What’s the “The Wolfman” movie about?
Lawrence Talbot's (Benicio Del Toro - who also starred in Sicario, Guardians of the Galaxy and Snatch) childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the sleepy Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor, he spent decades recovering and trying to forget. But when his brother's fiancée, Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt from A Quiet Place, The Devil Wears Prada and The Huntsman: Winter's War), tracks him down to help find her missing love, Talbot returns home to join the search. He reunites with his estranged father (Anthony Hopkins - who also starred in The Mask of Zorro, Silence of the Lambs and Meet Joe Black).
He learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers, and that a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named Abberline (Hugo Weaving) has come to investigate. As he pieces together the gory puzzle, he hears of an ancient curse that turns the afflicted into werewolves when the moon is full. Now, if he has any chance at ending the slaughter and protecting the woman he has grown to love, Talbot must destroy the vicious creature in the woods surrounding Blackmoor. But as he hunts for the nightmarish beast, a simple man with a tortured past will uncover a primal side to himself one he never imagined existed.

I will never understand why this was a box office 'bomb' and got slated by most of the so called critics. For me it was an extremely well made 're-make' of the original with a new twist and the CGI for Lawrence's transformations was up there with some of the best. The main acting performances were either good or very good and to mark down any film starring Sir Anthony Hopkins is bordering on sacrilege.

@@andycross9840 The problem was this movie went through 2 different directors, production delays & the cost soared & they had to reshoot a large part of it because of script changes. If the movie had a smoother production and didn't cost so much it could have been profitable. Also the extended version is better than the theatrical version. It got delayed and didn't come out when it was supposed to - also you can tell it is a mix of 2 different scripts - when Laurence comes home his father is standoffish and cold but protective of his son - then after Laurence is bitten - he is this calculating person who seems to enjoy being a werewolf and that he passed his curse onto his son. I love Anthony Hopkins performance - especially in the 2nd half of the movie where he is just evil and enjoys himself as he taunts his son - begging for that werewolf showdown.

They made a standalone sequel that had nothing to do with it aside from the werewolf theme and the budget was like a third of this. I think it was called Beasts Among Us or something like that

What is interesting with this version is how they honoured some of the more obscure aspects of werewolf lore. Like how Gwen was able to reach Lawrence - shown by the werewolf's eyes turning briefly back to Lawrence's human eyes - by calling his name three times. In werewolf lore if you do that you can reach the person trapped within the beast. Also even when it took over again Lawrence was able to restrain it just long enough for Gwen to kill him and free him from the curse.
