Merida is actually going under a massive regeneration. 10 years ago, you could buy one of the decrepit buildings in centro for $15k, now they cost $250k and up for something that needs a total rehab. My husband and I spent a month there in 2021. The people are friendly and we felt very safe. We walked all over the place, including to some of the suburbs north of centro. The only issue we had was a couple of dogs came after us, which had gotten out of their yard. Thankfully, the owner wrangled them before they could attack us. We didn't see any encampments, open drug use, or social disorder, like in most NA cities. The last time I was in downtown Toronto, a woman was walking around at the corner of Shuter and Dalhousie, naked from the waste down. Another random female stranger said she was going to slit my throat when passed each other at Dundas Square. Vancouver is the same. Sad.

Yes that is one thing about Latin America or honestly a lot of the world to watch out for. Stray animals or peoples animals who are loose. We had similar issues in the Philippines. It definitely was noticeable the changes and development happening in Merida. Lots of foreigners are either moving in or investing. Oh and yes Toronto is a disaster zone in some parts of the city, Hamilton as well. It's sad since those are the two cities Natalie and I grew up in and it's really not the same place it used to be.

Extremely humid city, as are all in the Yucatan jungle, plus it's among the rainiest of our cities, which may help explain the decrepit looks of buildings whose paint needs retouching more often than not...

Ah okay, that does make a lot of sense. Thanks for the information

Hey again, I commented on your video about San Pedro, Guatemala two months ago regarding the time I spent there in the late 1980's. In 1982-83 I taught English in Merida for a year, after graduating with a BA in Spanish from Kent State University, in Ohio. Watching your video I can smell the streets of Merida, what a visceral memory! I got Dengue fever during my time in Merida and am super glad to hear Natalie did not get malaria. I'm getting sticker shock again. A room in a casa de huespedes right off the zocalo (grande plaza) was $5.00 per night, and during my tenure as a 26 year old teacher I rented a two bedroom house in a newly constructed neighborhood for $60.00 per month. If I had to choose between San Pedro or Merida though, I'd choose Merida. There's so much to see in Merida that one can't see it all. Too bad I didn't have the opportunity to have you stop in at Yucatan Trails travel agency near the grande plaza. You could have surprised my Canadian friend Dennis Lafoy (who owns the place) by sending him my regards. My absolute favorite taco restaurant was "El Cangrejito" (the little crab), right around the corner from Yucatan Trails. When I returned after ten years the owner still remembered me. My familial size hammock was $30.00 USD. Cotton. I still have it an it's in mint condition. FYI, the main cathedral is made from the stones of the Mayan pyramid that occupied the area. And in the anthropology museum I saw my first skull with incisions showing some skillful brain surgery. Yikes! It's super cool that one can use the internet and cell phones to navigate one way through any city on the globe. My time there was pre-internet, so I had to rely on the available travel guide books that were available at that time. I'd be curious to know how you support your travels. You're obviously traveling on as much of a "shoestring budget" as possible.

Point the camera anywhere else but on yourselves all the time. People want to see the city. Just a little critique.
