I cannot believe you forgot the coolest part of the kelpie myth, in that you can tell if a horse is a kelpie by looking at its hooves. Kelpies have backwards facing hooves, so even IF the horse looks like its facing away from water, it can immediately start galloping towards it anyways :D And that the mating of a kelpie and a regular horse results in offspring that is impossible to drown! Kelpie should be AT LEAST an A tier in my opinion.

Around where I live, there are two "cryptids". One is of a catfish in our local lake who made it's home in an old car dumped in the water, and has gotten so big it can't escape, and lives by opening its mouth and waiting for things to come in. Another one isn't a living thing, but a ghost train. My town had a huge train fire, which permanently destroyed the line and resulted in the town's prosperity declining since the 50s. You can still hear train horns sometimes--this is due to the sound carrying from a nesrby town's track, depending on the wind. But it's still a strange vibe to suddenly hear a quiet train horn in a place with no train.

The picture at 37:42 is actually a painting of a creature from old Norwegian folklore called "Nøkken". Its appearance is like a pile of twigs in the surface of a pond, but it can shapeshift to either a horse or beautiful woman/man. It lures people to the edge and drags them under. It can also take people swimming in the water. The myth came from people swimming among waterlilies and tangling their feet in their long stems. The waterlilie's plant family is actually named after the myth. (Nøkkerosefamilien = Nøkken-rose-family) The artist that made the painting of the horse also made a painting of the "real" thing. (copy-paste the name from the top to see it)

Dogheaded people are such a cool aspect of history to study. They were prevalent in many places and many churches sought to try and teach them their faith. It’s fascinating because as society developed and people’s ability to travel further distances grew the dogheaded people always seemed to be just past where it was safe for a human to travel.

Wendi I just wanna say that I have spent the last 17 hours at work out in the oilfield. It has been the hottest day of the year in my area this far and I was doing the job of three people today. I found the devil bird to be very interesting, I live in Yucatan, Mexico and I heard a very similar tale, it too was of a night bird that would sit atop someone's home and screech or cry loudly a few times to announce that a person in that household would pass soon. I searched around for a bit and it is called a Xooch' in Mayan, a barn owl in english. In the Maya Yucatec spirituality they are seen as messengers of Mitnal and it is believed that their screech is announcing death, they are seen as a manifestation of Yuum Cimil as well.

@wingerding No, its Soggoth. "So" is Soggoth's conjoined twin. He hates the goth style but has to put up with it every day. Yog (their father) told So that Soggoth was born goth, but So was having none of it. So So was so mad that So called his uncle Cthulu and nobody ever heard from Yog again. It's important to get their names right. Their family dynamic formed the backbone of the Tudor Dynasty, but nobody talks about it anymore. Which is sad because if Yog hadnt been so goth that he told So that Soggoth was born goth, H.P. Lovecraft never would've discovered America.

In Polish and Lithuanian folklore, there is the story of the Aitwar (I- eet- var). It's a chicken headed orange dragon that has claws which spark when it hits them together. It is nocturnal and from a distance looks like a shooting star due to its giant firery wings and the sparks flying behind it. The Aitwar was fully nocturnal and when the sun rose, it would fly down peasant's chimney's and rest wherever it could find space, most often in barns or large living rooms. It would often steal odd belongings(clothes, farm tools, and surprisingly, clover flowers) from neighbours and bring it back to his unwilling hosts. It is seen as a trickster spirit who often got people into trouble unwillingly in the way that a cat brings you dead mice or knocks over a glass.

I wonder what he'd think of the Alaskan Tizheruk. While another giant sea snake, it's got some interesting attributes. Not only is it completely invisible, but it can condense itself down to be able to travel in extremely shallow water. The idea of being far inland and still fearing that an unseen sea creature could be in the river next to you and grab you with its long, whip-like tongue is pretty creepy.

Wendigoon should hear about the washerwoman (also known as the Bean-Nighe) from Scottland myths, it's about this grotesque elderly washerwoman that sits on riverbanks cleaning bloodied clothes of those who will die, constantly wailing in agony. There was a story I heard where a little girl saw one and when she tried to run away, the washerwoman whipped her by the legs with the cloth and the girl became paralyzed till her mother (or father) found her. She died the next day in her bed.

As a fan of yours from South Africa, it's so cool seeing you talk about the Grootslang! I absolutely agree with you that it's not used enough, but that's mostly due to the fact it's localised to only a small area of the country and doesn't have many stories surrounding it. The messiness of it might come from the fact that it's a story passed through a few different languages and groups of people, so they all have slightly different views on it from what I know. I did actually start work on a project based on it a while ago, might have to return to that now that I think about it. Also, I really respect you as a creator but as an Afrikaans speaker hearing you try to pronounce its name made me chuckle. Anyways, really glad to see you cover it and bring more eyes onto the legend! Have a lovely rest of your day!

the congo snake makes way more sense than the "megaconda" because the congo's longest snake is like 4 feet long and is the only large rainforest environment to not have a large constrictor snake. the megaconda is also dumb because in the Amazon the largest animal is the manatee which is only 800 pounds while the largest animal in the congo is the eastern bush elephant at 6 tons. because of the evidence i presented I request that the megaconda is moved to c or d teir

@@cale1523 in the amazon jaguars, sharks, and crocodiles all prey on manitees. and there is no super sharks or super jaguars in the amazon. the largest of manitees grow to about 1200 pounds (0.6 tons) and are about 9.8 feet in length, about 4 feet in width. all of that is on the higher end. why on gods green earth would it need to be have a 60 foot diameter to hunt something that is 4 feet wide. the only tree trunk i know that gets that thicc is fucking redwoods. my house is 60 feet wide. 60 would be a lot for the congo elephants which get to be about 7 feet wide, 10 feet tall, 24 feet long, and 6.5 tons.

Like even as I approached him and he was picking out vegetables he was literally speaking at full volume to himself about cryptids. And I was like “Hey are you Wendigoon? I’m a huge fan of your content” and he literally turned and faced me and looked me dead in my soul and just kept talking about Cryptids. He never stopped. In Brazil we also have 3 other folklore creatures that would be cool additions to the Iceberg. Saci Pererê: A one legged man or teen that only wears a red hood and a red short and he stalks the forests of Brazil punishing those whose inflict damages to it or playing harmless pranks in those that take good care of it In a more deadly twist, a similar idea is the Mula Sem Cabeça, a horse like creature with reversed hooves that is headless, in its place is a constant flame, aways ablaze, and when you destroy the forests you gain its attention and it will put part of the forest on fire, but only to chase you, the fire wont spread uncontrollably and will lead you straight to it, where it will burn you alive. The last creature is the Boto Cor-de-Rosa. Botos are species of Dolphins that can inhabit in Freshwater, they are common to the Amazon region, the special think about the Cor-de-Rosa, or pink, is that during full moon nights, it can rise out of the water and it becomes an incredibly handsome man. And during the full moon it goes around impregnating as many maidens as possible

37:27 Glad to see the kelpie there, kinda wish it was higher up! In Scotland we have a few horse like monsters. Each-Uisge is much like the kelpie but far more deadly, devouring its prey but leaving the liver behind. Tendency to take the form of a human man who goes after women, victims have to see if there are water weeds in his hair and if so escape the Each-Uisge before they are dragged underwater. There is Nuckelavee another horse like being, rather graphic to describe as it has one eye, skinless and a rider growing from its back. Connections to the devil and a plague bringer, it’s a real monster!

idea for fictional universe I will never use feel free to run with this: think of a futuristic technologically "advanced" society. But instead of cryptids not being able to function without the nature previously around them, they simply evolve because the explanation for many of them is just "it's magic bro". Like Kelpies take on the form of a motorcycle or something. Guy sees a really cool bike and it seems a bit off but it's so pretty he steals it and it just runs directly off a cliff. I'm not a good writer but I think it would be cool to think out the implications of something that creates a fear of nature having to evolve past nature itself because people slowly but surely destroy their habitats.

There's a scandinavian and finnish myth similar to kelpie, although I believe it came from nixie and not kelpie (?). I think it's called näcken in scandinavian countries, but in Finland it's called näkki. It's usually male in other countries and plays the violin and can teach it to people who make a deal with it, but in Finland näkki is female. She's been used to scare children away from waters and teach them to be careful about them. There's a saying in Finland before you go swimming: "näkki maalle, minä veteen" which basically translates to "näkki, rise up from the water so I can enter" and vice versa when you're getting out of the water. It's a fun little thing and kelpie reminds me of it, since näkki can also appear in the form of an animal, like a horse, or even a large rock in the water! It's said that if a swimmer climbs on a rock that's actually a näkki in disguise, it'll try and drown you if you don't say it's name or a phrase that refers to it. (there's also apparently one where you call it a son of a bitch and throw it with something made of iron lmao) I really enjoy these cryptid videos, keep it up!

28:35 That scary background sound really added atmosphere to that description. As if something large was approaching to grab us. 36:55 We know birds can get as big as the Dracula pterosaur, basically a flying Giraffe.

In Utah growing up my grandpa would tell stories of "Wompus Cats". Like the side hill Gouger it was a wild cat that had uneven legs. It could move quickly clockwise, or counter clockwise around hills, and mountains. So if you ever saw one you should run up, or down the hill to get away as it could only move slowly up, or down. Was way fun to learn about Side hill Gougers. Since it reminded me of my childish fear of the wompus cats.

Fun fact: when the iceberg boy talks about the Kelpie, that painting of a white horse is about a different water horse, namely Nøkken. It is quite similar on the surface, but that is because water horses are like its own category of deadly nymphs. The kelpie is the least dangerous of the group.
