Our Place in Sicily

Күн бұрын

We're Jenn and Matt and we bought a 31 room abandoned palazzo on the slopes of a volcano in Sicily. Join us for this restoration journey as we bring it back to life with the help of many, many wonderful Sicilians and others from around the globe. It's a big project but we're excited to bring this beautiful home back to life as our new home in Piedimonte Etneo, Sicily and to be able to share it with the local community.
In this video Jenn talks about the giant speed bump that just slowed down the restoration to a complete stop. Always ready to find the silver lining, Jenn also shares a few good things to help level out the bad. It feels like every home renovation on HGTV is always stopped by something very time consuming, very expensive, or both. This project is no different. Let us know in the comments what you would do! And as always, like, share, and subscribe--we could use some good news!

Oh Jen, If I were in your shoes I would be curled up in a ball with a blanket over my head. This past month my 130 year old house needed sewer lines replaced, roof fixed and today chimney bricks repointed. That seems minor compared to the amazing renovation you have taken on. You manage to present a positive attitude - you and Matt are courageous. Good luck with this next phase.

Oh goodness! You do have a gem of a place, too! We are either courageous or crazy-or a little of both!

Your channel just popped up in my feed. 🎉. Love what you are doing and your outlook is great. It will serve you well throughout. Would love to hear more on how you and Matt decided to make this move, did you keep your home in Boston, do you speak Italian? Interested in whatever you are willing to share. My husband and I love Sicily and I’m excited to see your vision come to life. Not sure if I respond to questions posed in other videos will pop up if there older or do I respond only to current videos. Not sure how you review comments. One recommendation is to take a picture either of the front of the palazzo or a room within to use as your logo for the channel. For the guesthouse bathroom and all bathrooms, yes to bidets, no to the glass used in the doors. I do like the glass door idea, I’m just not a fan of that particular glass door, looks too modern. You might be better off locating some reclaimed doors that match the style of the palazzo. Wishing you lots of energy and patience as you move forward. Though I don’t think you’ll need it.

Amanda thanks for taking the time to write such a great message. As of now I’m trying to respond to all questions and read every comment. If you haven’t watched yet, check out our chit chat with Jenn and Matt playlist where we talk about a lot of these things in detail. The short answer is we sold our home, 90% of our stuff, I got an investor visa and Matt comes as family. We are now both Italian residents and we speak Italian but not we’ll, yet. I’m B2 level right now. We came on a trip with our cheese store customers and fell in love. We are not Italian at all. Thanks for all of you thoughts, too. I reall struggle with the bidet but we will reconsider it as we go. I think we need a whole video just on this topic! Glad to have you here!

Hiccups come… and hiccups go. I love what a great attitude you have. Being flexible in our thinking serves us in so many ways- solutions you wouldn’t have thought of come in that wouldn’t have if we were so constricted and reactive to a situation. Good for you. It’s exciting from this end to witness the process you are living. Thank you for sharing this journey.

The wood doesn't have a beef with you. Love this episode, super helpful for learning what happens to these gorgeous buildings that are abandoned and what Italy (or those who invest here) have to take on to bring it back to life.

My friends would tell you that I’m weirdly upbeat. I also laugh at funerals. But seriously, life is to short to sweat the small stuff. We are still lucky to have a palazzo at all! 😜😍😁☀️

Jenn - hang in there! Like you said, this gives you a bit of time to get some other things done, finish your plans, make material selections and probably a hundred other things you haven’t thought of yet. It will be May before you know it. You just don’t know what you’re going to encounter with projects like this - you’re super brave for taking this on! I’m definitely going to stay tuned and track your progress - you absolutely can learn a ton from other’s construction projects. And sometimes, getting things done in Italy includes surprises & delays and requires flexibility & (a lot of) patience (always). You’re taking the challenges on with grace and understanding … bravo! We were just a few weeks away from closing on a place in Tuscany (just got back from seeing it, meeting with the geometra, etc.) and just found out today about serious roadblocks that will be preventing us from moving forward. It’s so hard when you get your heart set on something. But this one just must not have been “the one” for us. In the meantime, I will live vicariously through you and (patiently) restart our search. I’ll let your positive attitude rub off on me when I get discouraged. 😊

Since this news we’ve also had some really fun news and I’ve noticed my level of stress has gone way down-at least where the house is concerned. We’re so sorry to hear about your setback but here is your silver lining… 1. you didn’t find out too late. 2. You learned something new to watch for. 3. You learned something you can share with others and knowledge is power (so says schoolhouse rock) 4. When you get the right place that sings to your soul, you’ll be SO glad that this current one didn’t get in the way. But oh so hard in the moment. I hope the right thing is just around the corner!
