Not prog, but Pete Townsend's a genius in using synthesizer loops. This gave them a different tapestry than most other hard rock bands. Kenny Jones on the drums, after Keith died. Although a much more technically proficient drummer, we all missed hearing Moon's bombastic cacophony.

T-Rex was a contemporary band, as was Pink Floyd et al..they used to frequent each others gigs, to see what they were up to. While The Who was Roger Daltrys band, most songs were written by Pete Townshend. This album, Face Dances, was their 9th studio album released in 1981, and the Producer, Bill Szymczyk,is best known for his work with the Eagles. You guys are right, they are def top tier!

This was almost too clean sounding, more in the vein of Townsend's Empty Glass album, which this song probably wouldn't have been good enough for. Maybe it was going to end up on Empty Glass but Pete thought it was better as a Daltry song? Probably something related to Empty Glass.

This song is about Townsend's love of Rock N Roll. He mentions T. Rex with praise and scorn as Glam Rock had come and gone but the Who's Next album still lives on as one the best albums ever made. This song is really about the longevity of the Who and how they've outlasted the genres of the 60s and 70s and are still going strong. Read the lyrics carefully. "I know I've been wearing crazy clothes and I look pretty crappy sometimes, but my body feels so good that I still sing a razor line everytime" is really about Townsend as an elder statesman of Rock N Roll getting older but he still feels great creatively and in performance.

Kenney Jones is the drummer. Formally of Small Faces, which after Steve Marriott left and Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood were added became the Faces. Ronnie Wood has been with the Stones for close to 30 years.

It be worth it to listen to "Live at Leeds" (from 1970) for some historic perspective. I'd recommend "My Generation" from that album. This was before they incorporated a synthesizer in their recordings. You might think they were a jam band after listening to that album.

I enjoy Roger Daltrey's storytelling. He's very compelling. The Who was still great after Keith Moon but he added something that made that original line up phenomenal. 1964-1978 was the Keith Moon era.

Kenney Jones worked with the band for a couple of years after the passing of Keith Moon. Jones is most notorious for his work with sixties band Small Faces and seventies band The Faces. The band broke up in the mid eighties though occasionally re-uniting (Live-Aid in 1985 was their first return) almost always with "guests". Zak Starkey, son of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr became their official drummer after the new millennium when they actually returned to touring. Today only Rodger Daltry and Pete Townshend are still with us.

One of my favorite authors, horror writer Clive Barker (Pinhead's Dad 🙂), painted the portrait of one of my favorite bass players, John Entwistle (RIP). His is the 1st painting, row #3. My cousin got to see this tour in 1982 at JFK Stadium (RIP) in Philadelphia. Santana & The Clash (!) opened for the band. I begged to go, but my mom said no because I was 12. Total bummer. Kenny Jones was the drummer, three years after Keith Moon's passing. Jones had been with the Small Faces/Faces and was a very competent drummer but IMO (and many who loved the Who) he was perhaps too precise and "tight", which should have been fine but he was replacing a guy who was unorthodox and spontaneous and never played the same way twice. It was just a situation where Kenny wasn't going to win, and he just didn't make the group sound close to what they were before. Many years passed before Zak Starkey (who is Ringo Starr's son) happened to join the Who and he had learned to play as a kid not from his dad who wasn't keen to teach him, but from his "Uncle" Keith (Ringo and Keith were friends) and Zak has a more earthy, organic playing style which is about as close to Moon as you're gonna get. I truly believe that having Zak there now has allowed Roger and Pete to carry on better than they could have with any other drummer.

Even though he was not the best drummer for the Who, Kenney Jones was much better than "very competent". I saw the Who in '67 and '68 so I'm aware of what Keith Moon meant to the group but I also saw Kenney Jones with the Faces in the early '70s and he played great including one of the best drum solos I've ever witnessed...he played it like a Gene Krupa style swing jazz drummer keeping the momentum of the song going through the whole solo...

The Who's most recent studio album was released in 2019 and is simply called "WHO". The most amazing thing to me about that most recent album is how great Roger Daltrey's voice is on it. My favorite song on the album is "Beads On One String". Vintage Daltrey vocals which soar into the Stratosphere at points in the song. I got to see The Who perform at Fenway Park in Boston in September of 2019 when they played several songs from the new album. BTW, The Who is currently touring Europe.

The late sixties featured the band as a stripped down straight ahead rock/blues band with hits like MY GENERATION, THE MAGIC BUS, YOUNG MAN'S BLUES. The drummer is Kenny Jones, who had been in Faces with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood (who joined the Stones). Jones replaced Moon who OD’d in 1978. This was the first album without Moon, and it came before the album with Eminence Front which you previously heard. These two albums were the last we got from them for decades.

I saw them play in Seattle on this tour. Jones was solid and held his own covering Moon and did well on the new tunes but didn’t have the same impact as Keith. They were still far above pretty much any other band that I have seen live.

The Who's sound was partly influenced by gaming in the 70s. Video games and early electronics. Hence the album Tommy. The Who was and still is ahead of their time. The Who gives a nod and scorn toward T. Rex here which are considered the inventors of Glam Rock in 1967, and then Townsend mentions the landmark Who album Who's Next (1969) as the double entendre "who's next?" to challenge The Who (?) as the Punk movement had morphed to New Wave in 1981 and the Who were still going strong through the genres that has come and gone in the 60s and 70s by the time they released the Face Dances album in 1981. This song partners well with "Who Are You" (1978) where Townsend playfully goes to blows with the Punk movement. I almost take the lyrics here to be Townsend's love of Rock N Roll and his muses rather than his wife at the time.

FM radio loved this song. The Who added lots of new fans. But their hard core favs definitely were disappointed. It was a date song, not a jam. It was a departure. Probably because Pete Townsend working on new material for Empty Glass shifted his artistic ear. But maybe also they didn't want to do any heavy jams without Keith Moon, still not over that loss?

I think Pete really liked this song, or maybe just performing it, but I've seen the Who play this a number of times. And Pete really commits to playing the hell out of it! And Roger takes more liberties with his vocals when they perform it live too, really trying to improve on his studio vocals. They're just a great band, the greatest to me.

A similarly-titled but much shorter "The Hawker," and a masterpiece song that kicks off a masterpiece album, "Overture" from "Tommy."
