This is 100% true. And people love results that can are either directly connected or somewhat connect to revenue or even usage. You can easily stretch things by saying "I developed XYZ that was used to power the $1.9 billion of revenue per quarter" even if it was just a sign button on the home page. lol

I love your sense of humor and your honesty. Without doubt, you are a great software engineer, but admitting that even at your level you still exaggerated a little in some parts of your resume really took a lot of pressure off of me, as I am a CS student and aspiring software engineer myself & felt overwhelmed by the requirements of those competitive job positions. Thank you and looking forward to the next video! ;)

One piece missing there that is worth mentioning for contrast: for most experienced software engineers, your resume almost doesn't matter. They will want to know your experience to gauge total compensation, which roles you should interview for, and generally what to talk about. But if you have a few years of experience and/or solid education, in 2021 you WILL get an interview pretty much anywhere. Will you get the job? Well, maybe maybe not, but the resume has very little to do with it. If you're trying to get a foot in the industry and starting from scratch, then it's trickier. But for someone with a few companies behind their belt, you WILL get a call from an internal recruiter almost guaranteed, and it's what you say then that will decide where things go. Don't intentionally make a bad resume, but don't overthink it too much. If your background is pretty solid, you could write your linkedin url on a post-it note and that would be sufficient, even for FAANGs.

5:29 I agree, and for the same reason I don't mention OOP in my resume, but recently the managers I talked with were really interested about it, which surprises me. Of course it is important, especially for work in teams, but I consider it so essential and basic, it just simply surprises me. Seeing that you also mention it in your cv, and my recent experiences I will probably put it back too to reassure the people who read it that OOP is not an alien concept to me.

Well, it's back to basics for me [reviewing/re-learning what i learned in school] then exaggerrating a little in my resume [instead of overthinking/worrying about what to write and deciding not being good enough to apply]. Great video btw :) very informative.

I tell people all the time. Your resume is a blank canvas. You can paint a picture of what you "know". Recruiters are just doing a key word search. Your resume is a tool to get you in front of them so they can pass you onto a manager. You can pretty much put whatever you want in there. So long as you are prepared to speak to it intelligently in an interview.

Your resume was definitely boosted by the latter half with your projects, instead of your work experience that you exaggerated on! I would say that your tech experience probably proved to the employers that your interest and side projects could TRANSLATE into great work in tech as well, but it was built on your strong interest showcased by your awards and projects! Sick content, appreciate the blunt truth, really enjoyed and subscribed :)

I feel like if you worked at company like Microsoft or Amazon you are way ahead of everyone else already. Just putting that on a resume would be enough to get hiring managers attention and you wouldn't need to exaggerate with the experience as much. Whereas if you worked at some unknown company then what you write for experience becomes more important in order to attract their attention, to the point where you may need to exaggerate a little.
