Sergei did not want to make any deal with Marlo for several reasons. First, he liked Proposition Joe personally, as seen in Season 2, and he knew what would happen if he gave someone like Marlo a line to the Greeks. Second, he agreed with Proposition Joe's mindset, of treating it like business. As scary as the Greeks were, all of their decisions made logical sense from a business perspective. They didn't want a reputation or to be known at all, they considered that juvenile. Finally, Marlo called him Boris. lol.

The reason I think they started doing business with was that Marlo had found out about The Greeks he would not take no for an answer, as The old Greek said after Marlo left the restaurant, that he will keep coming back if they didnt take his money. However, often times ones reputation is enough. He has plenty of a reputation wholesaling packages the he distributes. If every single business connection, and potential,deal rested on there being a third party who knows everyone intimately, then most deals would never happen. I interpreted it as kind of sarcastic or like intentionally patronizing from Avon (seeing as Marlo killed so many of his people) but also seeing as in the earlier seasons Avon and Prop Joe represented West and East Baltimore, it was sort of a subliminal signal from Avon that he knew this was about more than just money to Marlo, it was about completely upending the power dynamic in the streets (by cutting out Prop Joe who was the only dealer the Greeks trusted and therefore ran the co-op) which was Marlo’s agenda more than merely making money.

In the case of Avon, Marlo, and Stringer, they either did or didn't play by the rules, maybe that's a better term then code. The reason Avon sold Stringer out was because of what Stringer originally did to try and set up Brother Mouzone by telling Omar Brother tortured his boy Brandon, and he essentially got what he had coming because he wasn't paying by the rules, and that he also sold Avon out to the cops to prevent a gang war. Then at the same time Avon gave up Stringer for what he did to Marlo and Mouzone, and I finally caught how the producers set it up in the last episode (or second to last) where they both are taking to each other, knowing that in their heads they both had something to hide, both being sold out. Marlo was straight up not playing by the rules at all, in which he would kill anyone, and i mean anyone, who got in his way, but he was smart so he got away with it for a while.

Charles) avon =old school, marlo had chris and snoop (and other trained soldiers) of which we could list - marlos campaign (as stated by david simon himself) was a "insurgent" campaign...take the corners by force, meanwhile while marlos crew had their shit in check, all in line, training soldiers keeping them fit, marlo kept his cards close to his chest, played it tight, avon and stringer had inner turmoil, issues - they didn't care about their underlings as much...and the streets in a sense became disconnected - I have a feeling even if Avon hadn't got busted due to stringer snitching out the safe house - you never know what could of happened - as Marlo said "mah...barksdale weak today...and they aint worth the ammunition im holding" well all your saying is "what if's" fact is avon didn't win, went to prison, stringer died, best muscle exited the game - and marlo took over (sure he didn't have the crown for long, few months/a year at best) but where as stringer chulked up and now maggot pie, and avon doing hard-time (lost his sister, his organization, probably only a average amount of money in his canton account) fact is marlo got out of the game (or that's the impression they give you) towards the end of the show - chris gets locked up for good just like wee-bey - life w/o parole marlo takes care of chris' "people" and marlo stays out of prison, and with ALL his money - marlo got what stringer always wanted to be out of the game "done with that gangsta stuff" w/ loads of money (which in turn he could do anything with) cause the feds/local law enforcement joint-task force WASNT going to go after marlos money, and material possessions - he got "1" window to jump out of, 1 chance to walk away scot-free due to the whole situation w/ Maurice levy/the ADA (and the prosecution) of marlos people...the case was dirty, fraudulent wire-taps etc, etc - case must of been dirty as hell as Maurice pointed out to whats her name ginger - the one mcnulty used to fuck..she becomes a judge at the end of the show..well marlo if anything had better luck then other ones, 28 bodies, kingpin of the west side, took over prop joes connect, won the war against avon and the entire barksdale organization, drops bodie and other subordinates and YET walks away scot free with a few million in profits (overseas accounts, etc, etc) shit...that doesn't (IF) ever happen reguardless if were talking fictional or non fictional so in marlo the tv characters fate I see him in another city maybe not playing it 100% straight but ALIVE and WELL OFF nonetheless hell that's the most you can ask for ...in that game, the dope game that never happens "no happy endings" to this shit...yet its the closest thing you can get...to be "out" w/ a steady stream of income and ability to live comfortably...avon was a good leader, but to me alittle bullheaded and didn't see the bigger picture at times, marlo was just young and ruthless stringer if anything had the copulation, smarts, and somewhat street wit about him...all mixed into a blender, but he was greedy and playing far too many games...that's what got him jammed up and ultimately got him dropped. happens to the best I suppose...but nobody really wins, but the closest thing to being successful and alive is marlo in the case of this show when it comes to the criminal element.

When Avon had Wee-Bey, Stinkum, and Bird he would have been in a much better position to take on Marlo & Co., and may have beaten them - interesting to ponder. Unfortunately, thanks mostly to Omar, that strength went away, and the quality of "muscle" that replaced them (Gerard & Sapper, for example) wasn't up to the task. Slim and Cutty in his prime, maybe, but Cutty didn't have it in him after 14 years in the slam. I would LOVE to have seen Brother Mouzone brought into the picture against Marlo, but that would have been a stretch on the part of the writers. Avon stayed in control, and in my opinion from what happens at the end, gets out and slides right back into power. This time with a lot more self control and wisdom about him, as all that ego "I want my corners" bullshit would've been under control by this time. The Baltimore drug game changed and went towards a more cooperative and professional organization that mirrored the classic, 5 families, commission, type way of running thing. Just like Prop Joe had fantasized and attempted to create before Marlo took him out. It's hinted that Slim Charles will be capo di tutti capi at the end, demonstrated by how he drops Cheese in front of all the other bosses without so much as a dirty look and Slim was always a Barksdale soldier so he'll keep the seat warm till Avon gets out. Sort of like a street boss. No doubt Avon has millions stashed for his release and his rep just continues to grow while he's away. Even though he "lost," he still "won," (both terms used lightly) and that is the beauty of this, and all great shows. There is no true good or bad, and most people and situations fall somewhere in the middle. What should happen rarely does, and life isn't fair but one thing is for certain, it keeps on going with or without you.

Flashed a sign and smiled. All the while, played him like a fiddle. Avon was the man. Both times he got pinched, was due to Stringer. Season 1 when Stringer okayed the hit on Orlando. If they didn't try to kill him, Kima wouldn't get shot and the cops wouldn't have come down so hard and fast on him. Plus he would have a tight hold on the crews, with Wee Bay's team keeping them in line. Season 3, Stringer outright gave him up to the cops. Prop Joe was behind it, and Avon knew that. This deal would help take care of two very problematic people for him when he came out. Prop Joe would be still be reigning, while Marlo would be battling Avon. He used Marlo to get rid of Prop Joe, and just let Marlo bring about his own downfall, as predicted.

Incorrect on both counts. Avon got caught because the cops drilled a camera hole into the nightclub and caught Avon telling D to go up to NYC and pick up the shipment. Stringer had nothing to do with that string of events, which was started by wee-bey having the party where the stripper died, causing the other stripper to flip to the cops when they came to her. On the 2nd time he got picked up, Stringer gave up Avon because it was that or get kicked out of the co-op, but he did it after finding out that the cop running Hamsterdam (Colvin) was telling the crew chiefs to give up the guy who shot someone in Hamsterdam or it would get shut down. He started doing small snitches directly to Colvin on Avon until Stringer knew he could get Avon in a big situation that would definitely violate his parole and get him sent back. Nothing to do with Prop Joe.

For me this whole scene serves to underline Avon's abiding power even in Jessup. Marlo, unsophisticated as he is, thinks he can gain access to Sergey simply through throwing cash at him. However, as his later interactions with the Greeks prove networks of power are far more complicated. The Greek turns down Marlo's money via Vondas as he didn't trust Marlo enough to do business with him. Here Sergey turns down Marlo's money as 'he didn't need fucking canteen' in the 'soft' US prison. This said, he did need Avon's continued patronage as you can tell when Sergey turns to him after plainly been underwhelmed and unthreatened by Marlo.

agreed. Jail is not the end of your career of crime. It is actually where you can make/earn the biggest name for yourself to set you up for when you get out. Look at Sergei's face when Marlo mentions how Vondas would like the money. Sergei wants to tell Marlo to go fuck his black ass (you know russians are racist as fuck, especially these.), but then internally he's like, "Damn, the greeks do need distribution and with avon in here and prop joe dead, this would be good for them and ultimately me. Fuck. fine."

Trilce Joe wasn't dead yet. Marlo killed him after he secured the connect. Sergei sealed Prop Joe's fate by passing him on to the Greeks

At the end, you can see it in Sergei’s face he knows exactly what will happen to Joe if he gives Marlo a line to the Greeks and contemplated giving it up. But in the end, he has no choice but to charge it to the game and put business first.

nah. I do believe Sergei likes joe, but it's about business. He just finished telling this dude to go fuck himself. But marlo cuts straight through to business, and then Sergei realizes, "fuck! Now i have to interact with this foo." Remember not a lot of people know about "the greeks." Also being valuable in the crime world isn't just about being muscle and keeping your mouth shut. you also have to bring in money. Sergei is all three: a merciless killer, tough enough to do his time without ratting, and takes care of/brings in money. It is the same thing that makes Weebay and Chris valuable.

In the scene where Nick and Ziggy meet with the Greeks you can hear Sergei and his mate talking about 'Bullwinkle'. I think he was being told that the name comes from the cartoon Rocky and Bullwinkle.

I have looked through some of the top comments here and most of the guys dont get one thing: if Boris had rejected Marlo's proposition, Avan would make his life in prison unbearable, until Boris would break. That is the only reason Marlo called Avon's name, he made a point: "either my canteen money or punishment from Avan". And stop bulshiting yourselves and others with nonsence like "Sergei liked Joe", "the Greeks liked Joe" etc

Another circle closer, in a humorous vein: Marlo jumps on the bandwagon of referring to Sergei as "Boris," i.e., "S'up, Boris?" Recall that Ziggy started it with his idiotic Boris and Natasha thing in the café, then Nick, then in the interrogation room with McNulty and Fitzhugh in which Sergei says, "Boris, why always 'Boris'?" - it would have been funny if he had repeated that line in this scene, but that might have been a little too obvious and the writers refrained from including it.

avon is a fuckin boss dude i already said that he is the boss of all bosses but peep how much of a boss he is - he uses westside as an excuse to keep marlo happy, marlo gets what he wants and prop joe is eliminated by marlo, marlo later loses everything whilst slim charles got the connect, and we all know slim charles never stopped being that barksdale crew. - sergei truly loved prop joe and really did not want to give the connect tomarlo, but again the king orders so he obeys. avon is the absolute boss dude
