Thank you for this video! Really wise words on 2:10 . I wish that they will strong the strong Sorriai horses. I wish to have one when a horse will cross my pad.

Looks like my stallion Grelo in the beginning. Is it him? He came to Austria 2 years ago when he was about 2 years old. or maybe it´s his father in the video.

There is a horse breed indigenous to India that looks very similar to this. Locals call it an "old style Kathiawari'. Once upon a long time ago, I became interested in purchasing a Marwari and began speaking with English-speaking India breeders on Facebook, which is where I first saw photos of this version of the Kathiawari at the Pushkar horse fair. There was a mare with a foal. Both had dorsal and leg stripes and identical conformation to the Sorraia. It didn't take much for me to realize that these horses are either directly related to the now-extinct Barb. Indians don't even realize that they have these incredibly rare animals. They're generally used as pack laborers and are treated (from what I observed) rather shoddily. The horse accepted as a Kathiawari appears to be predominantly poorly-bred Marwaris.

Good lord, not this whole debate about the Sorraia again... Look, they're really interesting horses, I'll give you that. But they're firmly a domesticated breed. They're history is basically this: A guy thought that he saw a herd of wild horses by the Sorraia River in Portugal. Ten years later he came back in the area and couldn't find them again. So he set out to reconstruct them using horses that he handpicked out of local domestic herds. Seven mares were chosen. Four stallions were also chosen. He took these horses to his families estate and let them roam within the boundaries. A decade later, a Criollo stallion with the "look" that he was well... looking for, was imported and added to the population. And that's it, that's the extent of the Sorraia's foundation. The modern day population is pretty well inbred at this point thanks to only descending from 12 individuals. People other than the "discoverers" family didn't even become interested in the Sorraia until 1975! At that point, a grand total of... two local farms also agreed to breed them. A year later, in 1976, a small herd (Consisting of three mares and three stallions) was exported to Germany to establish a sub-population out of Portugal. And there you go, that's extent of the Sorraia's history. Certainly they could have their place in rewilding projects, especially in their native Iberian Peninsula... But to claim that they're a unique subspecies of horse is madness. Especially in light of the revelation that one of them featured in the founding of the Lusitano!

The Sorraia is a domestic horse breed that descends from farm horses collected by Ruy d'Andrade.

Lol, no. Sorraias are cool, but a primitive breed of horse they are not. They're just domesticated horses who have been selected to look primitive.
