Voreena is a bruxa - a type of a vampire. Nivellen was cursed by the priestess and the curse itself included words "love" and "blood". The curse was lifted, because he spilled the blood of someone he loved. This also implies that the love between the two was actually true love (even though at first glance it may seem that Nivellen is desperate for any company and Voreena just found a convenient victim). That's why he still wants to die at the end.

I can also confirm it. In fact, Season 2 exceeded my expectations to such an extent that I think I'm in shock. People who're angry because it didn't mirror the source material closely enough seem to have comically little comprehension (or care) with respect to the concept that is an adaptation. Vereena is a creature called a 'Bruxa', a type of lesser vampire. So far as I can tell, the name Bruxa was dreamt up by Andrej Sapkowski by modifying the Portuguese term 'Brujha', meaning witch. In the Witcher universe, vampires aren't Undead humans but a totally separate species of monster that came to the Continent in an event known as the Conjunction of the Spheres. Certain types of vampire, like Bruxa's and the related Alps, can assume a humanoid appearance, in the case of both those species looking like young women, though there are other breeds of lesser vampire, like Fleders and Gharkains, that are monstrous in both appearance and behaviour at all times, usually having chiropteran attributes. There are also Higher Vampires, that are far more powerful than their lesser kin, but also tend to have both a far greater facility for appearing entirely human if they wish, along with a greater capacity for human virtues like compassion. if the series follows the books going forward, we should meet a Higher Vampire character at some point that is called Regis, though I can say no more than that for fear of spoilers.

Bruxae are a class of vampire. If you compared them to primates, they're the vampire equivalent of a bonobo chimpanzee where true high Vampires are to humans. Vampires are a genus of blood sucking shapeshifters whose natural form is of a large bat-like creature. All the different types of monsters (including humans, who presumably came from Earth) came from different worlds 1500 years ago during the Convergence. Bruxa is a type of a vampire. She's powerfull, but it's not the most powerfull type of a vampire. My only complaint about Vereena is that she speaks to much. Her species should not be that talkative. We'll have another, more powerfull one in the series and he'll speak for all of them. Vereena should be more mysterious, even Geralt doesn't know what she is in the beggining. Also Roach is a lady. Stubborn, sometimes a meanie, but a proper lady.

the problem with season 1 simply was that they based the whole season on the short stories which take place before the actual saga. for the show they tried to put those stories into a coherent framework and connect them more closely.. this season we are more where the actual book saga takes place - but they take some liberties telling the story, at the end of the day it is an adaptation (cant wait for the angry book readers to show up) - and the rest of the ride should be a lot smoother.. as you will probably be able to tell once you are done with season 2 p.s. roach is not a "boy".. roach is a "girl" - geralt prefers mares

They made some big ass changes there. My only problem with this show is that although Freya Alan is good as Ciri. She isn't good as kid Ciri. At this point in the story Ciri is like 8. That's the main issue - too many scenes with incredibly boring dialogue interspersed with monsters here and there that just feel like they're put in there. And no, I haven't read the books - so i'm only comparing to season 1.
