It sounds like maybe you interpret the song as being a situation where the singer HAS the “you” in her life; but, I’m pretty sure she doesn’t. In other words, it’s a song about missing someone (possibly post-breakup) - not about appreciating someone who IS in your life. I might be wrong about 2., but I really don’t think so. I’d be open to hearing a dissenting opinion, though!

It's amazing how listening to some songs takes you back to what you felt when your first heard them. I remember hearing this for the first time when the boy I thought I loved told me he saw me just as just a friend. It was October, I was very sad and I painted a lot of trees.
