My favorite part is the moment he caught her before she fell. I think he's going to be an amazing husband once they get to know each other. It has to be very awkward to be thrust into a situation where you're married to a complete stranger. I feel so bad for Lingyi. He's been around scheming women for so long that he's automatically suspicious of Shiyi. You can see from her reaction that she was a little hurt/offended that he thought she was apart of her sister's plan to stop Lianfang from becoming the his legal wife. His guards are up/it's going to make it harder for them to find common ground.

He was ahead of his time. Most men in this situation back then/even now wouldn't even care about her feelings. He gave her time/space and didn't pressure her. He knew how hard it was for her to marry into the unknown. Their brief interactions before the marriage gave him a glimpse into her personality/character. Even though he wasn't in love with her yet she left an impression...lol I've always thought that he started feeling something towards her when they met on the pier/then when she scolded him for talking about her late mother.

Any man who isn’t behaving like a gentleman, even really powerful ones, would be losing face in society. That was the real situation back then. Don’t listen to misandrist propaganda. @@luceafarul579 I wasn't referring to his treatment of her outside of the home or in front of other people. My reference was towards how he gave her time/space and didn't pressure her about sex. It was/still is expecting for women to perform their wifely duties in/outside of the bedroom. During this time procreating was very important for the continuation of the family bloodline. His mother wanted him to reproduce which is one of the reasons she told him to spend time with his concubines. He tried several times to be intimate with her/every time she pulled away he didn't force the issue. He took a step back/waiting for her to be ready. It's the reason that I say he was ahead of his time.

@@shontelagrone8713 well first of all, the expectation to reproduce is on BOTH men AND women. If a man married a woman he didn’t like he would still be expected to initiate the sex. Now imagine if you were a dude in his shoes. You are told you must initiate sex with a woman you don’t want to have sex with, but it’s on YOU who must initiate the sexual relationship simply because you are a man, that it is your duty to do so, can you imagine the pressure you’d be under? And second of all, it’s also not true that a man would basically force himself upon her as a general rule if the woman didn’t want sex. That was actually one of the main reasons for why men were allowed to have multiple wives because vast majority of the reason for the formal marriage was about alliances rather than procreation. That was why men could take concubines in case he cannot successfully consummate the marriage for whatever reason, and one of them would be if the wife persists in refusing sex.

I think her hesitation showed that she knew once she took that final step that the life she wanted/dreamed of was no longer possible. She wanted to be free just like her mentor. She didn't want to be confined to a marriage where she would lose her identity. She knew once she married into the Xu family that her role as the main wife would take her further away from the life she was fighting for...if it wasn't for her mother's murder she would've successfully ran away from her marriage. She was probably also thinking that she just put herself directly into the lion's den...lol having to deal with his mother/all his concubines.
