Really not comparable at all to a seven year (a small child) cheating at a board game played at home with family / friends. This is FAR more serious. There are far many more implications. It pushed one woman who actually ran the NYC race out of running for the Boston marathon. It was extremely immoral behavior. Seven year old’s, however, indeed lie & get frustrated with games. It may be annoying but natural & a lesson to teach not to lie.

Agreed. I want guilty people to get caught, but only after due process. I don't want anyone to be labelled guilty without enough evidence, no matter how guilty they are. And considering how much the justice system makes a mockery of "presumption of innocence", and outright encourages the general public to take that same attitude, I have deep respect for anyone who bucks that trend and tries to do these things properly. What I don't get about Ruiz is how could she not know about intervals and splits if she even did a modest amount of personal preparation for both the New York and Boston marathons. If indeed she was a runner in high school and had done running as an adult then she wasn't completely ignorant of running in general . Yet when she got interviewed by Kathryn Switzer after the race, she came off as if she knew nothing of running races. Something was deeply wrong with this woman.

We also need to remember, because it's easily forgotten: In 1980.. practically speaking... we didn't have cameras the way we use them today. Yes, obviously, cameras existed. But today, with digital, we use cameras to document everything and ANYTHING, without giving it a second thought. At this time, very, very few people had home video camcorders, or they may have had a Super 8 film camera. Either way, it was cumbersome, expensive, and actual time you had to film was very limited. We can assume a lot of people had film cameras for stills, but, same thing: people were choosy about what they took a picture of, because processing film was expensive. (Also, unlike today, most people DIDN'T have a camera on them) Nobody was wasting film on some rando giving up on the race part-way through. And, she probably jumped back in far too quickly for anyone to react with a camera. (And far back enough from the finish line that the news cameras didn't capture her) Obviously, today its completely different and trying to cheat this brazenly would be impossible, even without trackers. Hell, now we would expect surveillance cameras on the Metro. 🤳

@@Shalyn-ln9tu Yeah but there’s a difference between everyone finding out that cheating took place (smearing the name of the marathon) or not acknowledging it and a few people muttering “cheater” under their breath. Yet, I heard NO mention of the name of the REAL women's division winner of the 1980 Boston Marathon in the news reports I had watched. All they showed was Mlle. Gareau being crowned with the winner's laurels at a press conference WITHOUT stating her name. We became familiar faces and bodies pacing forward even crossing the finish line one after the other. I've ran over 13 marathons and 6 Boston's with my best time being 2:21:45 and it was hell to get my time this low. It was classic that she knew nothing about anyone she ran with or about running, clothing, shoes or training workouts.

After the New York marathon, she could have left it at that . Subsequently going on to Boston spoke volumes as to her flawed character. The credit card fraud was probably just the first time she was caught , her downward spiral started long before she ran any marathon.

I want to know how much planning went into it? Where exactly did she hop out of the race and why did she choose to hop out there? How did she navigate/travel so efficiently from where she hopped out/back in to the race? Did she carry money on her for rail/T fare? I’d love to hear theories on the finer details!

I started running at 300lbs. I lost 60lbs within my first year of running. I knew nothing about running and was slow. I was doing 21 minute miles. With strength training, weight lost and signing up for every 5k and 10k I could locally get and even running during pregnancy, I lost 80lbs, and got down to 12 minutes miles! I was training for a marathon after being a new mom and boom, leg injury. :(

I had a girlfriend who stole money from my wallet, lied about having a job, stole money from a shared account, etc. Never admitted one iota of it. Quite the opposite, she claimed it was the opposite way. She fooled many, including me, for about 4 years. But after that, everyone knew she was a cheater. That's the good thing about these complex-ridden pathological liars. They are always caught because lies pile up and break them
