding a motorcycle is inherently dangerous, if you want to make it more safe stay home on the couch. 6. Make sure your concealed carry permit is valid in all the states you go through. Avoid those states where it's not, if you can. If not carry anyway, fuck em. 7. Take your camping gear so if you want to camp out you can. 8. Take the time to make it a fun trip. We take a month to go to Sturgis from where we live. It's about 1,100 miles to Sturgis from where I'm at --if you take the shortest route recommended by google maps. It usually ends up being about 1,600 or more miles the way we go, because we always pick secondary roads, and stop when and where it feels right. And we go a different way each time. A typical ride to Sturgis for us is about a month. We get there a week prior to when it starts, get to our campground. Set up our camp and then head out to explore the area in SD, and nearby WY for a week. Then back to Sturgis for a week for a little more fun. We stay in the same campground every year and have gotten to know a lot of the regulars who ride in from various states and Canada who stay there. So lots of people and stories to catch up on. Then hit the road for home, again taking a week and a half or so to get home. I've turned down lots of people who want to go with us because I know how they ride and it wouldn't last for more than a day before I was telling them "bye". I've never ridden with a "chase" vehicle but I have a feeling the guys who are riding the choppers, with a gallon and a half gas tanks have someone carrying a lot of extra gas for them. Choppers look cool, some of them, but only having a cruising range of about 50 miles sucks. So there you have it, my rules of the road for travelling, not just to Sturgis but for any long trip like to Daytona, etc.

Very Well put together video, I am so glad to see the tradition carries on to the younger generations, Its not about the destination, its all about the ride there and the peeps you meet along the way. by the way, rode a sporty with a peanut tank from Kansas in 1982 lottsa stops for fuel and a shout out to the farmer in western Neb. that had a gas can in the back of his pick up truck.
