Why this event wasn't covered AT ALL in my history classes is insane. Watching this movie with such little historical context literally blew my mind. I mean sure, it's an adaptation and some of it is dramatized, but holy shit to what IS true to life.

If you want your mind blown, watch the trials online in their entirety acted out on KZbin in doc films. The judge was so biased, and disgusting, I can't believe he wasn't disbarred. I remember these times well, being older. Abbie was a remarkable guy.

I was 4 years old when I was in the middle of this riot. This film gave me full sensory flashbacks of things I did not remember living through. Of the tang of the teargas, the sounds of the screaming of my mother as she defended us from the police batons, with nothing but her bicycle and her body. I felt this movie and it was good.

Frank Langella acting as Judge Hoffman was an incredible performance among stellar acting this film. Watching this flawed man who had entered that courtroom with a guilty verdict already in mind made me HATE that kind gentleman. What a brilliant film, and what incredible acting from absolutely every single actor involved.

My brother was in elementary school with Abby Hoffman's children, and they all went on a civil rights march together - with Abby Hoffman, in Boston. When I was 13, I went to an anti war demonstration on the Boston Common, with Abby Hoffman speaking. He was electrifying. But I left because I could see police batons being used on the crowd.

Too bad this isn't on Broadcast TV so even the poor folks can see it. I wasn't in Chicago, but we had the Berkeley Barb & the SF Oracle and the Texas Observer who were there and did great journalism. The young head of the Chicago Black Panthers, Fred Hampton, was murdered a bit later at 4am sleeping next to his 8 months pregnant partner by the Chicago police. Judge Hoffman was a hanging judge & he was out to get these guys. William Kunstler was a definite hero in the way he defended them. Tom Hayden married Jane Fonda and became a state legislator in California. This is a huge story and the differences between Abby Hoffman & what Trump pulled on Jan 6, 2021 should be obvious. I met Dave Dellinger when I was in Chicago in 1963 and he was a dedicated non violent direct action follower of Ghandi. I hope I get to see this movie, but I refuse to honor Pay TV with a subscription. Misuse of the people's airways. Oakland CA

That Aaron Sorkin, supposedly an informed writer can say, "We never seen anything quite like it before" after the NYC draft riots of 1863 and numerous bloody labor conflicts from after the Civil War up to the 1930s, really says a lot about the shallow sense of history of this country's creative class.
@Ratherbejaded3 жыл бұрын
I think he meant as a whole, not just the riots. But the trial and that “the whole world was watching” people were listening to it on the radio, hearing about it on tv. Which hadn’t happened before for an event like that.
