The Weeknd is at a different place in his life, he's not homeless anymore, making "dark, depressing music". He's living good, fucking a model so that explains this more up tempo, pop-ish sound.

I fail to comprehend why so many people, especially fans, are disappointed with this single. Yes, it does have a more pop radio appeal to it, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's selling out. I just think he's trying to expand his fan base and is evolving in terms of style, music and artistic persona, which I have no problem with. Just because an artist is aiming for mainstream radio, does not necessarily mean they are diluting their sound or art form. For example, look at Ed Sheeran. He has become very much mainstream but he has been able to do that while still remaining the same artist as before. He's only grown not regressed and that's the same case with The Weeknd.
@bigbambigtop9 жыл бұрын
Foh why do you call him Abel do you know him personally or something
@Ghostvor9 жыл бұрын
"Expanding your fan base" translates to "Changing your style so you can make more money" which translates to "selling out". Im not saying hes selling out to begin with im just saying you're contradicting yourself or you are trying to sugar coat things. Either way, theres nothing wrong with a fan being disappointed that one of their favorite artists is changing their style. To simplify it, if your favorite fruit is an apple and you have a apple tree in your backyard, wouldnt you be kinda pissed if it grew oranges instead? Comprehendo now?
@Sambaboy92309 жыл бұрын
Huh? Did I say there was anything wrong with being disappointed cause clearly I did not. You have your opinions, I have mine. Simple as that. I'm just saying that I personally don't think this single indicates that he's selling out just because it so happens to be a pop record.Yes, it seems to me that he is expanding his fan base but again, I don't necessarily think that means selling out. Would you say someone like Kendrick Lamar is a sell out because he has gained a larger audience over the years? He's still the same innovative artist who is continuing to grow despite his mainstream success. I think you and I have different understanding of the term "sell out". To me, a sell out is someone who completely loses their roots of music to lure mainstream viewers. To me, that is not what Kendrick Lamar or even The Weeknd are doing. You can still stay true to your roots and become mainstream without dumbing down or diluting your style.
@critizzle9 жыл бұрын

Moby Dick 2nd place belongs to Elton John, by the way. And yes, he's not just a "hired hand", but Max Martin was the main writer. The Weeknd may have contributed a bit of lyric or a line of melody here and there, but the main song structure was composed by Martin. But hey, I like The Weeknd, which is more than I can say about the majority of artists over the last 20 years...
@SpaceCattttt9 жыл бұрын
Moby Dick I don't know where you get your definition from. but to me, a songwriter is a person who writes a song. That is to say, both the music AND the lyric. Or just the music, if it's an instrumental piece. Elton John doesn't write lyrics, and it can be argued that his songs would much less significant without the superb lyrics by Bernie Taupin, so in their case, clearly they are both songwriters (together). However, since a melody without words is still a song, and a lyric without music isn't, it must be said that the most important aspect of any given song is, in fact, the music. So, since Elton provides the music, he's the one I mentioned as being in 2nd place. But Taupin certainly deserves to share that spot with him. And I could give you a link to a site which mentions Elton being 2nd. But it's in Swedish, so I doubt it would do you much good.

Garry Caprani it's not the fact that he's popular, it's that he's completely changed the sound he came up off of. I dont have problem with the song but I understand why people would think he "sold out".
@GarryDCaprani9 жыл бұрын
TheDFRNT that's true man, but artists need to evolve to progress. I'm sure there will be more The Morning type songs on his album, just gotta mix it up a bit.
@MrVidsAllDay9 жыл бұрын
Garry Caprani It really irks me when people say this. Artists DO need to evolve, but artists changing their sound as soon as they go mainstream/get picked up by a label is NOT evolution of their music. It is called **commercialization**. If you want an example of an artist whose music and sound actually evolved, while still remaining commercially successful, look at a band like Radiohead. They have very admirable careers which they successfully advanced on their own terms. I completely understand why artists want to be financially successful and get rich making their music. But sadly, this *almost always* comes with high costs, such as the loss of creative control over their work. Their sound gets changed, their music gets "dumbed down" and infused with pop or dance elements, with the sole goal of achieving radio play and appealing to the broadest audience possible (just look at this song for an example. It was clearly manufactured for the radio and MTV). So when people accuse an artists of 'selling out', they are referring to this process. As a side note, this can be extremely frustrating as a music lover, but what can you do? In order to be financially successful in the entertainment business you need to tap into the world's largest consumer market, which is in the United States. And unfortunately, the general American public seems to have an atrocious taste in entertainment and so unique artists making good music all too often get butchered in order to appeal to these crowds. That is capitalism at it's finest!

Too many people complain about how The Weeknd's music has changed, but they're too close-minded to realize that every artist changes throughout their career. An artist that sings about the same stuff with the same production gets old FAST. Also, he warned us that he would change in "Rolling Stone" so there really is no need to complain. Anyways, this song is amazing. Very 80's, Michael Jackson-esque. It still has a bit of a dark feel, but it's also upbeat enough to dance to. And it's radio-friendly, which means he will reach a wider audience. Can't wait till his new album comes out ❤️

This song has a special place in my heart. I was born and brought up in a Catholic family in Texas and my boyfriend was born and brought up in a strict Hindu family back in India. He moved to the states for college. We met in class and instantly fell for each other. The difference in our races created many obstacles for us. Even our parents stood between us because of the religious differences. But we stuck to it and fought all those battles together and today we are the happiest of couples.I hope we get to live with each other forever. ❤️🇺🇸🇮🇳❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Takes me back to my senior year of high school, this song was a staple EVERY weekend that winter when my friends and I would go ice skating Friday night after school. Such good times. I'd love to just have a surreal dream and think I'm back there for a night. Feels like yesterday but instead 10 whole years is sneaking up and it's right around the corner. Try to enjoy every phase of your life, because even when you think it's all gone to Hell, something as simple as a song can take you back to that exact moment, sometimes to the only bad feeling, but I've found more often than not, I find the silver lining when looking back and miss something about it.

I hope I’m not different...and I hope you’ll still listen'' Abel Tesfaye (Rolling Stone, 2011) Have been listenin this guy since House of Balloons...so? His music has changed? Of course, wtf u expected, you're not the same person now than 4 years ago...neither him! Just fuckin dance and stop hatin!

for everyone sayin this song is too mainstream.. yeah, the song is very upbeat and poppy but that doesn't mean it was made specifically for the radio. if you get behind the lyrics and its metaphors, you will realise he's still talkin about the same things he always talks about. you don't find these typa topics on the radio all that often.. this, to me, is pop done right. not trynna be a dickrider cause i didn't like kiss land all that much as much as i like the weeknd but this to me is a pretty good track that keeps me excited for his album. don't throw this shit instantly out of the window just because he went in a new direction. it might work in the vibe of the album too, we don't know..
