The wind farm paradox in southern Tamil Nadu

Muppandal in Tamil Nadu houses India’s largest operational onshore wind farm. The benefits and drawbacks though, are interlaced. For almost every person who regrets the decline of agriculture, at least one person in their family works at a wind or solar farm. Young people find the wind farms beneficial and say that the appreciation in land prices, jobs and continuous electricity have improved their lifestyles while the old rue the loss of agriculture.

Govt should make a law that any renewable energy generation project be it wind or solar should be installed on land which is not fit for agriculture or is semi-fertile.

@Mongabay India, Wind power are great, still agriculture can continue under the wind farms that should not be big issue. What I understand is that the Tamil Nadu govt did not pay for the electricity generated by these wind farms, instead purchase electricity from other states for higher cost. There are lot of politics behind the energy industry, and these energy ministers are interested in coal, this is where they can earn big money. Its the corrupt Indian system that is failing and not the wind farms.

Another interesting fact is that many people who went to work in companies are coming back to villages to take up agriculuture , that too organic agriculture. So in one side people wanted to leave farming but on another side people are entering farming.

But these people who are quitting farming din't know the fact that once farmering made up most of the GDP of india when indian rupees was even higher than US dollar. Now with the use of pesticides and chemicals we have spoilt the farming land and only make losses. But with organic integrated farming people are making 5 Lakhs per year to 10 lakhs per year also with just two to three acres. This much money you cannot make by working for a wind farm.
