Loved it. Isn't this poem very similar to Ode to a Nightingale in some ways ? Yeats is saying that "..my heart is sore" & Keats begins with " My heart aches.." & the reason behind this pain is also similar. Again towards the end Yeats says ".. when I awake.." he is sort of questioning is own state of being in the reality & there's Keats' ending to his ode "..Do I wake or sleep ?" How strange ! Doesn't matter if you're a romantic or a modern poet, if you're just not feeling it, if you're going through your own personal hell then, apparently, similar spontaneous overflow of powerful emotions make its way into your soul. I guess that's the power of art. As always it keeps going beyond time & impermanence.

Ma'am your explanations and insights are really good. But I feel like adding another perspective. Please do correct me if I am wrong. If we refer to another poem by Yeats, 'Sailing to Byzantium' we may find that he expresses a sense of displeasure for the natural sensory delights and glorifies the eternal existance. Even he wishes to be a golden bird on the golden bough that could never be annihilated by the onslaught of time. However, in this poem, 'Wild Swans at Coole' he is glorifying the natural birds, the swans. Even Yeats attributes immortality and timelessness as he says, "Their hearts have not grown old", which is in a way similar to the approach of romantic poets. So, Ma'am, don't you think this somehow appears to be contradictory?

Yes. Perfectly said. Yeats wrote over a long span and often changed the way he looked at life.

@NibblePop
@NibblePop 3 жыл бұрын
No, Yeats was not involved in the world war. In fact, he was quite critical of England's role in the war. He wanted to marry Maud Gonne but she repeatedly refused him. Eventually he married another woman. From where have you got the information that his wife left him or that his son died in war? Any reference?

Is 'nine and fifty' a random number here? Like 'ten thousand saw I at a glance'?
@NibblePop
@NibblePop 3 жыл бұрын
That is a very interesting way to look at this. I too feel that this number is more like a generalized number and Yeats did not actually count the swans. May be the odd number is used here to make it look more realistic and at the same time to emphasize that Yeats felt lonely because his beloved was not with him. But, unlike Wordsworth, this is not an exaggeration or hyperbole.

Ma'am it may be he found himself within those swans.. And it's an indirect reference to his unsuccessful love attempts towards Mount Gonne...As the 59th swan is companionless, he is too companionless.

the poem was written in 1916. Yeats was born in 1865. so he was 51 at the time of writing. he was speaking of the time when he was 51-19 (as mentioned in the poem "The nineteenth autumn has come upon me") = 32 years old.
