The Weather Station

Күн бұрын

The Weather Station's S/T album is out October 6, 2017 on Paradise of Bachelors (worldwide), Outside Music (Canada), & Spunk Records (AU/NZ).
Preorder LP/CD (worldwide): www.paradiseofb...
Other options (LP/CD/download/streaming): smarturl.it/PoB35
On her fourth (and tellingly self-titled) album as The Weather Station, Tamara Lindeman reinvents, and more deeply roots, her extraordinary, acclaimed songcraft, framing her precisely detailed, exquisitely wrought prose-poem narratives in bolder and more cinematic musical settings. The result is her most sonically direct and emotionally candid statement to date, a work of profound urgency and artistic generosity.
Credits:
Produced by Maya Bankovic
Cinematography by Maya Bankovic
Directed by Tamara Lindeman
Edited by Joële Walinga
Additional Editing by Colin Medley
Colour Correction by Meeka McLean

All I can say, after playing this song over and over and over, is that it feels like literature has found a melody. Beautiful work. Beautiful words. I am in tears.

"There was a time when you put your hand on the small of my back. I was surprised that you touched me like that. But there in your hand was a current of life I could hardly stand. I stayed still, and I didn’t mention it, or if I did, I made some kind of joke of it. It was strange-how I could feel so sane, so plain when you’re around. And unbidden to me, there it rose, the fantasy, colored rose and easy; yeah, I could see it so simple, unsubtle-impossible, clearly. And strange, far and as close as the mountain range on the horizon driving all day. There I was so sane-so plain-after everything." This is absolutely brilliant. Jitters, intensity, at the start of a relationship, when you find that one person, beautiful! Hope we have folk festivals again, on our list for sure!!

I’d like to give a shout out to whomever directed this video. Great job! Nice lingering shots. Profile shots were grand. Frontal shots were very nice. Black and white is a nice touch. And it’s refreshing to see a music video that doesn’t change perspective every 3 seconds

Superb lyric: There was a time when you put your hand on the small of my back. There I was so sane-so plain-after everything. Gas came down from a buck twenty-the joke was how it broke the economy anyhow. The dollar was down, but my friends opened businesses; there were new children. And again, I didn’t get married; I wasn’t close to my family; and my dad was raising a child in Nairobi-she was three now, he told me. Gas stations I laughed in, I noticed fucking everything: the light, the reflections, different languages, your expressions. We would fall down laughing, effervescent, and all over nothing, all over nothing. Just as though it was a joke, my whole life through, all of the pain and the sorrow I knew, all of the tears that had fallen from my eyes; I can’t say why. We walked in the park; under the shade, I avoided your eyes. I was ashamed of my own mind, no SSRIs, my day as dark as your night. Oh, you got the kindest of eyes, I cannot help but notice sometimes, but you know as do I, I cannot look twice without falling right into the sweet and tender line between something that can and can never be. And just then an ambulance passed on the street, and you took my arm reflexively. That was the year I was thirty. That was the year you were thirty-one. That was the year we lost, or we won. That was the year I was thirty. That was the year you were thirty one. That was that year-now here, now here, is another one.

To me, channeling Fairport Convention at their most raucous (guitars really similar to Richard Thompson's style) much more than Joni Mitchell, but regardless she's a great talent. I saw her live on the Mountain Stage a few months ago, and it was a great performance. Didn't notice how great the lyrics are when she played this song, though. I'm glad someone posted them here

Powerful song, and video. The song's about a relationship with one individual, so made me wonder about solely men in the audience. A comment on a divide between women and men in general? Not sure if there's a definitive interpretation or answers, but it definitely makes you think. More importantly (for me, anyway), I just love the lyrics, and the story, and the honesty of it all.

Maybe they represent her past romantic partners and that is why they are in the shadows and look unimpressed as all of those relationships ended but they still "watch her" like we can still follow our past friends on social media.

Interesting interpretation, and it definitely works with the imagery. The other weird thing is some of the guys getting restless or nervous, or chatting in the back, as the song goes on, like they're uncomfortable or lost interest. (Or are gossiping on social media!)

The group of men is not very diverse, there are no very old or very young men, there are no very fat or very athletic men, they are about the same age as the singer. I would rather think they represent all of the men the singer had or wanted to have a romantic relationship with.
