Great analysis. Michael Kugalman shouldn't be apologetic about his analysis because it's absolutely true. I totally agree and now have understood the core issue/s way better. I used to think that Pakistanis or the area which Pakistan now covers was always almost passive. Hardly great battle ever being fought, you know. Modi may / may not win 4rth term , but these guys do not understand the pillars of India go back to 8000 years of democratic ideals from janpads which were republics city states like athens , can say as someone who is left of centre I liked certain ground-breaking schemes of NDA for poverty eradication others werent as effective some security steps were good so was foreign policy have to step up manufacturing and agri part we are slow as snail in those 2. Even as a believer that we need a far more efficient guy than Modi to propel us to top spot by 2045-55 else we will be forever stuck in 3rd spot, I can agree 100% bangladesh and pakistan should never be a metric for India.
