What a lot of people fail to realize, is that this was Marlo's demise. They never gave Marlo's group a closer look until Bodie was killed. Mcnulty wanted revenge so bad, he even made up a fake serial killer to use funds the city didn't have. Also, he used illegal wire taps. In a way, he risked his career for Bodie.

The worst part about Bodie's death is that nobody except McNulty and Poot really cared or remember him. He was a soldier his whole life. Never did no wrong, played the game straight and honest. Forgotten by his old organization after it fell apart, no respect, no promotions, gets capped in the back of the head and dies like any other. It's brutal. Shit is so sad because his own words ring true. Bodie really is old. The new breed that is Marlo and his people are cold and without honor. Bodie's from a time that has passed. A time where the game had rules and your name would ring out if you had heart. Now he just ends up a loser in a game that's rigged against the honest player, the soldier doing his duty. Brings you back to season two and the economic disparity surrounding the docks and the larger economy. "They used to make steel there, no?" One of the truest themes of The Wire is the demise of honest folk. The working class, so to speak. Whether you're in the game or on the job site, there's no room for the honest man with a heart in America anymore. Bodie's just another example. A man doesn't get ahead anymore, he just gets dead.

@CGoody564 6 жыл бұрын
Yo Chill he did make it across the board.. Snoop was coming at him diagonally (bishop), Chris was walking him straight down from the side (rook), and o-dog came around the alley and turned the corner (Knight)... It took three of the most valuable and powerful pieces to trap what was supposed to be a lowly pawn... He wasn't just a pawn anymore; he was a queen, the most powerful piece that still gets their hands dirty, and is extremely tough to defend or attack without your own queen, a significant numbers advantage when it comes to points/pieces left on your side the board, or a decimated pawn structure on your opponents side. The thing is, even with the strength of a queen, it needs support or else it will be overwhelmed by the opponents lesser valued but still powerful pieces; there aren't many situations where a queen can take out their high valued pieces without getting trapped or removed itself. Had Bodie had any support, he stood a good chance here. Sadly, he was too brave for his own good, whilst everybody else tried to save their own ass.

Ted87 It does both, but he's a wreck. He becomes hell bent on getting Marlo taken down because of his guilt over Bodie's death. His hate for authority grows to even greater heights too. Even Bunk tells him he's a wreck in S5. Bodie's death was the point where he stopped being "real police" and starting breaking the law himself to get things done
@laphonz
@laphonz 9 жыл бұрын
Likeicare usewe Sometimes laws have to be broken in order to achieve things. Not all laws are justifiable for a lot of instances. Laws were created for people to abide by so that society won't be chaotic but the problem is that the law can also be an enforcer of chaos. Laws have the potential of being an antagonist to peace. Laws and principles are capable of protecting criminals and allowing more crimes to take place. We know who were responsible for a lot of the occurred murders in West Baltimore (Avon). But the police need hard-to-get proof in order to initially lock him up. Why do our police enforcement need proof of A's crimes? Just lock him up due to recurrent association of being a drug lord, and then the problem will be solved. A rocket scientist don't need to be called in order to recognize the obvious.
@LanceVanceDance2012
@LanceVanceDance2012 9 жыл бұрын
Taylor Giavasis Laws are there to protect our civil liberties. In law the most fundamental principle is that you are innocent until proven guilty. You mess around with laws and they can be abused by those in power against its own people. You have to see the forest from the trees. You can take down Avon but the game don't change another person will take his spot. The whole point of the wire is that it shows you the forest from the trees. If you want to get deep into it, drug laws are created to control a segment of the population which is superfluous to economic production. That's also why the prison industrial complex is there. Laws are created to protect the wealthy from poor people. The wire shows you how the system is from not just the gangs, the courts, police force, media, politics. Its all maintaining the status quo, the system is designed to keep the drug war going. Removing gang leaders just changes the players, the game stays the same. Mcnulty cant see the forest from the trees, its like a game for him to catch the big guys. Avon is not the reason the drug war is happening, the system is causing it. Avon just filled a spot as ceo. when he goes there will be a need for another gang leader. its a perpetual cycle. You need systematic changes to end the war on drugs(war on a population) and actually take serious measures to help the poor communities find jobs. politicians are lazy, its easier to maintain the status quo. Easier to criminalize drugs, which pretty much is a war on that population as they dont have decent jobs so major motivator to do drugs. instead of solving the problem of poverty you can blame it on drugs, throw them into the prison industrial complex. the police get more jobs and funds to fight the 'war on drugs'. The guy who made the wire talked about it, very smart man.

This was the saddest scene to me. When Wallace died in S1, McNulty said "well, that opens up Stringer Bell" or something. He didn't care. It was all business. But in this scene it was clear: He cared about Bodie. It wasn't highlighted like the others, but I think that was one of the father-figure relationships of S4, like Namond and Colvin or Dukie and Prez. They didn't spend much time together, but McNulty and Bodie had a respect, and even friendship. You just don't really notice it until here.

Carver knew for a while before McNulty did. He might have processed his grief earlier. Plus, it's not a big question mark as to how these corner boys will turn out eventually -- dead or in prison. They know this; it's part of the job. McNulty's sadness and frustration lay in that he respected Bodie, understood him as a kindred spirit in terms of getting fucked by institutions and also had a real shot at flipping him in order to take down the Stanfield crew.

The thing is, the parallel is between Bodie and McNaulty. That's why McNaulty has so much sympathy for guys like Bodie and Omar, yet Carver doesn't. For Carver, these people are part of the game he plays. McNaulty is a soldier, one who does what he does so well that his own bosses have a love-hate relationship with him. McNaulty is to Daniels what Bodie was to Stringer. So when Bodie died, Carver just lost a good informant. He didn't see Bodie as being an actual person, though. Just a lost cause that he could hopefully make some inroads with. McNaulty knew, though, that Bodie was like him. And I think Bodie knew, too. Despite technically being on different sides of the war on drugs, Bodie and McNaulty had more in common than either had with their own people.

via wiki Of the seventeen front-line Barksdale Organization gang members featured in seasons one to three, twelve die during the course of the show and three more are imprisoned with long sentences. Poot in many ways is the "sole survivor," and the foil to the heavy casualties suffered particularly by Barksdale's organization. This is despite the fact that he survives being shot at three times, more times than any other character except Omar Little. He distinguishes himself from the other two remaining survivors, Slim Charles and Dennis "Cutty" Wise, as the only low-level player who is able to completely move away from drug trade after the organization's collapse.

This was the event that more or less directly caused McNulty to rejoin the MCU. It's true that he couldn't contain his curiosity when the bodies were laid out in the gym of Daniels' old school, and that he was going to turn Bodie into an informant to show Lester and Bunk he hadn't lost it, but it was only when Bodie died that he seriously considered leaving his easy life as a patrolman. He had been skeptical when Carcetti and Freamon had told him that it was going to be a new day, but only when Bodie dies does he dare to believe that it might be true. And I honestly believe that if it had been, he could have handled the MCU without all the anger getting the better of him.

I know this may sound odd, but I blame Stringer. Think about it: almost all of the deaths of the significant characters such as D'angelo and Wallace are all linked to Stringer. Plus, Stringer was making underhanded deals with Marlo while Avon didn't want anything to do with him. This gave Marlo more power, and he eventually took over Barksdale's crew. Bodie however was loyal to the Barksdale organization, so he never really cared for Marlo and vice versa. And he obvious was going to go out like a punk. It was just mass confusion all spawning from the business ventures of Russell Bell. But it's really cool how everything in this show ties together. Even the small things add up to something big.

The acting here is subtle but potent. You can see real pain in both their eyes when Carver breaks the news to McNulty. Powerful stuff. They both really cared about him but because he was a criminal they have to carry it with a straight face around their colleagues. This is paralleled in the next scene when Poot is standing on the corner totally emotionless despite having just lost his best friend. He too has to carry the pain with a straight face because Bodie had been labeled a snitch. Bodie had been "caught between the sides" as McNulty described it to Brianna regarding D'Angelo.

The Cops expect people to risk their lives snitching in order to get criminals off the street, the least McNulty can do is risk jail and his career to get Marlo off the street. Marlo a man he put in power in the first place by being so single-minded in going after Stringer Bell. When Body said people like Marlo had to fall, McNulty said that for that to happen someone's going to have a step up a little. McNulty stepped up, big time in season 5, IMHO. And finally for the right reasons!

Dude… The actor portraying Poot got me in this scene. That is as drained as you’ll ever be.

Hurt my heart to see Bodie cooperating with McNulty! I’m glad the writers wrote him off before he could tarnish his reputation!

I always wondered why the guy who played McNulty didn't get more roles, he was a great actor.

Poot actually told him the truth...and he knew it. You can see the painful expression on his face after what Poot said...that hit him hard.

I actually liked the respect McNulty low key had for Bodie. I truly believe McNulty never wanted Bodie to die.

I love the Wire. The fact we feel terrible about Bodie dying shows how good the writing is. After all, Bodie did murder Wallace; but that's all forgotten after we "join his side" and get angry with Marlo's crew. The show was brilliant.

He shot Wallace but Poot gave the finishing blow. You can even see in Bodie's face then he really didn't want to kill Wallace

Bodie’s death was the push mcnulty needed to demolish Marlo.

I loved this scene, there was a mutual respect for one another and for life here. McNulty was as real as a cop can be, he genuinely cared for Bodie. Poot understood that and respected the man in return, but there's a way for cops and dealers and Poot has always had a pretty good public front regarding "it is what is." Powerful scene indeed.

I genuinely consider Final Grades to be the best episode of television ever broadcast. Even above Ozymandias.

+1 Best episode of the best show in television history. Middle Ground is way up there as well,no doubt. I think The Hunt from season 1 rates super high as well.

Me too. Final Grades is a perfect episode, although not as ornate as Ozymandias. The last two episodes of season 4 I love. In fact the whole season 4 is my favorite season of all series

RazrHack Fuck Ozymandias and fuck Breaking Bad. The most overrated tv show in history and it doesn't hold a candle to The Wire or The Sopranos.
