The Wiggles accept the 2022 Ted Albert Award | APRA Music Awards 2022

APRA AMCOS is delighted to announce that The Wiggles are the 2022 recipients of the Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music. The original blue, red, yellow and purple clad Anthony Field, Murray Cook, Greg Page and Jeff Fatt will receive their honour at the APRA Music Awards on Tuesday 3 May at Melbourne Town Hall.

I am honoured and humbled by the mention, Anthony! Thank you! Thank you also for acknowledging Rosemary Harle. She was such an inspired teacher, yes? I knew Ted Albert personally. He was my boss during my years of employment as Assistant Editor for the Classical/Educational Division at Alberts during the late 1970s, before I went on to work for the ABC and much later, to the Institute of Early Childhood where I met you, Murray and Greg. I always referred to Ted as Mr. Edward. That was back in the days of Vanda and Young - songwriting icons to be sure - who I also had the great honour of knowing personally. George and Harry wrote Hey St. Peter at the Steinway in my office, did I ever tell you? In those days, the Alberts recording studio (state of the art at the time!) adjoined my office on the 5th floor (another 5th, ha!) at Boomerang House in King Street, Sydney. Those were such formative years for everyone, myself included. If I may share this memory of Ted Albert with you: Mr. Edward. was the kindest of men, very tall and softly spoken. Everyone who knew him loved him, and loved him dearly! He was so unassuming and completely void of ego. When news came through that Mr. Edward had passed away, and I had to break the news to Dr. Franz Holford (my mentor and Senior Editor at Alberts), Franz wept openly as any father would over the loss of a son. There were no words, just a flow of tears. Where only the gentle are ever strong, many a kind soul die all too young. Mr. Edward was such a soul. I am sure that Mr. Edward would have been greatly pleased to know that The Wiggles were the recipient of this award, itself a representation of the honesty to be found through creativity. It is no small coincidence that creativity has a child's heart and you have entertained children all these years! Honesty after all is everything, is it not! So, thank you once again for the kind acknowledgment, Anthony! A shout out to Greg too, for the generous remembrance in his book. I will never forget. It means the world! Congratulations and blessings to you all!

And, where it is not for me to say to what extent my contributions to The Wiggle's beginnings saw them become who they are today, my input at both the creative and financial level towards the 1991 eponymous debut album was certainly substantial! That said, and although I am pleased that Anthony has acknowledged me in his acceptance speech, I want to thank you and all the Wiggles' fans who over the last year have expressed so much heartfelt gratitude towards me, and acknowledged me in a way I never thought imaginable. More than "fans", I consider you all my friends, and that is my own personal award: you! That from all of you, together with having known Ted Albert as I did - he was the loveliest person - is everything to me. Actually, I can even remember engaging in a conversation with Murray about Mr. Edward while he was still at university. Memories, how they can make for a life! I can also tell you that I have lived a blessed life. All my dreams have come true and I am satisfied. I would wish for you and everyone to experience the immense amount of joy I have through Music and my creativity. Where it has been my strength and my mainstay, it has also been my prayer! Be sure to always hold on to your dreams, they are your destiny in waiting. Believe me! Thanks and thanks again for your kindness! God bless you!

This band still rocks on 31 years later. Greg, Murray, Jeff, Anthony, Phillip, Sam, Emma, Simon, Lachlan, Tsehay, Kelly, Caterina, John and Evie and Pul Paddock make up one of the best kids bands of all time. You totally deserved this.

I remember 2 Wiggles concerts that I went to, one on August 15, 2010, and the other on August 19, 2019. I feel incredibly blessed from childhood to adolescence years seeing how much different it was in the past, looking at what's being presented in the present day, and hope that the band continues well into the future. To all Wiggles enthusiasts and members past and present, I am grateful of seeing how big this band has gone and that it makes me pleased with all you've given to many around the world.
