I saw the Who in Frankfurt in the Festhalle 1977 or 1978 . There are balconies around the stage, so you have a very good looking what's happening on the stage (and behind). Something I mentioned from the look above. Before the destruction begins, Pete changed the guitar. Maybe a cheaper or a prepared one? And the amp they kicked down doesn't have a glowing lamp and when it fall down, there was no powercord visible. The show must go on.... the cheaper way.

1. Anger, although not always aimed at equipment failure. 2. Pure Adrenaline. Often times, the performer “leaves the conscious plain” and doesn’t even realize what’s occurred. 3. It’s Pete Townshend, just breaking a string will set him off. 4. Kurt Cobain…his destruction was more a release than anything.

If you’re gonna do “The Who” act and destroy your equipment afterwards make sure you’re not playing a Fender. It’s best to have a Gibson that’ll explode after one strike. Fenders with their bolt on necks + truss rods are much tougher to break.

Because when The Who smashed their gear it was a performance, and they didn't hold back... The copycats think you just whack the guitar on the ground until it breaks. They're missing the point... Townshend would throw it, spin it, catch it and kind of dance with it before destroying it. And when he did smash it on the stage there was no hesitation, worrying about getting hurt. He just went for it.

And what makes you so sure those guitars were perfect? Pete has said that most of what he smashed was factory seconds - they already had some sort of problems to begin with.

Neil Young shouldn't have been included, as that wasn't smashing, but breaking strings.

After The Who paved a (giant) highway for stage destruction, all the others that followed and emulated that looked a tad ridiculous, not to say pathetic. Cheers

Who (pun unintended) says that they were “fine” to begin with? Pete’s said that the Deluxes he smashed up were Factory Seconds- they already had some issues to begin with. And the others, he repaired just enough to make it through a few shows before it was completely unrepairable. So, yeah….
