While doing live streams on Twitch, The Witcher Games were one of the most common ones we played together. So when making the first KZbin video, there was simply no other topic I wanted to talk about. It was pretty obvious this was going to happen, right?
So what did the Witcher Games got it wrong when basing upon the book?

That is awesome! At 38, I had found the Witcher world (cue TW3 game) and then I found out about the books, love both of them! Geralt isn't ugly in the books. He has pale face, unpleasant voice, wears a leather headband, and has a masculine body. If he would be ugly I don't think the sorceresses would thirst for him. And i think the look for small ciri is pretty much accurate cuz she was a little ugly.
@sarquin2549

He IS ugly in the books, it's the result of the Trials of Grass, of which Geralt received most of all known witchers, due to how well his body endured the standard dose. The side effect of this extra dose was that his face got quite fucked up. And the explaination of why despite that women liked him in the witcher world, is the same of why women fell for guys like these in the real world - they're not as much for the pretty face, like men are when choosing a woman. As for Geralt, it was mentioned that it was more something in the way how he walks, how he moves, some charisma, etc

Tbh i always found that ihuaraqaqax healing them and them getting married was just her lying to Galahad. Especially since she said it with tears in her eyes. When she described the spirits of all of geralts dead friends coming to push their boat out onto the lake there were some noteable ommissions (like Cahir) that are strange unless you take into account that Ciri is making this up. More over: the epilogue of seasons of storms features an ILLUSION of Geralt, placed there by the werefox as a thank you for helping her save her child
@jonathan13co
@jonathan13co 7 ай бұрын
Apologises for the late reply but the books actually made it very clear it was the opposite, lol. Geralt was dead. Yenn exhausted herself to death. It's written black on white. That entire scene of them being put on the boat and ciri taking them away is too surreal and symbolic to indicate anything else. There's this repeating motive in the lady of the lake which says "something ends, something begins..." This was geralt's end, and ciri's beginning. The entire epilogue is her looking forward to going on a fresh start, in a new world. And regarding seasons of storms... Cmon. She was clearly hallucinating seeing geralt. Her visions were completely random and didn't make much sense - like, geralt wouldn't save her and then just leave her fainting like that, you know? It's been a while since I read it, but I think it was also implied something was causing those delusiosn in the forest. Add the fact that it occured 100 years AFTER the events of the lady of the lake, and you'd see sapkowski was just teasing the gullible and giving the devote readers a proper farewell from geralt..

There are several errors to address. The beard is a game mechanic. If you want to keep Geralt true to the books, you have to visit a barber regularly…however the player can choose otherwise. Yeah, they make him more handsome in the later games…pretty ugly in the first, but keep in mind several sorceresses wanted to bang him senseless (and a few did). So, he must have been more attractive than we suppose…or they were really into guys with scars. To me, my only issue with signs is that in the books, Geralt needed potions to “power up” for using them. In one battle, he used aard and was surprised that it worked because he hadn’t imbibed a potion to bolster his ability to use magic signs. This could have been incorporated into the game, but they just used a stamina bar. As far as death is concerned, nobody is “dead” until there is cellular death. Ciri arrives shortly after Geralt and Yennifer “die” and takes their bodies away. As I recall, there is no confirmation of final death. The games use this ambiguity to retcon that she brought them to a place that rejuvenated them and healed their wounds.
@ActuallyRenard

Yeah the looks is something I got a new found clarity to it, after re-reading the books this year. It is really just his self-loathing. But the beard isn't JUST about the game mechanic in itself. The Witcher 3 was heavily marketed with him having one.

I mean, after the big rockus of A Time of Contempt, first thing Geralt says to Dandelion is ''Bring me a razor, I want to get rid of this damn beard''. It's clear enough for me. Book Geralt has a lot of emotional dicotomies, has existential problems, he's a man who years to find reason, in his life. He's also more menacing, can be extremely violent and much more threatening both the games and the show portrays. There are sequences in the books where Ciri, Dandelion, even Philippa Eilhart is terrified of him because of how vicious he can be if he just unleashes himself. To me, book Geralt looks too hideous for a visual adaptation to cope. When Dudu transforms into his form, first thing Geralt thinks ''What a hideous look I have, what a hideous smile I have'' But I don't think he's this extremely ugly, unbearable sort of a man either. He's just, freakish, very uncomely to the eye but he's someone who can attract women a lot too. Also, I don't get the skinny description. He's usually described as tall, lithe, not too muscular but a bit bulky, extremely quick sort of a guy.

What about when Geralt and Yennefer are in the banquet in Thanedd Island? I'm pretty sure some of the other sorceresses described Geralt as handsome. Maybe they did that just to tease Yen, I dunno. Even though they're bound by fate through their encounter with the djinn (so maybe it's not "true love"), I love the idea of two rogues following their own moral codes who somehow make it work despite all odds. Yen is constantly defying and upsetting people and the Lodge of Sorceresses, Geralt is in a constant struggle with what it means to be a witcher, and I just love their badass energy together. Not to mention their mom/dad nature in raising Ciri. If I were Ciri and Geralt ended up with Triss, I'd feel betrayed like he married his step-daughter.

It does say in the books that Geralt and Yennefer died at the end of the main story. however at the end of 'season of storms,' which is a prequel to the main story, there is a character in the future (who was often mentioned during the series referring back to Geralt's adventure as history) that is saved by Geralt and she was shocked because Geralt had died. It suggests that somehow Geralt came back to life but didn't elaborate as to how and whether or not Yennefer also came back to life. I think Sapkowski put that in the book as a means of letting fans use their imagination on the matter as well as give the games as well as any film series the ability to add to the story without it going against the lore. Netflix ignored that however and said screw it, lets just steal the story you wrote but ignore the lore in the books and change things in a manner that makes no sense.

One note, Geralt isn't ugly, he is different looking , ill looking , he has a tendency to use this features to push people away as they push him away but he isn't ugly. The term ugly thrown at him is usually used by people who dispise to hate him, and the term most commonly used is to describe the way he smiles - which is something as noted in the books is something he does on purpuse just like how he likes to be blunt or aggressive in his chatter. That being said he isn't bearded and he isn't as good looking as Game 3 portrayed him, some pretifying of characters as long as it doesn't ruin the core aspects / struggles of the characters is something completely understandable.

Sorry bro, but you completely failed to get the real differences between the books and games. It's his personality. In the books you have a captivating combination of a bad-ass sarcastic outsider and talkative (often self-pitying) philosopher. Either way he enjoys a good company and has many friends despite his problematic social status. And at times he is stubborn and dumb.. This of course cannot be fully captured in the game - where you need to give a floor to the player instead and can't go much deep without having a ridiculous amount of conversations. This is understandable, but as a result Geralt in the games looks emptier and less talkative then in the books. Plus it is a nonsense that Geralt in the books is ugly. Where do you have it from? It is made perfectly clear there that he is in fact very attractive for the females.

I'm quite sure the fall damage in games may be connected to Geralt's knee injury that haunted him later in the books :P And Geralt isn't necessarily dead in the books, it's unclear "make of that what you will" open to interpretation kind of thing. As for the wedding, remember the time and dimension powers Ciri have, she could have transported them into that scenerio, but iirc she can't control ghosts of dead people? And I don't understand your final argument, Geralt literally says **Almost** died, and you take that for "See? Even games confirm Geralt 100% died", while the game clearly states that he didn't.

i'm not a 100% sure on this one, but i think "ugly" comes from a few factors, 1st one is a translation error. (though i'm not sure about that one), the other is more of his complexion, he is pale, has scars, a not very nice smile, and large dark eyes. This description always makes me think of him as a bit "undead-ish" looking, though also he has no bussiness looking that muscular, he should be thin, i think the witcher 1 geralt and the Michal Zebrowski version are the best examples. In my mind he has not good looking (not ugly per se either) but has a certain charm, but also looking a bit scary aswell by normal human standards. Like imagine if you are walking on the street, and see a guy who is pale as a fuckin wall, white hair, and large all black eyes. yeah he can be handsome, (face shape etc.) but it will be kinda scary like he is possessed or something lol

I have always felt like the Witcher games are a fabricated reality created by Ciri, because Geralt is good looking unlike the books, there are plenty of monster contracts, and Geralt is an OP Witcher god, unlike the books, also *spoilers* if you don't act a certain way with Ciri she abandons them by going to face the white frost. They hint that it's a death but she just creates a new universe e.g. new game plus.

Games were really well written and even though its not the EXACT same canon it still could be. I think geralt was way more emotionally immature in the books though. Lots of sulking for no reason other than ego. (Baptism of fire. Im thinking of Baptism of fire.) Also, i think that geralt was less ugly and more horrifying to look at. Like people got freaked out just by his presence, without really seeing his face. Also ill never forget how him smiling was one time described as "a massive scar blooming across his face". He was terrifying.

He’s not ugly in the books. He just makes ugly faces ‘cause he’s usually being intimidating, and, or, annoyed by people and the situations he finds himself in. In the first book, “The Last Wish”, Yennefer mentions his ‘good looks’, and tells him, ‘not to pull that face’. In several instances in the books, women seem to be attracted to him almost immediately.

Excellent video partner. First video of yours that I see and I would like to add a humble suggestion - full of audacity and selfishness - on my part, which I dare say will bring benefits to your channel now that we are heading to the second season of the netflix series and therefore The Witcher will be on the rise, and also serving as a type of content that I would consume (and I dare say many others as well). The suggestion would be for you to make this same type of video, only longer, covering more characters, events, lore (like the signs you showed in the video, swords, details about the witchers like the height Geralt fell you told in the video, their eyes, personality as well as abilities, age that is not well defined, etc) and the accuracy of their counterparts in games or even in the series. Well, forgive the audacity and possible selfishness in my suggestion, but it is content that I would be delighted to see.

Ok since you insist - Why meteorite steel? If it is only for killing people, why not ordinary steel, such a meteorite must be expensive - Who and where forged these swords, from where they had silver for their sword? - Where did the witchers learn about monsters, how they behave, what weaknesses they had, interrogated them before killing them? - Did magic have something to do with genes, or did the children of the magician / sorceress inherit abilities? Does it have anything to do with the inability of witchers and magicians to have children? - Why magicians / sorceresses "looked and took" people with magical abilities? What happened to the gifted if they were not trained in magic? That's it for now. I can get more questions if you want. :D

Geralt was never ugly though, there’s no line from the books to justify Geralt’s ugly appearance. In fact in the Books women found him quite handsome, I mean Geralt is literally self loathing and sees himself as the world does. He is insecure and has mommy issues. Geralt under the facade is a very emotional individual. The books describe his features yes. But never did it state he was ugly. He who is Geralt sees himself as Ugly Those who read the books and believe him to be ugly have poor comprehension or didn’t pay attention to when they read the books; Witcher 3 Geralt at least his face is how I pictured him; Witcher 1 and 2 Geralt is far from how Geralt looks, and is more like the perception of how he sees himself. Witcher 3 Geralt’s face combined with Witcher 1/2 Geralt’s physique is book Geralt. He’s no pretty boy, but he is very handsome. That pic bro, that you said looks more like Geralt is far from what I’ve read. I even read the last wish and all the other Witcher books to find what you are stating is fact; saying Geralt is Ugly is like Saying Legolas in the books has silver hair; when he doesn’t Legolas is supposed to have brown hair and that’s very important because the Kindred of Elves who do possess Silver Hair were not present in the time of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Witcher 3 Geralt is closer to book Geralt except for his body type. That’s literally all that is missing; in all truth.
@ActuallyRenard
@ActuallyRenard 3 жыл бұрын
As I do understand what you perceived, I still think he's ugly compared to what they portray him in the last game. I personally always saw him as the way he looked on the first game as canon, but it is a book, so really at the end of the day, it's how we see it ourselves. Having read the Russian translation now I do lean towards less of an ugly in looks to more of self loathing but in the end, I won't ever imagine Geralt from the books looking like his representation in TW3 or the Netflix adaptation.

The books are quite mid. Sapkowski is not a good author, really. The games catapulted The Witcher to international success. Sapkowski has always been bitter over the fact that he signed a contract when giving licensing rights to CDPR (which makes the games canon) and chose a lump sum because he didn't think that the games would be successful. He then threw a hissy fit like a child and began smearing CDPR. CDPR put him on the map and made better stories with that material. I will say that i wish that CDPR had stuck more to the mechanics from TW1 like alchemy, while keeping the combat more TW2, but replacing the rolls with pirouettes. Fortunately for those of us on PC, we have mods that correct these errors like W3EE and SCAAR. The biggest disappointment about TW3 was how great it looked in 2014. The lighting, textures, HUD, etc.. and it is sad that it can never be recreated no matter how many mods.

Damn. That's a huge spoiler. I forgot that I read it on Reddit years ago after finishing the main game. I only played the third and watched recaps of the first two, while having never read the books. Appreciate this information. I'm enjoying the Netflix tv series, but I'm a little frustrated at how unclear or lacking in depth the bonding of characters occurs. The chemistry of some relationships doesn't feel concrete and unfull, as if it's rushed and skipped years or months of bonding ...even though 16+ hours each of 2 seasons, with 5 more coming and movies seem like it could cover 7 books and several short stories fairly well.

The book description is just exagerating his features to show hes a battlescarred mutant. Not only that, but hes a mutated mutant. Hes not just unique among men, hes unique among witchers. Above all, i think what the author was going for is that if you had no notion witchers existed (which in a world like the witchers, a fair amount of peasants would have no clue) if one barged through your door and looked right at you... itd be the most terrifying person youd ever seen. Not ugly, just something is clearly wrong. Clearly his humanity was robbed from him, and hes something else. Clearly it isnt a race thing, nor an evolution thing. Clearly something horrid happened to him. If geralt was ugly, sorceresses especially would be uninterested. Afterall, they literally reform their own bodies to make themselves gorgeous. Why would they want to love someone who became ugly when they reformed their body with mutageons rather than spells? They wouldnt. Theyd detest witchers. Geralt's description in the books is just meant to make you feel that first impression. Once you are familiar with witchers and been around him enough, youd only be weirded out by his eyes.

But yeah, he isn't supposed to be a sex symbol, but at the same time, he does have his fair share of lady encounters, if you know what I mean. Mostly re-reading it I feel like it's just a lot of self-loathing from Geralt towards himself on the books. Also the Netflix is based on the books, but it looks like they also took liberties of their own.
