Thanks for shouting out your one piece discussion on the last DDF episode with Jared. I would suggest shouting out Book content on your manga videos to get the apparent "wider audience" interested in your main content aswell. Been a lurker on your channel for a long while and found your content through Merphy back when you started Vinland. Am currently watching the Vagabond videos as i *slowly* get through the 3in1 bindups, and your videos made my take the leap to start it. Finding Book tube got me back into reading novels, so thank you all for that

Thank you for the update! I am very excited for the cover art of the new "The Way of Edan" edition. By the way: I nominated the 2nd and 3rd Edan trilogy books for the Ursula K. le Guin prize for fiction 2024. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it won't be to their disadvantage that they are continuations of a trilogy. The first book fell slightly out of the eligible time frame unfortunatelay. So, I hope that the judges won't fault book 2 and 3 for that and see the brilliance of the story as a whole - the longlist should be announced some time between now and October I think? I am not quite sure, but I am keeping an eye on it. ;)

When you say you love editing, I totally get it. Part of writing, even very stream of consciousness writing, involves at least some unconscious if not conscious application of one's Editor's Eye on one's work. I find that the part of myself which edits is one of the most writerly parts of me! Always a delight to indulge that part of my brain and switch into a more editing heavy mode (which has that writer's creative spark in it just as much as writing has that Editor's Eye).

I love the way you put it! Just the fact that you use the phrase "Editor's Eye" tells me you completely understand the feeling. It's a wonderful flow state that combines immersion in the story with an out-of-story perspective. All the best!

I just read Dead Beat about a month and a half ago and didn't quite like it as much as liked the last few Dresden, but I think you will find it a nice tonal shift after Bakker because it's a much lighter read. I can't wait to hear yours and Johanna thoughts on The White-Luck Warrior. The final three books are my favorite out of the seven books.

If I may reccomend a person for a One Piece discussion, i think you would enjoy talking to Aleczandxr. He is streaming his reactions to the manga on twitch (he recently caught up), and has rewievs for every arc on his youtube chanell. I think he is a very very comprehensive reader, and I learned almost all of the stuff you talked about in your videos with A Critical Dragon. He is also just a very nice guy. Although, he isn't exactly an exclusive One Piece fan, so keep that in mind.

That's actually an easy one to answer. Don't get me wrong: I love Vagabond and Vinland Saga especially, and the other three manga I've read have their virtues too. But One Piece is something special that transcends genre, time, and place. It is easily my favorite manga so far. Cheers, Mehul!

Thank you! Those hardcovers of WOLAS are, unfortunately, nearly impossible to get now, I think, but perhaps there will be a reprinting as more people get into the series. I got mine a couple years ago. It's crazy that Janny Wurts is such a talented writer and such a talented artist, but I know she has worked extremely hard at both.

WLW gets a bit odd at times. But love anytime a Nonman shows up for some juicy lore. You really want to have hope but there is always this sense of impending doom that will not end well. But you do have a son who loves his mother. One of the creepiest characters I have ever read.

I know you're not doing youtube for the views, but considering you are a professor I wonder if you might consider implementing an upload schedule? This gives people who watch your videos the opportunity to say, "oh hey it's Thursday morning, I can pull up a video from Philip Chase." as opposed to the guess and check method

@@PurpleHaki That’s a great suggestion, Daniel! I’ve never been great at keeping to a schedule because I have times when I’m busier than usual (like the end of a semester) and just can’t do as much. My dream is to retire in a few years and dedicate myself to writing and KZbin, and then I could probably pull it off. Right now, though, I tend to release videos on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 8:00 AM Eastern Time, though I’ll have weeks when I get out only two videos. Cheers!

You can start watching/reading bungou stray dogs it's characters are inspired and named after famous literary authors like fyodor dostoevsky, edger allan Poe, dazi osamu, etc. And it also have 8 light novels (I just really love the sires and I just think it would interest a person like you)

Should give you a trigger warning for mention of suicide multiple times becuse the author dazi osamu had committed several attempts before actually committing it and so the character also has those quirks (my English is bad)

How do you refering/paying tribute to other things into your work? A little nod here and there that make the reader "woah so cool" rather than "oh my God! So cringe"?

I enjoy reading nods (for example, I just watched the Ghibli Studio movie Castle in the Sky and realized Oda must have been nodding to it a couple times during the Skypiea Saga of One Piece). I also love including nods in my own writing. Hopefully they are more cool than cringe. They key thing is to give the nod your own stamp. A complete copy is no good, meaning a twist of some sort is much preferable, and the nod should serve some purpose in the story. That's my take!

Not a huge fan of Petrik's art direction tbh, I i think a lot of the covers hes been involved in come across as amateurish. Recent Jade legacy books look particularly garish with that middle graphic. However it would be much worse if the artists weren't that good. I wish you good luck with yours !

Some art styles are going to work well for some people and not work well for others. Personally, I love the art I've been seeing for The Broken Binding editions of The Malazan Book of the Fallen and can't wait to get my hands on them.
