I really hated his character in season 1, long before Wallace... As the show went on though you realise he's just another product of his environment and out of all the idiots around him he was one of the smarter ones. Granted he did still do stupid shit and didn't always take the necessary precautions... Search "The Wire Splash"

Honorable mention: Frank Sobotka... even though it happened offscreen, his death was still devastating as he basically got murdered for trying to help his son.

@hamiltoncrete6741
@hamiltoncrete6741 4 жыл бұрын
@@tradez401 I think the issue was the time was spent between the police, the docks, the projects and now the Greeks when the first season was just the projects and the police. The third season was projects and police again with some of the greek in there. Fourth season was the kids and police but half of the kids dads were in Barksdales crew. That's why season 5 was lackluster. They included all of the elements from the previous 4 seasons and then added the dumb media element.

It fit quite well actually, Omar was always on his guard but when it came to kids he had a soft spot, he disregarded the kid in the store in a way he never did others, they explained it in an interview wish I had the link. @@paulspl2581 Absolutely. Producer David Simon spoke in an interview about how the chess scene with D'Angelo, Wallace, Bodie and Poot was written to foreshadow the fate of those characters. When D'Angelo explains pawns he says, "They get capped quick. They be out the game early." The camera momentarily focuses on Wallace. He ended up dead because he had a heart and a conscience. Poot was the only one still alive by the time the series ended.

That moment is meant to show the very opposite I think. She's a hard core biatch most of the time. She's a million miles from almost every other female character in the show, but right at that moment, she's just like every other girl, concerned about how pretty she looks. What's even more powerful is that Mike recognises this and allows her that moment as it will be her last.
@vanillathunder3024
@vanillathunder3024 3 жыл бұрын
@@davidlean1060 you’re right...it showed a glimpse of her humanity. What I meant was how cold blooded she was in the face of imminent death. No begging, no pleading, just accepting that this was her end. “You look good, girl” was the perfect response from Mike. All in all this was a well written, well acted, powerful scene.
@davidlean1060
@davidlean1060 3 жыл бұрын
@@vanillathunder3024 It's a brilliant little scene for sure. You learn so much about her and Mike. I felt kinda sorry for her right there and then, not because she was getting clipped, she fully deserved that given the rules of the game, but because she probably never had a chance of a decent life. I imagine she was no different to all the other young hoppers, dragged into the game at an age when she wasn't smart enough to resist.
@TheFreshTrumpet
@TheFreshTrumpet 3 жыл бұрын
@@davidlean1060 fascinating how many ppl took it as her reverting to some feminine stereotypes, hardcore projecting your own assumptions for no reason lol. She’s not the first g to ask if she looks good before she dies, and to me it was an excuse to turn her head so she didn’t get shot it the face. “she’s just like every other girl, concerned about how pretty she looks” pretty cringe takeaway lol
@davidlean1060
@davidlean1060 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheFreshTrumpet Fair enough. I saw it as an imitate moment between the two. Mike is going to do herin anyway, but he allows to be a regular girl and not a hardcore killer in her last moments. I see it in one light, you another. I don't agree with you, but thanks for replying none the less.

This show is so genius. They drop you in a world with these characters, show you who they are and what they’re about. Then without even telling you they’re doing it they show you exactly how they became who they are. They show that people don’t become who they are overnight and that it’s an accumulation of past trauma and the things they’ve had to do makes them what they are.

Thomas Grey you can play the game without a name. Omar lasted a long time because he was smart. The character Omar is based on... lived and was never got. Thing is your name, the more it rings out the more you are obsessed over...cops, rival dealers rival stick up crews, judges, and citizens. Normal people are the worst to know your name. The public will end you so be quite. Fuck your pride if you are going to be a dealer have a front man who everyone thinks is in charge and you stay quiet. If you are a stick up kid/crew don't show your face or say your name. Nobody can retaliate if you don't exist. In my day people were getting robbed by ghosts.

Snoop's death still gets to me. She was one of the hardest characters in the show... and her final line was asking how her hair looked. She knew (like all of the soldiers there) growing up in the game that she could die early. Maybe she even envisioned it happening growing up (and so when this happened, it wasn't the worst way to go out and she accepted it quickly). But Snoop was still a human, a woman, no matter how much of a cold killer they made her out to be. Snoop finally showed a sensitive side to her, wanting to look good before dying; and it also made it seem like Michael did know more about her that wasn't shown on screen in that she was a human with emotions, and he told her she looked good without hesitation before killing her. Like man, to ask something as vulnerable as how she looked before dying just pulls on the heart string and is one of the reasons why this show was so damn good. Even the hardest gangster in the show was just doing it to get by... she wasn't a comic book villain, but rather just a human trying to survive in her world.

I like the scene with Chris, Snoop, and Butchie, the way Chris stood and watched the man scream in pain and yet still keep silent is cold and calculated, but he still has respect for him, almost being merciful to him for his strength and ending his suffering quickly. It also shows how much of a disconnect there is between life in the streets and life in the establishment. Even the cops had not a clue until they got out of their patrol cars and started going under cover and getting sources. They were suprised at how bright they were. They might not have had degrees and creditials, but they knew how to survive for a little while in their environment.

The one thing that makes me have a next level hatred for Marlo's crew is because they remained so cool and never stopped having heart of stones even in the face of their own death. Never showing a shred of fear or remorse. Some would call that admirable but personally that shit is what freaks me out the most. I'm much more comfortable with the guys in the Barksdale crew (apart from Bird) who had a shred of remorse.

Definitely watch The Wire and don't miss Boardwalk Empire either. While I liked Sopranos and Oz, the "can't wait to watch the next episode" factor wasn't there for me as much (not like the binge worthiness of shows like Breaking Bad)... And, to me Oz just had too much unbelievable stuff (like a guard dying each episode and no repercussions happening lol). Wire and Boardwalk Empire are 2 of the best series out there as they have it all! You'll still be thinking about it after watching an episode; such good stuff unlike the vast majority of netflix/amazon/hulu exclusives these days.
