While id say, in terms of style, you are correct. But in terms of raw talent and show man ship. He doesnt even compare. Esp in terms of song writing ability. Micheal jackson, had some of the greatest song writers working for him. Eddie van halencreated the guitar riff from beat it. The reason synthwave, hasnt hit the height of musical respect as the 80s, is because much of the music, is written electronically from the beginning. While 80s music, was written on acoustic guitar and piano. Then synths were created around the music. Thats why a micheal jackson song, sounds like a full on band, and not just a synth drum machine and some vocals. If The weekend wanted to actually live up to that statement, that he is this generation micheal jackson, he needs to step up his song writing ability. Hire the greatest band on the planet, and write music with universal themes. Micheal jackson wrote songs about crime, monsters, acceptance, unity, and love. While you can barely decipher what the weekend is writing about. He would of had a bigger chance had daft punk not retired. The biggest problem with synth, is bands no longer understand how to incoperate alternative hair metal, with the synth wave. So they make music thats either one or the other. They are either synthwave or rock. Go back and actually lISTEN to thriller the album. Go back and listen to sunglasses at night, listen to rebel yell. These are 80s hair metal songs, with synths added to over shadow the rest of the music. Thats how 80s music was made. bands today, havent quite mastered it, because its kind of a lost art tbh. Eddie van halen wrote 80s metal, but he was SO talented, that anything he wrote on the guitar, he could write it and play it on the piano. This is not something many artists do today. So pretty much, if the weekend wanted to be the next micheal jackson forreal, he would be getting guys like adam jones from tool, or the guys from dragon force, to collab an album with him. Have the write 80 hair metal songs, then hire the best synth keyboardist in the synthwave scene. Then fuse it all together. They would make probably the greatest 80s music album, since thriller.
