It's so annoying that the English translation of this book is abridged, there are several passages missing because the publisher wanted to make the book shorter. It doesn't change the story, but it's still annoying lol

I loved After Dark -- the main character can't sleep, and her sister can't wake up. It's just odd -- but I loved it! It's pretty short, so it doesn't eat up a lot of time.

My favourite Murakami. So glad you agree.

This strange novel is definitely not for everyone. I found it confusing and had a hard time putting it all together. Murakami's writing is abstract art. You like it or you don't.

I felt no emotional life in this book. Gruesome was the Mongol section sure. Otherwise no hanging together, no unity, no reality. No blood and fire. No heart.

You're not alone. I made it about 360 pages into the book hoping I'd start caring by the next page and then questioned why I was putting myself through something for such little return. I DNF'd and donated the book. People seem to love it though.

This is my favorite Murakami

Same. I still remember the thrill of reading it, and how I didn't want it to ever end. It was the first one I'd read of his.

I don’t have a particular taste when it comes to reading - currently reading Mistborn and Still Life lol - but I can safely say Murakami is my favourite author of all time. Wind-up Bird is the best book I have ever read. It’s just incredible but he is a little esoteric even with such a massive following. *You should 100% read a short story collection of his next: The Elephant Vanishes. It is spectacular.

On the list it goes!

I read this book a couple years ago and thought it was fantastic. The section with the soldiers is one that haunts me to this day and is hands down the most disturbing scene that I have ever read. Also, if you enjoy short stories, there are some pretty solid ones in After the Quake and The Elephant Vanishes. As with any short story collection there are hits and misses, but I definitely had positive things to say about most of them.

I’ll watch this when I get to reading it! I just finished A Wild Sheep Chase and just got really annoyed by it. But I’m not dropping Murakami yet as I loved his other works.

I just finished "What Moves The Dead" by T. Kingfisher and "In Memoriam" by Alice Winn which was gut-wrenching yet stunning.

I'm still on the fence about if I want to start reading Murakami. Not sure it's for me. But I am super excited to hear your thoughts on the Women's Prize Shortlisted books.

I read this a long time ago. I remember really liking it, but never pretending to fully understand it. I think it's about time for me to read it again. Looking forward to your Women's Prize reviews!

king reviewing my fav Murakami! i've been meaning to reread this one because the end remains foggy for me. if you're planning to continue reading Murakami, After Dark is wonderful in its midnight diner atmosphere and Sputnik Sweetheart is just a biased favorite of mine in terms of its shorter length yet still upstanding Murakami's usual quips

Thank you! After dark is definitely on the list :)
