The Wheel of Time: Recap of WoTCon 2024!

Hello to all The Wheel of Time fans! Here is our recap of our weekend at WoTCon 2024! Thank you to all the fans we met! You are the kindest and most welcoming fandom!

That's something I've said often about our fandom(though I'm pretty sure I didn't talk to ya'll at WotCon): it has very successfully self-selected out the a**holes. They tend to leave to find their own pits to seethe in. What's left are the people who recognize and appreciate the many different cultures, mindsets, and viewpoints within the series, and likewise in the fandom itself. If you hadn't figured out, new fans are precious to us. The books are so complex and multilayered that we get something new from each read, but it's never the same as the first time we read them. The big draw of reaction channels is like watching a movie with a friend: "Oh, the good part's coming up..." It's a bit of that, "reading" vicariously through them, but also each person's first read is so different, as they pick up on different character traits, actions, emotions. And now, with the show, it's more of the same: not just the visual medium itself, but a retelling to fit that medium, and a new day as well. ... ... and then we get new show watchers, who have no book information, no preconceptions... a whole new slate of people experiencing this story from, not just the new point of view of the showrunner, but their own personal experience. Yeah, the Wheel of Time is certainly something special. It's inspired a lot of love from its readers. That's also why we're so happy to share it with others. It was lovely to meet you both.

It was really great to meet you both and talk to you for a bit. The Show track is where I ended up spending the majority of my time and it was not very spoilery if at all, I think you would have enjoyed and appreciated those panels also. Fires of Heaven and season two were the spoiler warnings. I think people would have kept you safe in those panels and they were so much fun.

Next year you have to do JordanCon!!!! It's in April in Atlanta. A lot of the same folks from WoT Con attend.

It's easy for me to remember because I've read the books waaaaay too many times. At least the first like 8-9 books. I started reading the series when there were only like 4 out and read all of them multiple times within the first year or two and then reread the whole thing whenever a new book came out. Glad you had a great time at WoTcon. Some day I'll go to that or JordanCon so I can meet everyone.

Yay! I'm glad you ladies enjoyed WoTCon. You definitely seem to fit in amongst the family Fandom. FYI, season three has finished filming, and it's in post-production. It will likely be another year before it drops on prime. Not that I know anything, so take it with a grain of salt. PS. Meeting the two of you is on my highlight reel of the Con. ❤

Both of my daughters have read the books. One of them loves the show like I do, and the other one does not. I think people should interact with the material in whatever way gives them joy. If that means only watching the show or listening to the audiobooks, they are still just as much a part of the fandom as anyone else.

The Liandrin being your favourite character really doesn't make a lot of sense from the book standpoint, but in the show Kate Fleetwood just ate and left no crumbs, so that totally makes sense, she's made Liandrin one of my favourite characters from the show for sure. An idea for a future video: End-of-Series Power Level Ranking Predictions (the name could be better, ahaha). It could be fun for you to try to guess who of our main characters will be the strongest, second strongest and so on by the end of the show. It would be fun to see all kinds of character ratings, like maybe: Top 5 most intelligent characters, top 5 characters who could be darkfriends or black ajah members, top 5 sneakiest characters, things like that!

Maybe consider reading the books together and doing discussion. Fans like to relive the 1st time reading through new book readers. Some 1st time readers do video break-down by each chapter, some do a few chapters at a time, and some do video at the end of each book. Generally, books don't grow channels as big as video/TV channels, but it may be really fun for you. Reading 15 big books is a lot though. There are several YT channels and podcasts that do this, so maybe search a couple of them and check out early Eye of the World vids to see if it sounds fun.

I think by "self-selecting" we mean that we have a zero-tolerance policy for people who aren't kind and respectful. Everyone is welcome, but people who don't pass the vibe check find their way out because we just don't engage with folks who want to be mean and toxic. I'm so glad you all had fun, and I can't wait to see you next year!

I think you should lead a panel rather than get a book-reader to lead it. A book-reader will still influence your perceptions, so not direct spoil you but still an influence.

Buffy would definitely be Green Ajah - the Scooby Gang are her warders, though Willow would probably be Brown Ajah. (Giles is 100% a warder for a Brown Ajah.) Ami Mizuno from Sailor Moon is definitely Brown Ajah. (Usagi is Yellow Ajah, Minako and Makoto are Green Ajah, Mars is probably Green because other Ajahs don't set people on fire.)The female lead in The Mummy is a Brown Ajah type. The old lady from Stargate whose Dad found the Stargate is a definite Brown Ajah type. Rey from the Star Wars sequels would be a Blue.
