Although i wasn't a huge follower of The Witcher series, the main menu for The Witcher really resonated with me for some reason. I love it and the nostalgic feelings it brings. This is probably one of the best main menu's I've encountered in a game (IMO, of course)
Seeing that there wasn't any real HD quality footage on KZbin of the menu, i figured I'd upload my own.
This is a direct recording, unedited, in 1080p.

The atmosphere in the W2 is dark and gritty; the W3's is epic and grand. But none of them quite captures the essence of the Witcher like the first game's. It has that melancholy and ominous feeling that's best described as walking through a suspiciously deserted village in the early morning on a cold winter day.

exactly, the first game was the closest thing to the books we'll ever see
@TrollDragomir
@TrollDragomir 3 жыл бұрын
Later games tried too hard to be pretty, with lush environments and saturated colours, especially the second one, coming off at times almost looking like Fable. The first one, though made already in the age of no darkm gritty games (save for a few exceptions like Dark Souls), is still a relict of times where creators weren't afraid to make their environments really dirty, raw and grim. It's the same if you compare Diablo 2's athmosphere with Diablo 3. For so long people were complaining that games "have no colour" and "are just grey and brown", but I think a reasonable balance needs to be struck to get full spectrum of athmospheres and themes. I haven't seen a grey mist with dark, leafless trees in a game for years.

For me it has to do with the sense of scale. Due to the fact that the maps in Witcher 1 are separated the world feels much bigger. If you look at the world map the distance from Vizima to the south of the lake is about the same as Novigrad to Oxenfurt in W3, but because the lake map in W1 was build in the way that you don't see Vizima on the opposite shore make the world feel massive. +Juozapas Špokas How is Elder Scrolls a role-playing game? You don't have any real RPG elements there. There's open world, inventory, and a basic skill system, but loads of game has those things now. Games like GTA, Assassin's Creed or Mad Max have those elements, and no sane person would call those games RPGs. But the minute someone puts swords and dragons to the mix, it suddenly is the RPG of the year. Role Playing Game needs a good story, well written characters and freedom. And not freedom to move around the map, but to affect the world, the story and other characters in real and meaningful way. Witcher has those things. TES doesn't. Player character in Skyrim has shit to say and has no real personality. This is not acceptable in a real RPG game.

Feel like something of a veteran, having played all three games as they came out. Though I haven't played much of 3 yet (in the middle of exams, finishing next week thank God) I feel like 1 has a magic that the other two just can't live up to. It's difficult to articulate, but there was just this darkness, this griminess....this sense of suffering everywhere. 2 was...meh. Very linear, short and I felt the story was too complicated to really get into. Like they'd mention someone's name once and expect you to know who they were talking about a whole act later. 3 is good so far! Gameplay and graphics wise, I can't complain. The world certainly feels big and populated. My only complaint is how light the nights are. I've had daylight sometimes at about 3am. Don't know if that's a glitch, but...kinda weird. Whatever the case, I think we all have a special place in our hearts for 1...

+MadnesS8705 I know exactly what you mean. Third game is an example of a masterpiece and it's so good but when compared to 1 it lacks one thing, the drive. When I was playing the game, the journey of witcher 1 felt a lot more impactful and imprinting on my senses. I felt geralt's lines and actions in cutscenes were a lot more daunting and satisfying than that of 3's. On top of that, having to work quite hard to progress through the story by running around a lot, crossing out suspects and reading journals made me feel that I was involved in Geralt's journey on a more personal level. 3 has its share of awesomeness but the hand-holding witcher sense that produced the same old analysis made the experience more compulsory than motivating. Turning off witcher sense doesn't help as some tracks become nigh impossible to find like a needle in a haystack. Being sandbox could have diluted our motivation to move forward as well. I wouldn't hesitate to say that witcher 3 is a better game than 1 but after all this time I still like 1 more. 2...is...is...let's just forget about it.

I have heard this music yeas ago, but I couldn't remember where. The memory of it kept coming back to me from time to time and I wouldn't know what was that. The satisfaction when I finally found out it was the Witcher 1 intro music - can't even describe it! Absolutely love it!

Part of me wishes that Geralt had said "I know." in response, but I suppose it would have been superfluous. We all knew Geralt well enough by that point to know he was thinking it.

The first game captures that dark, gritty and melancholic feeling of the books perfectly. When I first played this game after already playing Witcher 3 and 2 I thought it would be a crappy outdated old game but I couldn't be more wrong. I got hooked by the story and the atmosphere and it was a blast.

Well, I am a huge follower, fan, supporter of the series and quite addicted to it. I love this song since 8 years back when I first played The Witcher for the first time. It is not in the OST somehow. But I listen to it whenever I start a new TW1 playthrough, followed by TW2 and TW3 too... awesome trilogy, born from awesome books too.

I'm telling y'all that the TW1 remake will certainly not have the same "dark Slavic countryside fantasy" atmosphere that the original game has. I fear they will turn this amazing and unique game into a generic fantasy slop game. Remember the remake is not even done by CDPR themselves and CDPR is not the company that it once was. And now that CDPR cares about that dystopian ESG score crap we can expect a lot of woke elements in the remake. Just like they said, it will be for the "modern audience". I don't wanna sound too pessimistic but after everything I have seen in the gaming industry I am preparing for the worst.

Can someone kindly tell me who is the original composer of this theme? I ask this because a variation of this theme is used as the "Geralt Of Rivia" Main Menu theme in Witcher 3. But if I know correctly, Marcin Przybyłowicz (the composer/music director of W3) did not work on Witcher 1, right?

@GTXMAN Indeed. The intro/Main Menu accurately portrayed the overall tone of the game in my opinion. The atmosphere is one i really quite like. The menu background, which basically looks like an animated watercolor painting - really is unique and i don't have any memory of encountering such a thing in a game before. I love it, and it works very well, simple yet very effective. The scenery/weather reminds me of Wales (UK) during the autumn months (now, basically). Great stuff.
