Listen to the second verse a few times… he’s reflecting on his career as The Weeknd, talking to himself about himself. Just like he manifested his future celebrity with what he sang in “Rolling Stone.” It’s just how his brain works. Just like he told Zane Lowe back in that 2016 Beats 1 Starboy-era interview, that he had enough material completed at that point that he already knew the trajectory of his musical career. Talk about controlling your destiny… If you listen to the lyrics in this song close enough, specifically the second verse, it becomes clearer he’s talking as Abel to his own alter ego, The Weeknd; but as a double entendre, utilizing language he would generally sing as he did as The Weeknd would to a woman-just to himself, instead. He’s literally displaying his evolution as a human, as a man, and an artist. He’s not really talking about a break up, nor a one night stand with a woman here, though it can appear that way on the surface.
