JM Boswell is one of the kindest and most wonderful gentleman I have met. I loved his shop, pipes and tobacco's. I was visiting with my family and he made it a family event. He was so generous that my wife who was sitting outside came in to see what we where up to and JM looked at her and handed her a jar of honey saying you need to get something too! His friendly and kindness is so refreshing,

I’ve never had the pleasure of visiting with Mr. Boswell, but I have experienced the hospitality of some fine folks in Pennsyltucky. You’d never suspect you were north of the Mason-Dixon. Thank you for the video.

I have been to two talks that John Cleese has hosted in the UK and he is an incredibly intelligent and insightful man. One talk was about his life in comedy / history and the other was at the Royal Geographical Society about the Media.

I am traveling through Alexandria from Tennessee at the end of May. I deliberately planned my route and schedule to spend a good time at the Alexandria Boswell store. A good way to begin a vacation. I think one of the most important things I learned from a very successful person was, “Having integrity means doing the right thing even when no one is watching.”

That was good. Thanks for sharing. Love John Cleese! Sounds like he has more wisdom and faith than I realized.

Great information. I had no idea Mr. Boswell was from good ole Alabama. I feel honored now. I think you were spot on with everything. There’s definitely something special about good quality craftsmanship even if it costs a little more. I think you can do anything you set your mind to and work hard. Hopefully we can meet soon. God bless ya.

Great channel, I have just started smoking a pipe at the tender age of 65, I did try back in the 1980s as a way of giving up cigarettes, but I obviously didn't give it enough time, or get the brand new pipe broken in, I purchased a 2nd hand French Briar, billiard type, straight stem, last week, and stupidly an Aromatic Cherry and Vanilla, probably not the best choice for a novice, but as folk say "Some times you have to jump in at the deep end", I'll plump for something a little easier to smoke next time. A funny thing about my fellow Englander John Cleese, is that his name was a spelling error on an advert for one of his first shows, his real surname is Cheese.

I only have one of their pipes but it’s a good one. Great storytelling as always! I wanted to remind you that Pipe Week is coming up. It is always the week after Father’s Day. This year that falls on June 16-22. This will be the 4th year in a row that we have pipe week with the awards show at the end. As you know, you have been one of the nominees on previous years. The main purpose is to put the Pipe Hobby back on the world map with yearly celebrations. It would help a lot if you show your support by mentioning it to your viewers for increased exposure and participation. Thanks for all you do for the pipe hobby and good luck with your new blend.

Watched and listened to this today in Vienna, Austria. The wife and I have attended daily Masses at St. Stephen's Cathedral and St. Peter's church. Today we watched the Lippizaner stallions put through their exercises at the Spanish Riding School. And yesterday, I bought my first meerschaum pipe, a Viennese Strambach bent stem billiard, and got my first taste of 965 from the Mohilla tobacco shop. Long-time fan of John Cleese, too. Our culture needs to rekindle the spirit of funny.

That was most enjoyable Dr Harrelson Thank you. Mr Boswell is obviously a Gentleman who not only understands his Business and his customers but also cares about them very much and that has got to go somewhere to being successful in your chosen profession. As an Englishman I grew up watching John Cleese on Tv. The Man is a genius and has talents that go far beyond his acting, as we have just found out. Apart from his Films, such as the Monty Python series, he also did a very successful Tv series called '' Fawlty Towers '' Which also starred his Wife and is about the Running of a dysfunctional Hotel and is definitely worth a watch.

Great discussion Alan, and while I don’t know, John Cleese, I do know JM Boswell , and you could not have picked a finer businessman and remarkable gentleman as he, to center your comments. You captured JM well and he is everything that you said, exactly so, and so much more. I hope someday someone convinces him to allow them to write his biography, maybe you, Alan. His stories are absolutely amazing and so captivating. Nobody could make this stuff up. I ii am fortunate to live one traffic light and 20 short miles from JM Boswell ‘s shop in Alexandria, I was with him this afternoon.

Great video and chat. I did not know that John Cleese was such a philosopher so to speak. I have listened to audiobook of C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape letters, and Mr. Cleese does a wonderful job…. So easy to listen to and enjoy. I’ve always heard that he was an atheist , but I don’t know for sure. It sounds like he has a better grasp on things than most people.

Great video :) Please keep these kinds of videos coming - more about pipe/southern/traditional culture and experience. One idea I have about a successful person is this: taking "pride" has to be tied not to "pride" itself, but rather to "self-esteem". Pride is what others think/say about you. Self esteem is what you think about yourself. People who excel at anything for their own "self-esteem" are working on a much more solid basis than people who are working for "pride" (what people may or may not say about them). Self-esteem is an independent motivation. Pride is dependent on the approval of others - often people who are not that invested in your work. I like it when someone does a great job whether others say so or not, or even whether others know about their efforts or not. I also think this is a pre-requisite for true greatness in your field of effort.

A little late for a comment like this but I have just found your video with dry creek wrangler. It made me think of something I have done for the better part of 2 years. I call it a coke day, as in coca-cola. It was a day where I was proud of what I did and at the end of it I would go outside and sit out on my porch and I would crack open a glass coke bottle( it reminded me of an older time). I would take this time to sit and relax and think. No screens, no extra noise, no earbuds. Just some quiet time to sit and think. What you said in the video made me realize that pipe smoking may just be for me, when I come of age. I have been ostracized in my generation for the way I act. I prefer to be calm, literate and contemplative. These traits are not what are valued in today’s society, evident by the abhorrent sound they call rap. It deeply saddens that the music I enjoy such as Jim Croce and bob Dylan, is seen as inferior. Thank you for all your wisdom in your videos. I only hope I may be wise enough to continue to learn from such a man as yourself. In case you were curious I am in high school as a junior (this fact seems to surprise many people, though I just think that speaks to society’s change in values rather than my own maturity).

John Cleese is a top notch classical comedian. His comedy , as was seen on Monty Python years ago, is very deep and thought provoking. His comedy troop was amazing at making the simple or mundane hilarious . Once you get on their wave length it opened up so much thinking . By my definition, success requires: Understanding that perfection is not obtainable, while always striving to achieve it. Understanding that you’ll never know everything about anything, while always continuing to learn as much as possible. Being decisive and bold enough to take risks, while accepting that failure is always a possible outcome. Being generous with praise but cautious with criticism to others, while being cautious with praise and generous with criticism to yourself.

While I agree about forgetting his name, I don't agree that any man is good, which you implied inversely by saying Osteen was not good. I agree with Jesus, the Messiah, who said no man is good, ONLY THE FATHER. And of the best of the best of man born of women, John the Baptiser was it.
