@ Nah, the lighting sucks. See the candle on the table, looks worse than Witcher 1. The only thing "better" or I would say with different atmosphere are the shaders and colors as whole. If you want this, there are plenty of mods, it would surely be interesting to play with such a different feel.

Looking back at this the game was heavily stylized with a sharpening filtering and crushing color like The Witcher 2. Some things looked better like the water affects, vegetation and some parts had more geometry detail but the lighting and skin shader is better in the final release. The final game looks more natural and realistic even though it does not have as much details in some parts.

It is a fact that the actual assets themselves on release aren't any worse. What people fail to grip is a) these are rendered in 4k, b) the colours have been MASSIVELY altered after to look more cinematic, c) lots of sharpening has been added to make the textures pop more, d) the camera angles have been decoupled in the comfort of non-real time to show the nicest possible angles.

Yeah, they drew me in and made me think this would look uber, but I'm sure they used the assets they gained by scaling back the detail and fidelity to create a larger world. I'll eventually buy this game, but I'm going to build a new PC first and since I'm really only playing Bloodborne and some digital titles at the moment, I'm in no rush.

But I think the game was downgraded a lot, textures were lower res, animations cut out, lighting became flatter, colour palette was changed, draw distances were butchered, grass became a cardboard mess, vegetation density was reduced, npc density was reduced, the ocean waves were flatter, volumetric fog was removed, volumetric clouds were removed, volumetric smoke was removed, roach didn't leave dust particles during a gallop, alpha particles were drawn back etc. This was most likely because the consoles at the time were not powerful enough to produce this kind of visual quality. The only thing better is the character models.

I liked this art style so much more than what we got in the end. Darker theme is troughout present from books to games and feelt much more true to the genre
