The Weirdest Obstacles in Every Mario Game

Hey guys welcome to a really goofy video where I go over the weirdest obstacles that you can find from throughout the Super Mario Bros series! Some of these are pretty deep cuts and I really think you'll enjoy the video, or atleast find what I have to say entertaining. If they ever do another edition of the Super Mario Encyclopedia, they need to recruit Copycat to do a bunch of lists for the Appendix. Easiest/Hardest, Best/Worst, Strangest, etc. Basically, his videos but condensed down into list form. I could imagine getting stuck into that alone for days lol.

Thank you! I swear I remember when I was younger there were those lift blocks in Super Mario Land (specifically 1-3) and I'd run around on the score and coin displays. I recently played through it again and couldn't find the lift block so I thought it was some sort of dream. You have no idea how validated I feel now.

one thing about the grump lumps is that whenever you ground pound it itll get mad & move faster for a brief moment

Great video. One quick fact about the grumblump you missed though is that if you ground pound it, it speeds up and it's face goes from neutral to mad.

I feel like you should have mentioned the yellow Juice Generators in Sunshine. It's so bizarre having these yellow blobs that undulate-but only if you get near it as if it's alive, and can only be removed with Yoshi's vomit, causing it to dissolve while shaking; again, as if it's alive. Also only used 6 times. Twice in Delfino Plaza, and once in Ricco Harbor, Gelato Beach, Pinna Park, and Pianta Village.

I hate to be that person, but the “water bubbles” 15:03 actually originated from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, in World 7.

I would say that one of the weirdest obstacles(?) in 3D World is the Cat Ramps (idk if these are the official name). Basically, they just sit in front of a wall so that cat mario can run/climb up these ramps without jumping. To me, they just feel kind of odd, but maybe they were just used to get the point of the cat powerup across.

What about the walking candle flames that kinda behave like Boos? (They’re in a SMB3 castle or fortress) Also in the Same Game, similarly only in one level, there’s these beetles that have arms who can throw these white blocks that you otherwise can pick up yourself. It’s just weird that this very animalistic breed of Koopa, the beetle, has another subspecies that seems more advanced than any other regular Koopa besides the Hammer Bro variations and maybe the Sumo Bros

Wrong out of the gate. The weirdest obstacle in the original Super Mario Bros was the endless halls in some of the castles. These halls would loop endlessly unless you went down them in a specific order. Much weirder than scale platforms.

It's Super Mario Land 2 DX. It's like Link's Awakening DX, but never officially released. Rather, it's basically a ROM hack.

I'm curious to know what you classify as an obstacle? Most of these I found not as obstacles but tools for you to go forward. I'd classify an obstacle as something you have to work around to pass, not work with. Also something that can full stop your progress like a locked door or a lifted bridge. Most of the things you showcased don't do either of those

Yeah, that actually really bugged me too, because a good majority of these aren’t obstacles at all. To me, and I’d imagine most people, the definition of an obstacle is an object that is in your way, preventing going any further. A lot of things on this list are the opposite of that definition, and actually help Mario to go further. I guess there aren’t enough notable actual obstacles to warrant a full list of them, but I really wish Copycat could’ve thought of a better word that encompasses pieces of the stage design that can either help or hinder Mario from progressing forward in the stage.
