No one can write creepy children books, than Roal Dahl. He is a Master
@Arxane2 жыл бұрын
I grew up with the original book by Roald Dahl, who notoriously hated the movie’s change to the ending so much he stood outside movie theaters with a megaphone telling people not to watch it. The original ending (spoilers) is darker than the movie: Luke is never turned back into a human but stays a mouse, fated to die in a couple of years due to a mouse’s short lifespan. But he celebrates this because he will die at the same time as his grandma, who only has a few years left to life in her old age. We never learn of Bruno’s fate, but it is speculated (half-seriously) his parents drowned him in a bucket of water.
@davelister29612 жыл бұрын
The most annoying thing about the Dahl with a megaphone story is that most people wouldn't've recognised him and would have just thought him some random nutter. Talent over fame, for sure.

Yeah. It's a bit of a shame that he was so grumpy, and had his name removed from the movie
@sethlong91182 жыл бұрын
Don't watch this movie, it's not for kids despite appearances, it's a miserable story about two children who have their lives robbed from them. Yeah I'm guessing a lot of people tuned him out, a fantastic writer who couldn't understand that changing the source material was necessary to create a kid's movie, as opposed to the Diary of Fievel mouskovits.
@robertgronewold33262 жыл бұрын
Just remember that Roald Dahl was quite an awful and cantankerous human being. His publisher dropped him because he kept sending dozens of hateful letters demanding that they give him a very specific type of pencil. He also serial cheated on his wife and was openly anti-sematic. It's a miracle his books managed to escape most of his terrible character traits, though he did have to change the Oompa Loompas into little orange men, as they were originally pigmy black people. The publisher couldn't let that little bit of racism through from the start.

I just realized that the Grand High Witch had to have thoroughly tested her potion, but she wasn't aware that the mice can talk, which means she's been transforming and immediately stomping children a LOT.
@MuljoStpho2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm... If my copy of the book was somewhere easy to get to I'd kinda want to check what that had to say about the invention of that potion. I seem to recall the book going into a lot of detail about the ingredients in the potion. (I think in the book she was just providing the recipe to them, not pre-made vials.) Lots of random objects were being used symbolically in it to channel the grand high witch's intentions into it. Specifically I remember an alarm clock being an ingredient, to create the timer from ingestion until the potion takes effect. I forget if any testing was mentioned in the book or if she just had faith in her genius potionmaking skills and expected it to meet expectations... Although it is named as the 86th version of the potion so that does suggest 85 failed attempts so she would've needed testing to know that it needed refinement all those times. Anyway, awfully short-sighted to only verify successful transformation and to not observe long term effects. They may be hoping that all the kids turned into mice just end up dead soon after, but they can't guarantee it. And it'd be wise for them to verify that the transformation won't reverse itself if the kid lives long enough as a mouse. (Sure we know from our outside perspective watching the movie or reading the book that it's permanent. But how can the witches be certain of that?)
@Palitato2 жыл бұрын
@@MuljoStpho Even if they did do any testing, would you want to be the mouse to reveal to the witch that you could talk? I think if I'd been turned into a mouse by a witch, I'd probably keep my mouth shut out of utter fear she'd do something even worse.

Ashleigh does some serious work for her viewers: crying, laughing and choking on spit, (almost) puking, fighting spiders, hugging beans, screaming in the dark... and I'm just member since June. Greetings from germany, we just had celebration of 33 years unity.

Yes, the weather is often overcast in Norway.... though the hotel is actually in England and not in Norway. The Grandmother's from Norway originally, but the family lives in England. (Roald Dahl's parents were from Norway, but he himself grew up in England, though he spent his childhood summers in Norway with his grandparents. Apparently, the grandmother in this story is based on Roald Dahl's own grandmother! ) ^_^

There was a remake of "the Witches"a year or so back and it wasn't nearly as good as this one! The original ending is that the boy and Grandma plan to spend the rest of their lives hunting witches and making the Formula to turn them into mice. The boy, even though he won't live that long given he is now a mouse, is glad he won't outlive his Grandmother. The animatronic mice of Luke and Bruno are so friggin' adorable! "You SQUASHED me!" XD

Fun fact: A few of the Monty Python cast are in drag in the witches meeting(including Michael Palin).

And the 2020 film kept the original ending of the book.

I remember seeing this as a kid. I love Roald Dahl stories. Roald Dahl was the original writer of great stories he never was credited on in movie adaptations. The differences between the original and remakes are best shown in the Wonka adaptations. This movie is fun and wasn't too scary for me.

Back in the 3rd grade, I had a fantastic teacher who read this book to us in class. She was a great story teller, and the book is fantastic, so I was riveted. Roald Dahl is so good at creating absolutely horrible characters.

Good at creating horrible characters, yes... it'd just be nice if most of those weren't the result of his own racism turned into cartoonish levels.

All my kids saw this when they were little. To this day, if anyone questions why I can't do something, I always loudly say "Vitches vurk only wiss magic!"

I thought I remembered the ending differently . . . but I might be misremembering the book by Roald Dhal, which I read to my kids when they were little. His books often had a certain darkness to them. The film version of Matilda is well worth a look and has Danny Devito in it.

Both the book, and the 2020 film is the original ending.

This is one of the only channels I watch where I can hear "Jesus Christ, Mr. Bean, that was a human at one point!" and not think anything was out of the ordinary. Keep up the great work Ashleigh!

Hairy Butt Chin I absolutely love this movie! Not so much of a scary movie. (Well, maybe for small children.) But, it's a lot of fun! The Witches (Anjelica Huston) makeup used to scare me a bit though. Loved your reaction for this video! Can't wait for the next!

Cucumber sandwiches are white bread with the crust cut off, then you spread butter on to slices of bread, put cucumbers on top of them, then sprinkle salt on both sides and close it. They strangly taste pretty good.

nice review. 1990 was a very long time ago. "The Witches" must have been hard to pull off but they did it. For such a seemingly lighthearted movie it does have some scary scenes. Imagery that kids would remember for years later. I think I was a little too old for this type of movie when it came out. It hits home much better with little kids. I enjoyed your review. Here are 3 films you might try : #1 a FistFul of Dollars #2 The Gate #3 Saw

Not the Hairy Butt Chin 😂 Of all the scary scenes in this movie, the painting freaked me out the most! I never looked at my mom's painting the same again. ( Always checking the windows in the painted house)

The kid who played Luke was in 3 huge movies and then just stopped acting. He was in 1. Parenthood ( one of my favorites!) 2. The Witches 3. Hook

The creepy skeleton toy that the kid has in his mouse cage is actually a ghost figure from the Real Ghostbusters toy line. They were figures based on a cartoon show that was based on the movies. It is fondly remembered by many 80’s kids like myself.

This movie was in my hey day. It didn't scare us kids, because we weren't so delicate and monitored as today. Being sent outdoors to roam the neighborhood and woods all day without supervision made each day an adventure.
