This is amazing, the only thing me and probably a lot of other people want is a way to pull tracks off the disc. If I could do that this would be a really solid portable stereo mic recorder.

@@kbobiller Unfortunately some players do not work fine because they use a slightly modified version of the NetMD protocol. Are you using a deck like the JB 980?

@@StefanoBrilli ​ I'm using a Sony Net MD MZ-N710, had it from new, hadn't used it for many years. I just tried it again and it's working, transferring like a champ. The day it didn't work it did work with platinum-md; it didn't seem to matter if I unplugged and then reconnected, closed/reopened Edge/Chromium, nothing worked. But it's working now, a day later. No clue what the difference is! I'm a software developer myself so I understand how frustrating such a report is. Thanks for the reply and the software!

This is useful if you can load REAL SP quality to the MiniDisc unlike the SonicStage which will only give you "fake" SP when you transfer the music files via SonicStage in SP quality. I will try it 😁

Can I ask if there will be a way of FF or RW through a track by clicking and holding on it with the mouse? Like when you press and hold the FF or RW on the player to scrub through a track? Amazing work Stefano! I just tested it out on my Linux laptop and it worked great, except there is a very small gap between tracks, even when the original recording didn't have one. I listen to a lot of Progressive music where the track transitions are seamless so this is not ideal. Can it be fixed?

This is a really nice and needed app! Thanks! Obvious bit of advice which helped me: Set up a new folder for your minidisc contents somewhere in your home folder. You can then do pre-work there - such as concatenating tracks if you want gapless playback - without messing up your music library. You can also set up the whole disc from that one folder so you can do the upload to recorder at one session rather than keep having to go back to add tracks from different folders. This also allows you to prer-plan what you are going to record because it'll warn you when you're going bigger than the disc will take A second advantage of using this system is that it automatically bypasses the Sony automatic gain control built into the MD recorder - so you don't get the quiet scratchy clicky start and tail of old LPs in amplified form before and after tracks Stefano: Please can you say which ATRAC you use for the SP upload? I'm presuming the latest ATRAC R version (ATRAC S is - I believe - used for LP" and LP4 only)

Looking at the list of the devices supported by the original linux-minidisc project, your device should work fine. Unfortunately, I only have my MZ-N710 so cannot really say that it will surely work. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.

I have a Sony MZ-NHF800 and it will read a regular mini disc. however it will not be able to read a HI-MD disc. Is there another way to read the disc? I thank you for your help and your wizardry!

I know he states it does not work with Hi-MD units or Non-Sony brand units. Also it doesn't work with most iOS (Apple) operating systems. Just a regular Sony NetMD Minidisc. Hope this helps!

So far my favorite app. Just doesn't always work on my MacBook air. It crashes out when the computer goes to sleep. I do have a way to prevent it from sleeping but have to use my ipad. Love the CSV file upload and download. I recorded through optical and easily added the text.

Hi there! Unfortunately there's no official list of supported devices. Keep in mind that this is a reverse engineering project and I've been able to test it only with my mz-n710. A lot of people reported that the app is working fine with many other NetMD devices as well, and I've planned to put together some FAQs and build a list of known supported devices. However, until I find the time to work on this, the best place to look for is the /r/minidisc subreddit.

Let me start by thanking you for your efforts and work. I just want to report my experience with the software for anybody that happens to read this. I'm able to take WAV files and transfer them to the WMP page thus the NF610, but it won't sound as it should. "Muddy" for the lack of a better word. This is perhaps due to the age of the recorder but does record as it should. As long as I'm able to continue to record to the NF610 and play them on a deck, I'm more than satisfied. It's quick and easy and it works. However, the page only works for me on my Macs. One is a Ventura and the other is a Catalina; it's all I have. Edge seems to work as well as Chrome does. I was on the cusp of restoring an old XP machine just for this, but this is much better for my minidiscs. Also, I noticed that the NF610 doesn't use as much battery doing it this way. I recorded a 74-minute album on SP (80-minute disc) and listened to it and the battery meter is still full when it shouldn't. Normally it would be halfway used. Thanks for doing this for the rest that can't.

Unfortunately I don't know which devices are working fine... I've tested only with my mz-n710 and received a few good reports for others portable devices. Unfortunately I received a few reports that the app is not working fine with some decks. The best way to be 100% sure is to ask someone who has such a deck to test the app for you.

I am a novice video editor, and the with all the mistakes made during the shooting it was too complicated for me to edit it together. Sorry. I wiped one of my disks using this program. But when I try to record anything it says there's an error uploading and that the disc might be full. It's a Sony MZ-N420D that got little use when I bought it in '04. And hasn't been used in about 12 -14 years. I had to press the play and skip buttons several times before they started working consistently. The stop button still won't work. There's yellowing on the white plastic parts from smoke. I've got JVC 74's and Sony 80 minidiscs. Any ideas what my be stopping the recording process? I can address the other issues. I only included them for context. P.S. I made sure to wipe down the discs with a microfiber cloth and gently clean the lazer with a q-tip and 90% alcohol, before I did anything else with it.

I think this is the way to go: By using a web application you have put a lot of the functionality of the Sony software to a portable platform which can be used on different operating systems. This is better than what Sony ever had! Would it be possible to extract recorded sound to the host system, thus creating MP3- or WAV-files from recordings?

Hello Isaac. I'm not an expert, but digital upload via USB should be possible only for the mz-rh1. Unfortunately I do not own such device, so I haven't had the chance to mess with uploads. However, if your computer has a line-in audio jack, you can connect it to the audio output of your MD device. Then, after selecting the track that you want to extract, click on "record". This will start the playback on the MD and the audio recording on your PC. At the end, a wav file is created with the analog recording of the MD playback output.
