One of the things that hooked me about After Hours is just how unpredictable Abel's vocal patterns are. I always kind of expect him to do one thing and he does something entirely different and infinitely better. His voice is amazing but he has a much deeper understanding of how to maximize and just do the most with it.

To me this song, and more so the video represents lust and the party life, he meets this girl who’s appealing and draws him in by offering herself to him, saying she does that all the time, and once he gets that rush of lust (the oxygen/gas mask) that’s when he starts feeling the intense feeling of joy even when he knows he shouldn’t be there, and the girl keeps offering him the gas mask, and puts it up to his face constantly, drawing him deeper and deeper into that state of euphoria, it’s like a dilemma he is in, where he wants to escape it and knows he shouldn’t be participating in that life, but the setting is just right and people are just offering him these things and so he takes it, until it leads him to being done wrong by the chick, she finally ties the knot around his neck and tries to officially trap him, that’s when he realizes he needs to back off but at that point, he’s in too deep and she drags him back to that life, then it finally ends with him being passed out on the floor in the middle of the club alone, she’s no where to be found. It’s like a representation of lust and the party life never really going anywhere outside of that moment, and sometimes it can lead to you fucking urself up.

These vocals give me Kissland vibes. I swear this is Kissland on Synth Pop. This, to me, is what Abel imagined Kissland should sound like. Also the whole song, I interpreted as Abel talking about a submissive woman who will indulge in drug abuse to be with Abel. I was so reminded of late seventies groove Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder who was a genius!!!!…. and the visuals reminded me of the Scarface movie scene where they open a door into a sunset 🌅 wall mural , where Moroder was the main composer . There is a freedom of those times where everything was real not so “ fake positivity “… even some Marvin Gaye in there ! Abel even allows himself the freedom of mocking a cheesy phrase like take my breath away by being daringly literal. LIVING FOR THIS !

First of all, thanks for the review, in a calming manner. This piece of The Weeknd’s art is challenging to interpret, I find. That’s what I like about his work.
