Plus there's the added irony that I think he gets that this would be a great story to write on at the newspaper but that the only reason he heard about it was because he left the newspaper for politics, and since he's now in politics he couldn't write the story because then it would send his ass down the river as well as Carcetti's, but still he's just sitting on a great story that no one else would be able to get so there's a defining career moment for him except now he's in the wrong career. Norman Laughing And His Response Was Politics 101
@nihilusJ909 жыл бұрын
I like how Norman saw the irony in this situation (and wishes he could write on it, as a reporter), but there's still another layer of irony on top of that, which is unknown to him. It's that people from his own 'tribe' (reporters) are using the very same lie and manufacturing their own lies, contributing to the whole fiasco. And once the bubble bursts, there are already too many people involved to let the truth come out. And thus comes the ''discuss this first as a matter of public policy'' which basically means ''If y'all could swallow this shit, so no one loses their job, that'd be great'' That's why none of the top people ever take responsibility, and things like this never get to court... In a sense, they ARE above the law.

That was one of the things that made The Wire so outstanding to me. As well as being entertaining, it was almost educational, showing you layers of corruption from seasons 1-5 right from the police and street dealers, all the way up through "the system" into the higher levels of politics. After it all finished, and with that profound but sort of harshly realistic/depressing ending, it just felt like a wonderful experience.

@Candystripedshredder9 жыл бұрын
+Kevin Kibble As I recall, there weren't sufficient police resources (or interest) to make a case against Marlo Stanfield, who was, in fact, dropping bodies all over Baltimore unchecked. McNulty tied pretty ribbons around dead bodies and wrote ribbons into old Coroner reports in order to make it look like a nutty serial killer was operating in the city. The non-existent serial killer brought Federal attention (and Federal funding) to the Baltimore Police Department, which afforded McNulty and his fellow officers the basic resources (roadworthy cars, paid overtime, etc.) that they needed in order to do their jobs effectively. TL:DR - The murders weren't fake, he simply jazzed up the suspect's profile.

It’s beautiful how McNulty can be viewed. Personally, I think he is the best cop on the show. People can say he was selfish, he didn’t care about anyone, but he cared about the job & only the job. The city ate him alive. He was crafted by his experiences in the street, the mass corruption, and seeing endless dead bodies with nobody giving a damn about them. I know it’s a show, but for a second just put yourself in his shoes. He consistently sees murders, see what it is doing to children, learns of his friend’s (Bodie) death, chases serial killers who tear apart the city he loves, and absolutely nothing is done about it all so people can make more money and have more power Is McNulty the bad guy? Or is he a product of his environment? Every level of Baltimore in the show is corrupt. He’s the only character in the show who is corrupt to stop people from dying.

I love the quote, that comes right after this scene, when Daniels is furiously considering just spilling the beans to the newspapers about all of this: Rhonda Pearlman: "This is my career. This is everything. You go public and it hurts Carcetti. Maybe he doesn't get to be governor, but he's still the mayor and Bond is still my boss and you know the weight will not fall on them, it NEVER does!" Daniels: "Christ!"

Aiden Gillian is amazing in this scene, Reg E Cathey immaculately becomes the viewer watching all this go down, but the absolute pinnacle of this scene is Lance Reddick's Daniels leaving the room. His expression as he walks through the door on exiting could burn through concrete. Should just show this in acting classes and say "yo, this is how you do it" because it's not big, expressive or showy, it's all in tone and delivery. Hell, The Wire is a 60 episode showcase of tone, body language and delivery
@vmark783 жыл бұрын
And that! Right there, is why The Wire was such a great show. All that "matter of policy" line is exactly how those private closed door talks work. And from that the truth is massaged.

I fucking love this scene. He's speechless, breathless, he keeps trying to run with a sentence but it all leads back to the same realization. Such good acting.

To think, carcetti took joy going after Royce’s seat because of hamsterdam
@JavierCastillo-vc8ih4 жыл бұрын
And that's why I think this is a great scene. Lazy writing would of had him exploding in anger or giving some self righteous speech immediately. Instead, it's closer to real life in that he is stunned. He can't form words because of how monumental of what just got dropped into his lap. We all have been there and can relate. One of my favorite scenes.

You can say that The Sopranos is the best drama series ever. You can lionize Breaking Bad as a work of art. You can laud Game of Thrones by epic sweep. All reasonable. But nobody has yet topped The Wire.

Carcetti after this: Fuck Baltimore, I'm going to work for Westeros instead. Lt. Daniels after this: Fuck Baltimore, I'm going to work for Toys R Us instead.
@JDrakeify11 жыл бұрын
everyone's talking about how carcetti lost his idealism and was corrupted by the office, all this is true, but i genuinely think this was a lot less likely to be the case if he had taken the bail out of the schools at the end of season 4. He could focus on solving the city's crime problems, and he wouldnt worry as much about what other people think as he wouldnt be running for governor. Its his careerism, that made him like we see in season 5, and if you look at that decision, if he had taken the bailout, i think a lot of the negative aspects of the final ending would've been better.
@anthonyanderson930310 жыл бұрын
Ironically enough we've seen that play out in real life time after time again. All these guys care about his getting elected to that next higher office i.e. mayor to governor to perhaps even president (ahem O'Malley)
@ajbahus10 жыл бұрын
Had he taken the bail-out not only does he not get elected Governor but it's possible Nerese beats him in the next mayoral election too. The only reason she played ball was because Tommy was going to give up the mayor seat to go to Annapolis. He was stuck between a rock and a hard place.
@ротатоаск8 жыл бұрын
How would Nerese beat him for mayor if he took the money? I'm not well versed in politics but surely using THAT money to solve the school's deficit instead of the police budget would gather a lot more public votes and approval from the public, especially when he could enforce his quality arrests stance since the police department wouldn't be underfunded. If anything he'd be very popular.
@ajbahus8 жыл бұрын
I think his advisors mentioned that if he took the bailout money they'd be giving up local control of education and there would be changes in the teacher's unions contracts that would allow them to removed tenured faculty. Potato Sack
@ротатоаск8 жыл бұрын
ajbahus Regardless, Carcetti was definitely not stuck between a rock and a hard place. He should have risked his political career for the interests of the people who trusted him to fix the city's crime epidemic. He should have taken the money even if it meant that he would only have one term as mayor. Colvin risked his own pension to set up Hamsterdam. Daniels quit as commissioner to not become a stat puppet. Heck, you hear about police officers in violent third world countries who have risked the lives of their families instead of accepting a bribe. Carcetti had no excuse. But instead of doing the right thing, he put his political career before his people. And mind you, he could have had plenty of career choices other than politics.
