I still think this was one of the best productions of this play I have ever seen. It's a "comedy" but like so much of Shakespeare's comedy, there's a really serious story going on under the surface. The strange sexual overtones of this play are not entirely a laughing matter. Feste being the only one who gives true comfort to Olivia, and convinces her to stop being the maudlin. And the cruelty to Malvolio by Toby, Sir Andrew, and Feste... that's not a laughing matter when it happens in real life. This was all so very well done by these brilliant actors. I love this song, and have often had it humming in my head for twenty years now.

Song: “When that I was and a little tiny boy (With hey, ho, the wind and the rain)” By William Shakespeare (from Twelfth Night) When that I was and a little tiny boy, With hey, ho, the wind and the rain, A foolish thing was but a toy, For the rain it raineth every day. But when I came to man’s estate, With hey, ho, the wind and the rain, ’Gainst knaves and thieves men shut their gate, For the rain it raineth every day. But when I came, alas! to wive, With hey, ho, the wind and the rain, By swaggering could I never thrive, For the rain it raineth every day. But when I came unto my beds, With hey, ho, the wind and the rain, With toss-pots still had drunken heads, For the rain it raineth every day. A great while ago the world begun, With hey, ho, the wind and the rain, But that’s all one, our play is done, And we’ll strive to please you every day.

So many great actors in this movie! I recently realized that Richard Grant (Sir Andrew Aguecheek) was in Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker. You probably saw Helena Bonham Carter (Olivia) and Imelda Staunton (Maria) in the Harry Potter movies with Maggie Smith, who is the mother of Toby Stephens (Orsino). Mel Smith (Sir Toby Belch) was in Princess Bride. And of course, everyone knows Ben Kingsley (Feste).

This will always be our favorite Ben Kingsley role! (Hi rfresa😊) I’m working on learning the concertina part of this song so I’ve been listening to it repeatedly. I have to be careful not to surfeit lest the appetite sicken and so die, because this music is the best. Oddly, the KZbin video plays it in a different key than it is written (by Shaun Davey).

I have this movie and the sheer exuberance of this last bit with Ben Kingsley who plays a rather mystical Feste singing the rain it raineth everyday just adds to the magic. But his work is done he has to leave again.Olivia is happy. The Feste Olivia scenes in the movie are unusually interpreted but they do work well. Did Mr. Nunn sing and strum a lay here or am I mixing it with another Shakespearian work ? This is the only version where I really pitied Malvolio. T'was a scurvy trick to play upon him even if he were a pompous prideful lobcock...
@rolandscales93804 жыл бұрын
I just got the impression he was fired for being a disruptive influence, while the fat uncle Sir Toby and his fellow parasite Sir Andrew Aguecheek were booted out at the same time. Presumably Maria had handed in her (30 minutes') notice at the same time to tag along with Sir Toby, for whom she obviously has a soft spot.

Why didn't Feste stay for the wedding?
@furrettheferret95623 жыл бұрын
fools usually weren’t allowed at weddings when the play was made so he most likely said goodbye to Olivia before leaving to find a new home

After that trick on Malvolio, everybody needed to leave.
@ExodiaX53 ай бұрын
@@ishaa5948 well, everyone involved, yes. So definitely Feste, Toby, and Mariah. Andrew could've stayed, but he was deeply infatuated with Olivia, thus there was no reason for him to stay when he'd simply pine after a woman who said 'I do' to another man. Antonio could've also stayed, as Duke Orsino had released him. But judging by how he left, he seemed upset, most likely believing Sebastian no longer had need of him. But I believe Sebastian would/will always call Antonio a friend. However, Sebastian could not force Antonio to stay. Thus, we can only hope that Antonio finds peace and happiness someday, somewhere. And of course, Malvolio had no desire stay in a place where he believed EVERYONE had wronged him. Though technically, only Mariah, Toby, Feste, and that man who told Olivia what Maria had done (mary Toby) actually did anything to wrong Malvolio

It’s funny the themes in this don’t offend me at all. I find it innocent and playful. But the modern day gender bullshit is revolting to me. I wonder why that is.
@dpainter1526 Жыл бұрын
Because in the play, there is no confusion about what men and women are. Viola is Pretending to be a man, and the others treat her as one not to "affirm" any "identity," but because they really think she is one. Viola herself never dreams of thinking she is actually a man. She is embarrassed at walking in on Orsino's bath. She truly pities (and is irked by) Olivia for wanting something she cannot have. By contrast, all the woke stuff going on is trying to say everyone can be any gender they want, that there is no difference between men and women, or female/male. This concept would actually make this play impossible to do, as it centers on the fact that men and women are different and opposite beings.
