The Wolfe Tones aren't ashamed to support that resistance. More power to them. They finish the West Belfast festival every year and are a total sell out. People up here love them. ❤

No actually, a west Brit is an Irish person who completely disregards their own history to the point of idiocy then tries to criticise their *fellow countrymen and women* who were left to fend for themselves within a brutally sectarian statelet controlled by people they have zero experience of (Loyalists) Be honest with yourself, how many conversations have you ever had with a loyalist or Unionist? How much of what went on the the 6 counties do you know about? Seriously, what decent right thinking person could form the opinions west brits do given our long and bloody history with Britain? If you are a supporter of anything Britain did here and you call yourself an Irish person, then you are without doubt 100% a true blue west brit. Its as simple as that Its got fuck all to do with the IRA .

I remember this - at the time, Ireland really did want to move on and stop being reminded of the anger and violence of the North - it was raw and a little too soon - Gerry Adams was the leader of Sinn Fein at the time and he was, and still is very much a seriously decisive figure in Ireland. Many people were very much looking to the future and trying to, honestly, forget about the past. In 2023 I would absolutely support the Wolfe Tones message, it's greatly appreciated now, but back then, it did feel exhausting and exasperating to keep on about it. My honest appraisal.

I don't have a "dog in the hunt" so to speak, and I hope this would give an outsiders perspective to you guys. Going all the way back to the Anglo conquering of the Celts in the 12th century up until around 1922 when the Anglo-Irish Treaty went into effect gives a clear picture of why the Irish Catholics had enough by that time. When people are subjugated and oppressed for nearly 800 years it tends to give them a good idea about how they are valued by their ruling power. Since the late 1100s

@llokkee6 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right there rl2 Its disgusting for us up north to listen to these hypocritical morons point fingers and judge us for what they did themselves. How the hell do they think they aquired their cosy little free state? With the actions of the IRA! Idiots and morons. Its pure ignorance mostly but there are many people in the south who were enemies of the IRA from the civil war. Remember that, the Irish civil war was a bitterly fought conflict and Irish people have very long memories. The southern media are of course supporters of the status quo which suits many politicians and business men. The narrative in the south is one that promotes the false idea that Ireland somehow won the war of independence. This is so far from the truth when we look at what actually happened. The British divided the island against the wishes of the population through the threat of war. The men who acquiesced in the treaty became enemies of their former comrades in the IRA who wanted to fight on to free the entire island, not just the 26 counties of the Freestate. Those men and women who fought on are the direct predecessors of the Official IRA and the Provisional IRA The southern government have always been the enemies of the IRA. Whats sickening to us up north is when we hear some condescending moralising prick from the south attemtpting to lecture us about an issue they know nothing about. The main difference between the modern conflict up north and the war of independence down south was and is Loyalism. People down south have *No* idea what our experience was up here, nor do many of them care. Ultimately you are 100% correct, any southerner who labels our only defenders as terrorists yet praise the old IRA are ignorant and at times arrogant hypocrites. They sold us down the river then point a finger at us when we were left to defend ourselves by all and ay means necessary. .

Howdy from across the pond! Love this song, came across it while looking for material to use in a Research paper for a University History class. thank you for sharing. This is very very interesting.The political and social elites of The South had been shown up by The Republicans in The North. The Southern elites had sold out The North for their own comfy existence and The Troubles embarrassed The Government of The South and because The South had let this attitude spread The Republicans of The North had to protect themselves and fight a war anyway they could. Unfortunately if you don't learn from history then history repeats. It hurts me to say it,and I really didn't think I'd see it, but another group of Republicans have sold out those they were representing for a "comfy existence". There is still British Rule in Northern Ireland and it is enforced by once hardline Republicans.While there is still British rule and no matter who does the enforcing their will be a Republican Movement, no matter how small at times, bubbling away under the surface and waiting to reappear on a larger scale once the occupying forces do just one more thing that becomes the final straw that breaks the camels back.And the foolish Loyalists will still support the UK side despite The UK having also totally lied, and not shown any loyalty, to their own supporters.
@vulij16 жыл бұрын
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. They laid down their live's for political status and to further the Republican movement. Political volunteers like Bobby Sands MP have took Sinn Fein into the political mainstream and have brought us to the table wit the brit 'goverment/opressors' and unionists. We are on the brink, due to EU pressure at the lack of movement by the brits/unionist coalition, of a united Ireland. Our day is coming, and is very near.

Up to 1916 Ireland had tried, many different times, to rebel and break free of British rule and were unsuccessful. ..or the other was right. I'm just trying to explain that from an outside perspective, the Irish Republican desire for a free and independent country seems worthy of being fought for and won. Resistance is a messy business and people on both sides did what they had to do to get the desired result. SF and the IRA from 1916- 1921 roughly, couldn't have had better conditions to break from England and they did a masterful job of gaining support and making Brit gov rule nearly impossible. IMO
