I engineer and was lucky enough to be in the same studio but different tracking room as Abel while he was in a session. His process for new songs (as well as a lot of artists who can afford copious amounts of studio time) are usually like this. Humming/vibing/flowing to a beat they like then going back in and fine tuning it. The session I was in a beat was played for him that he liked and he immediately started humming/harmonizing under his breath to the beat and every now and then throw out some bars and write certain notes or lyrics down. He never even formally recorded on the beat that I know of though. If he really likes something he’ll sit in the control room and record and vibe to it, fine tune it a bit and then go in the booth. I’ve seen a lot of other high end artists do this too. When the creativity or idea hits you gotta capture it. You gotta catch that lightning in the bottle. I had a vet engineer tell me once “People think perfect practice makes perfect. When in reality just practice makes perfect. No one keeps stats on you during practice; just on game day. The reps are what matters.” Basically: Just work. The more you have available to you the more likely something is to hit. If I record 5 bad songs but take the best part of those 5 and make it one thats one hit that could get you on. Master your craft 🤙🏼

Glad to know the weeknd mumbles up references or just sings random words to find the pockets he needs to hit. The best way to find a melody. And to the people saying this shoulda been on the afterhours album the song was never finished and tossed to the abyss. Maybe on a future(not the rapper) album this will be a lil interlude at the end of a song. I dont even think the beat was finished let alone the lyrics.

Problably he didn't drop this song because it's a narrative about the darkest part of his relashionship with Bella, where he can't stop loving her and also can't understand her feelings about their thing, showed as he describes her indecison behavior. The chorus indicates that he misses her despite her chose and their confused issues.

This is perfect for a scene in a psychological crime movie where the protagonist, who is a detective, is having a bad day and smoking cigarettes for the whole day after failing to save someone and is questioning themself. The time setting would be around dawn and there are no sounds, just this music playing throughout the entire scene.

Had To Write This I dont have a place Dont know where I am to be Out on the road to say less And I dont know where I'ma go to No. . . No. . . Dont got a home or a bed Stress out the hair on my head So I'ma give into this high Watch me go on away Out in my zone No . . . No . . . I use you without a care Only you can take me there And we aint gotta be nowhere Nowhere else is where I wanna be Gotdamn love it when you're so empty Love from you doesn't mean a thing So habitual, I love way too many things My ritual, know what that kind of love brings And there aint no strings You've got no ties to me Dont you tell lies to me And I know that you know I dont have a place Dont know where I am to be Out on the road to say less And I dont know where I'ma go to No. . . No. . . Dont got a home or a bed Stress out the hair on my head So I'ma give into this high Watch me go on away Out in my zone No . . . No . . . No, I've been here so so alone No, no, we've been together all alone Ouu no, I can't leave you alone I'm at my highest, that's when I'm in my zone Do care what no one else say, fuck it man I'm grown Numbed me so much and I'm only 26 You've done this with others, but I'm a pro at this No need for practice I can turn a dark room into a club Picture pitchers full of purple Pay attention to your circle before they hurt you Pay me no mind while I lose mine over you In my zone I remember all the houses I've outgrew, so now I dont have a place Dont know where I am to be Out on the road to say less And I dont know where I'ma go to No . . . No Might just get higher again Don't tell a girl or a friend I'll just keep it all inside No one else is invited Into my zone She'll get me higher again Till I can no longer stand I wanna feel the sky under my toes Stand on the edge of today All in my zone -24/7
