The Week That Was - 05.01.25

Our first week of the New Year and we are happy to say we have had 4 adoptions.
Staff have been having some much needed time off so Don and I worked through with the help of Mel, Leanne and Pete to pickup some extra shifts.
The Xmas lights have been pulled down and had to have some repairs done. The wind and sun caused some heartaches but nothing that Don alongside our volunteer Bec couldn’t fix.
We have been making friends with the dogs especially the 3 greyhounds and Rubble. I think the thing that shocked me is that our 3 greys are brothers but have never been allowed to be around each other. The boys love running around doing their zoomies with each other. Nothing softens us girls that seeing friendships form between the residents.
Anyway, here is our week that was.

Dee, my heart goes out to you and your staff. I know there are no words that can fully comfort you in the face of so much cruelty, but I hope you can take some solace in knowing that that poor puppy did not die alone, scared and confused. He was surrounded by your love and compassion. If that was the only gift you could give him, it was one of the most precious. Now, as in your videos, on a happy note, you gave me a much needed chuckle this morning! In the U.S. it is very close to a blasphemy not to love PB&J sandwiches! (peanut butter and jelly). It is practically a staple for young children's lunches and a comfort food for many adults. The most common form is smooth peanut butter spread on a slice of white bread topped with a generous layer of grape jelly and a second slice of bread. Other varieties including using chunky peanut butter and substituting jam or preserves for the jelly. (I use raspberry preserves- yummy!) Don't knock it till you've tried it. I also enjoy learning Australian slang. I've learned a lot from Sam and Luke and now from you and your staff. Take care!

Dear Dee, you are everything but useless! Remember all the lifes you changed, saved and made better together with your team. For the animals, as for the people around as well.There is nothing but repect and love for you all 💗💖 Thank you for caring when no one else does, for defending what should have been done differently, for trying when everyone else gave up, for caring even when there are no options left, so at least they dont have to go alone. You mean everything to every one of them.. I wish any of use could ease the pain, take away some of the hurt and sadness. All we can do is admire you and your team and hopefully remember you what an insane awesome woman/team you are, and all the good you all bring into this world. No one can imagine how hard it really is, and it is a really good thing to share the pain, and make the wrongs and how could they's, something public. No animal deserves any of this.. And no animal loving person should ever have to deal with this.. Them people are wrong, those who abandon are useless, those who lie and throw away precious babys are the nightmare, those who hurt them hopefully one day will be the ones who are judged by their actions. Lots of love, and hopefully a happier and healthy new year is coming. All we can do is hope and fight. I wish you all the strength and love there is, and look forward to all the better outcomes that are about to come, and many many more happy animals and humans enjoying each others company when they finally find each other ❤

Listening to this… Dee what a job! Dumping, strays, parvo , dogs at vets… I take my hat off to you. I just don’t know… how in good lord you do it. It just doesn’t stop. Good days bad days. I’m glad you’ve all had some time out. It’s critical you do that. For your own well being and mental health. Hopefully this week will be amazing for you ❤❤

Thanks about educating us about slang. What do you mean by jelly? In the USA we have jam and jelly. Jam has seeds left in it and jelly doesn't. Either is good with bread and peanut butter. yummy!

In Australia jelly is a dessert wobbly and cold. Jam can have seeds or not doesn't really matter. We eat Peanut butter and Jam on bread/toast.

Sorry Dee, you did more for that puppy than all his owners put together so please don’t blame yourself!! Unfortunately the timing wasn’t right for him, you did your absolute best and you actually saved him from a horrible death from parvovirus, and more importantly, he wasn’t alone!!

I know I couldn't do that job, I can't even go into rescues. It's just there are all the other dogs I can't take home too. While I couldn't, so glad there are people like you all that are doing it, and doing it well. Even when I was a little girl I couldn't stand to see a lost of dumped dog because you can see they feel completely abandoned, anxious, confused, frightened and so very sad. I couldn't just walk away and would end up crying and in trouble and getting mad because I wasn't allowed to take that dog home. I can remember swearing at an inlaw that was going to "get rid" of their puppy because he was nipping at my cousin's clothes. Just gonna say it that kid deserved it. I was 9 at the time. My mother wasn't up to the fight that day so he came home with us....... Even though you couldn't save that poor little dog, you tried your best. You cared for him, you took him to the vet, you stayed and comforted him while he when to sleep. You cried for him and to me that's a massive thing, It meant that his life was meaningful and that someone cared and showed him love, at least once in his life...... Just so you know I cried right along with you Dee. All they very best to all of you and thank you for caring.....

I'm honestly not a bawler normally, but animals suffering I cannot handle. I get caught up in the hopelessness when other people feel it too. I cryed for that little pup and I felt Dee's momentary hopelessness and any one that was there and felt the same.....

I cant do what you guys do. I cant even walk into a pound - tried walking through the kennels at RSPCA once and had to be led out by my flatmates because I literally couldn't see through the tears. My first rescue was my very first dog. I picked him from a photo that the rescue sent me, they even drove him to my home (god bless them). He was the love of my life. He passed a few years ago and not a day goes by that I don't think of him and miss him with all my heart and soul. My current boy came from RSPCA, they let me meet him in a room off the waiting area. There was no way I wasn't adopting him. I cant imagine surrendering or dumping my boy.

They've been transferred to one of our rescue friends where they've been accepted into a pack. They still have a long way to go with trusting humans, but we have some more of their journey to share of when they were in our care

Dee never think you're not enough. You are a wonderful person and care for your charges deeply...both two and four legged. Personally, I wish people were only allowed to have pets once going through a rigorous psychology test. And also ban breeding. There are so many animals who need good homes, it's obscene. Every time I hear an animal is adopted I immediately think to myself, "yes but is it a good home"?
