Seed starting is my absolute favourite part of gardening. I'm obsessed with watching the seedlings come up.
@thecottagepeachАй бұрын
That is the most exciting part for sure!
@chongli297Ай бұрын
You made a great point about soil-blockers! What we need is a larger one that uses a long lever-handle to provide a lot more leverage. Then you could use it standing up with both hands and require a lot less force applied
@thecottagepeachАй бұрын
Johnnys has one like that but it’s for industrial ag use I think, I haven’t gone and seen if it’s available to everyone or affordable
@chongli297Ай бұрын
@@thecottagepeach Yeah, one of the issues with these kinds of products is that they're fairly specialized so they end up costing a lot more than they should be (based on how much they cost to make), simply due to the low volume of sales

It is funny how this space does seem to be dominated by women. An older neighbor lady implied that it was strange to her that I was gardening (This year’s has been a big production and stood out). Even as a man, I can relate to the need for easy to use tools. While I am plenty strong, I was not able to do a number of things I wanted in the garden as early as I wanted this year due to a bicep injury. I had to wait until July 4th for it to heal enough for me to risk aggravating it more before setting up my first Greenstalk. It was awesome and manageable at that point, so I bought another. Fast forward to today and my tomatoes and some hot peppers likely will not ripen enough before the cold and wet weather really sets in. Keep up the great work 👊🏻🌻👊🏻
@thecottagepeachАй бұрын
It’s nice to see that more and more people of all genders are getting into it though! Gardening really is for everybody 😊 Sorry to hear about your injury but sounds like you were able to make the most of the season regardless. It’s always tough seeing those last few blooms coming on knowing they won’t make it before the frost sets in.
@PorchGardeningWithPassionАй бұрын
I totally agree! Coming from other hobbies like RC Flight, Golf, Lifting Weights, etc, it has been an amazing change of pace. The best part is eating plants and berries that are as fresh as possible 😃🍓😃

I find that beets pair well with feta cheese. So I make this salad…(might sound weird) It starts out as a kale salad. My favorite is dazzling blue. Wrap each beet in foil and bake at 350 degrees until a fork or knife can easily penetrate through the middle. After they cool you can easily slide the skin off. After cleaning and cutting the kale I put it into a gallon size baggie with half an avocado, fresh lemon juice and a little salt. Massage the ingredients through the bag. I don’t like to get my hands dirty - hence the bag😂. Dump that into a bowl with some crumbled feta, rough chopped almonds, and diced roasted beets. The avocado and lemon make the dressing.

This actually sounds right up my alley! Thank you 😊

I have yet to be successful with seed starting. It appears that I'm really good at stunting seedlings. 😢 I've tried bottom watering and the plants didn't seem to absorb the water. I'll try again after watching this. I also appreciate your focus on accessibility as a gardener with a movement disorder. Thank you and bless you!😊

It can be tricky! Try some different seed companies too. Sometimes even a good company will have a bad year for seed quality. I’m glad the accessibility focus is helpful. Thank you for watching ☺️🌼🌱

I'm growing a few Romanesco and other broccoli heads now. I planed them about two weeks and one week ago in 2 gallon grow bags in order to give my tomatoes time to wind down and be removed. I also have a few heads of cabbage in grow bags sprouted and waiting for those beds to open up

I live south of Sylacauga, AL out in the country. Cool weather comes too late for planting a lot of crops, and frost too soon. Last year, we had a hard freeze, 24F, on November 2nd. Favorable temperatures for planting don't come until October. Use of shade cloth, forcasted tempratures, and rain, I got my garden started early this year, sowing seeds on September 5th. Peas, shelling or snow peas, are out of the question until late February. Okay, what do I have growing in my fall garden this year? Parsnips, Danvers Carrots, Detroit Dark Red Beets, Purple Top Turnips, Pak Choi, broccoli, cauliflower, red cabbage, Dutch Cabbage, Rainbow Swiss Chard, Komatsuna, Tatsoi, Yellow Heart Winter Choy, and Nappa Cabage. That is enough to keep me busy until January when I start seed starts for planting Feb 20th through April 10th.

I don't like beets in most applications either, but I'll eat a pint of pickled beets every day if someone doesn't watch me (or until I run out). Not sweet ones, though! To me a sharp, tangy pickled taste cuts the "dirt" flavor a lot more effectively.

Seed starting is my least favorite too. I love watching and caring for them; I just dislike the tedious nature of labeling things - I'm awful about that! I like this color coding idea though, a lot.
@thecottagepeachАй бұрын
It can be very tedious! You can write directly on the cells and wipe it off with an alcohol swab which makes labeling slightly easier imo

Awesome video. I have some winstrips that look like what bootstrap have based their strip tray designs on ❤️ Would love to get some of those 6 cell trays though especially in clear, zi like to be able to see the root development. I might have a while to wait though since shipping to Australia (I checked) will be over $300 😭 It was more a want than a need though lol I have more than enough trays than what I need atm until I build my greenhouse anyway I’m just coming into spring but it’s always nice to v plan ahead and see what others are planting for their cooler months. I love beetroot, but absolutely understand your sentiment of them tasting like dirt 😂 they are a very earthy flavour, especially when home grown!! Try them roasted that tends to bring out the sugars, or even try picking them in a sweeter brine to bring out that bit of natural sweetness in them. I love a bettroot salad, with some greens (baby spinach, rocket/arugula etc) roasted beetroot, feta and some type of balsamic dressing and nuts like walnuts. Super simple and really tasty
@thecottagepeachАй бұрын
Thank you! That’s crazy the shipping is so high 😩 I think a roasted beet salad could be just the thing to convince me, I need to mix it with some other things I know I enjoy so it’s not just straight up beets and nothing else!

Much Like Peach, I can tell someone how to garden but, when it comes to application in growing in my own garden the worry is there. Gardens change every year and the results vary no matter WHO You are! I grew a Mass of squash and pumpkins last year. This year minimal to none. Weather was awful this year between excessive heat and drought. Bootstrap is the Ferrari of seed starting kits. How awesome is your color coded succession planting tip! Broccoli is Broccoli... its gonna tastes like broccoli and I accept this regardless of the name. I know they do this to un-confuse new gardners making choice simple... "You're growing Broccoli ! This is all you need to know plus cool weather!"
