Love this series of rewatch videos! You are correct that Thom's song is intended to reference the Dragon and his going mad and breaking the world, but it also think it's thematic for Thom and Mat... Thom with his sorrows and Mat with his eventual "remembering" in S2

I like what the show did with the relationship between Land and Nynaeve. In the book, it was a HUGE shock when Land professed his love for her. The show clearly show chemistry between them.

I love how much you're picking up on the rewatch. I've been wondering how a rewatch would hit for viewers that haven't read the books since even though I still pick up little things on a rewatch, I already had the knowledge of the books going into it, so it's great to see how much more you all know and pick up having seen the rest of the season and season 2. It reinforces to me how well they're putting in all the foreshadowing that new viewers might not realize on the first watch that makes a rewatch at least as fun as the first time! That's why the book series is one of my favorites - it's so much fun every time I read/listen through it because I notice new things, and each scene hits differently after you know the whole story. Robert Jordan is a master at writing in such a way that re-reading is still fresh! Merry Christmas!! Looking forward to the rest of your re-watch reactions and your S3 reactions!!

I’m vacationing in Cancun I glad to see the video up on this rainy day. 😂 I’m sure everyone has said this before, but it’s so fun to see you both make new connections to the story. FYI - stilling is cutting off the source permanently for women, while gentling is for men. Shielding is blocking someone from accessing the source.

Dark friends in the show are given much more solid reasons like the case with Dana. In the book, they’re just bad people. While she seemed to make sense, but the reality is, all life would end by breaking the wheel.

You're thinking of Shielding, which is a maintained block from the Source. Gentling is permanently cutting off from the Source.

Indeed. I would add that gentling is permanently cutting the source for a man and stilling is for a woman. For both female and male, shielding is called the same and is not permanent. Aes Sedai need to continuously channel to keep on the shield (as far as we know for now). More on ep4 for this anyway.

I LOVED Thom's song; he brought such a Tom Waits vibe to the character that I'd never thought of before. (My headcanon Thom reading the books growing up was Tom Skerritt; although David Strathairn is a close second, especially in his role as Klaes Ashford in The Expanse. The mustache alone!) I also thought the show did a better job of fleshing out villains, even average Darkfriends like Dena. If you are interested in the story of the man who couldn't forget, it is predominantly recapped in the prologue of the first book. You can also read the short story Robert Jordan wrote called "The Strike at Shayol Ghul", which is available on the WoT fansite Dragonmount. If you want to know more of the story without reading, there's also a twenty-minute screen adaptation of the prologue called Winter Dragon. It was a bad attempt to hold onto the screen rights by a company called Red Eagle Entertainment, it had a minuscule budget, and it aired without advertisement on FXX at 2 am. Also, it starred Billy Zane as Ishamael. And it is AWFUL. I LOVED Perrin and Egwene's time with the Tinkers. Ila's speech about her daughter and why she follows the Way of the Leaf hit so hard for me. The Tinkers set up Perrin's basic arc through the books with peace vs violence (one that RJ explores in many ways, as a way of dealing with his own experiences in Vietnam), but the show expands reincarnation to include all people, not just the Dragon or certain "great souls" (i.e. the people summoned by the Horn of Valere in the S2 finale.)

To the break the wheel means something else in WoT. IRL it's an idiom for doing a major change, or a reset as you put it. But in WoT it's to break the Wheel. Capital W. Because it means the Wheel of Time, that weaves all of reality into existence. So when Dana says she wants to break the Wheel, she means she wants to end all of reality, for eternity.

My favorite thing about WoT is the humor and relationships. I would say my biggest problem with the TV series is they haven't brought enough of the humor in. This is another thing 10 episodes would help with.

Hello Ladies. I think you meant to say shield him, not gentle him (aka prevent him from using the power temporarily rather than permanently). Btw, the blood filling up the pool was our second Dragon's fang symbol in the show (comma symbol, first occasion being the slaughtered sheep).
