Was this used in Iraq? We know tanks like the Abrams are amazing based on their results in Iraq. We saw battles where hundreds of enemy tanks were killed with zero losses to the enemy. I'm curious if this preformed in Iraq and how well it did. Vehicles like the humvee did poorly in Iraq and had to be changed. People thought the Abrams would be bad because of how huge it was but the massive size was worth it when you can kill enemy tanks way beyond what they can kill you at.

For urban warfare I think it's a great tool and today in Ukraine it could be very versatile equipped with ATMs, like TOW (or modern versions) , I don't know what happened to those, they werejust in testing when I was in service, 30 years ago.

The Wiesel can reach speeds of 75 km/h and even 50 km/h off-road. It is ideal for any terrain and can climb gradients of up to 60%. The Wiesel can often be repaired very quickly in the field, just 10-15 minutes to replace the whole engine in the field! Thanks to its agility, the Wiesel does not necessarily need strong armour, as the tactic is always hit and run and the Wiesel can be camouflaged very well. In manoeuvres, the Wiesel has shown itself to be a serious opponent, even leaving MBT allies in their wake. Combined with the air defence variant and the reconnaissance version, the Wiesel is capable of many tactical manoeuvres. An extremely versatile and good system and it is a great shame that the Bundeswehr is now parting with it.

Ex South African Defence Force 20mm ratel gunner here from late seventies and early eighties, speed counts alot and makes for a difficult target to hit if you don't have some sort of lock on weapon, (ratel speed up to 120 kph on or off road 😉), even our much bigger ratels wer so good on the battle field with many different uses found for them but originally a troop carrier and fire support platform, this awesome cheeky little armored vehicle seems perfect with its auto cannon, speed and size and will have a huge impact on the battle field deffo 👍

The Wiesel is a great little vehicle with tremendous capacity! I can envision a light cavalry troop with platoons of Wiesel 1 and 2 sporting 30MM auto cannon TOW missiles, and anti-ATGM systems. The Wiesels would be backed-up by CV120s. The Troop HQ would 3x Wiesel mortar carriers for indirect fire support. These are all light weight systems that can use lower class bridges. Their low silhouette makes them easier to conceal and find cover, but their fire power makes them very lethal if they are forced to engage the enemy as in a meeting engagement or counter-recon fight! Security is speed and stealth! IRT air drop the Germans should use the US Army Airborne system of specially built aluminum pallets and heavy drop parachutes! As demonstrated it is great for Airborne/Air Assault operations also!

You know this wouldn’t be so great in an open plain and for mass battle.. However with the proven effectiveness of shoulder fired weapons on tanks. This is a very fast heavily armed commando. Thirty operators on 4 wheelers destroyed a Russian convoy.. Throw three of these in the mix, fighting at night? They would be horror stories combined with drone support and infantry.. This newer tankette has much potential for extremely lightweight variants including unmanned. An assault force can use both manner and unmanned variants to decrease risk without revealing which are manned to the enemy combatants. A potential for high highly effective, high energy electromagnetic anti-tank weapons mounted on unmanned variants is both an effective and casualty limiting method for force multiplying applications. The potential for upgrades and improvements as the weapons and armor technologies continue to modernize is infinite and will likely continue to be an important component for future warfare and keep this tankette viable for some time to come.

The British Bren Carrier lives on in concept. Nothing new therefore about this concept. The Bren carrier was used for medium and heavy MGs, Anti tank rifles, mortars, towed Anti tank guns, flame thrower, personnel carrier, ambulance, you name it, they did it. I had the pleasure of working with the Weasel in Denmark Exercise Cold Grouse in the airborne MND (C). Great machines.

Quite honestly the Bren Carrier seems more useful than these things since they could tow things and carry troops. I don't think you're gonna fit any extra troops in a Weasel 1, though perhaps if you cut out the gun you could haul a recon team of 3-4 troops but that'd be a fairly neutered vehicle.

What I miss is a trailer for ammo or some additional troops. You also could equip one with tools for trench digging. I also would give it a front protection against .50 cals, anything bigger can also penn 30 ton lights, so more armor doesn't matter that much.

@@havoc3742 The Humvee can carry TOW but it can't carry a 20mm cannon. There is nothing like the Wiesel in the World. The Scimitar and also the Russian series BMD-tanks are much heavier. Two Wiesel can be carried inside a CH-53/MH-47 helicopter.

A super light tracked vehicle like this would probably be ideal for the Indian Army in the Himalayas, especially the mortar and TOW versions, not to mention the recon one. Of course, the bent of German politics might not favour trading arms with India ( so ideally it should be a large order!!!😅) and it should pass trials at the 5-6000 metre altitudes at which the Army operates......

Ukraine is using several civilian ATVs for the very purpose the Weisel was developed. The Weisel is perfect for the Ukrainian guerrilla tactics, and more importantly, it can get through all that Ukrainian mud, hide in the forests, behind small rises, and in ditches. It is perfect for the Ukrainian terrain, easy to maintain to. You can change out an engine in 15 minutes. It only weighs in at 3 tons. It is a hella lot cheaper than a tank.

@@John_Redcorn_ No it is a scout and guerrilla vehicle. It is perfect for the tactics the Ukrainians use. It can destroy tanks with the Milan missile system. It can scout ahead and identify Russian units for the tanks and IFV's. In fact that is what the Germans use it for, and yes it is not a tank. But this is never what it was attended to be.

@@John_Redcorn_ Your missing the whole point. This vehicle fits Ukraine's tackles perfectly and it can run through the mud unlike wheeled vehicles. They can use it to set up ambushes and scout out terrain for the tank brigades. YES, it is MUCH cheaper than a tank! It is also easy to repair and maintain because the engines are the same engines used in VW's and Audi's. Ukrainian mechanics don't training, because the already work on VW and Audi automobile engines. Your argument has no merit, because I wasn't talking about tanks. I was talking about tactics.

This is what the Ukrainians need in the Donbas, especially the TOW version and Ocelot version. The Wiesel 2 with mortar version would be could mobile artillery that is easily hidden from Russian troops.

They could mount STUG-P launchers, tow a 120 mm mortar, launch drones from them, or a RWS .50 cal machine gun on these. It would be easier to hide these in wooded or urban terrain vs full sized armored vehicles.

They mentioned the APC version of it. It has 4 passengers. However from other things I read it may not be in service and may have only been a test vehicle. Perhaps that info is out of date and it's in service now. I don't know.

It is definitely rational for the US Marines or Taiwanese naval forces to adopt the Wiesel now that they are starting to retire the bigger Abrams and are switching to the WW2 "island hopping" strategy. Think about it, if a war between China and Taiwan (or the Phillipines) is to break out and the US decides to get involved. The Marines can just parachute these babies (with the appropiate modifications) onto the islands that may be too cramped and marshy for normal armor columns to provide more substantial firepower for the naval or parachuted infantries. Even if the Chinese manage to send their lighter ZTQ 15 onto the islands, the Wiesel's autocannons and missiles are more than enough to knock them out while maneuverable enough to get away from the incoming artillery barrage

They kind of did. It was called the CVRT, and served for many years in several different variants. They are currently being replaced with the Ajax Tracked combat vehicle.
