Thelma came off as the stronger of the twins. She got a small scar from defying her mother; as a girl, Thelma secretly roller-skated. But Gloria (originally named Mercedes), also could show mettle. When their mother found out that the twins finagled their way onto the ship, Gloria pointed out, what if something happened to the ship and she and Thelma would be left as orphans? That did it. From then on, their mother decided it was better that the girls also come along.

The teddy bear that Thelma kept, was explained in her autobiography with her twin sister, Gloria. In the book, Double Exposure, Thelma said that she'd be late to meet the Prince and realized he'd be annoyed. While shopping at Harrods, Thelma lost track of time. On a sales table, were miniature teddy bears. As a peace offering, she bought a pink pair, and a green pair. She gave one pair to Edward, who was charmed. He proposed that they each swap a bear, so each person would always have something from the other person.
@weaviejeebies9 ай бұрын
I had no idea Thelma's mother was such a terrible person. The thing with the birds was sadistic. No wonder Gloria had trouble in her marriage leading to the custody dispute and younger Gloria had such a hard time with mental health. A sociopathic parent and grandparent doesn't just cause emotional trauma, they pass on genetic tendencies for emotional dysregulation that can be incredibly shameful for a person unaware of why they think and feel such things.
@afquan92119 ай бұрын
Laura Fitzpatrick was the daughter of a Union Army general who married a Chilean aristocrat. Her daughter, Gloria Morgan, theorized that the combination somehow didn't "fuse" into an emotionally stable personality. The mother was very volatile and overpowering. The story about the baby pigeons was that Laura believed they would bring bad luck to the household. After the baby pigeons were cooked, the butler Fernand, brought in the dinner plates with red eyes. He too, had cried over their being killed.

@novelist99 that's what I meant, I should've been more clear. It's not just the crappy parenting and the wounded souls that the children suffer. It's the genes that predispose a person to have unstable emotions and imbalanced neurological function. (My dad's a sociopath. Everything remotely emotional either seems to make me want to rage out or cry myself to sleep. My mood is relentlessly changeable. Bring happy is like being high on drugs. Being stressed out is being on the edge of a cliff. I used to think everyone had feelings like that, but no, mine are super intense and all over the place. I don't trust anyone, I have very little patience, I've got terrible ADHD.) It's not just from the abuse he doled out. I've had to get comfortable with the fact that my system is wired funny because 1/2 of my chromosomes came from a complete psycho. During the era we're talking about, they had no idea about any of this. At least I have the minimal comfort of knowing why I'm messed up.

I think many of the photos were of the identical twin, Gloria, who was the one who came off more as a lost, uncertain soul. Wistful. Thelma usually came off as more assertive and crisp. In some photos, if you look at the jewelry, you can tell who is who. After meeting Viscount Furness, Thelma got a double strand of black pearls which were the size of plover's eggs, according to her niece. The senior Gloria, meanwhile, had a favorite bracelet of open, rectangular links.

From Wikipedia: Final years edit Furness and her sister Gloria wrote a memoir called Double Exposure (1959).[1] Furness died in New York City on 29 January 1970. As her niece, Gloria Vanderbilt, recalled, "She dropped dead on Seventy-third and Lexington on her way to see the doctor. In her bag was this miniature teddy bear that the Prince of Wales had given her, years before, when she came to be with my mother at the custody trial, and it was worn down to the nub".[1][23] Furness was buried next to her twin sister, Gloria, in Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.[24]

Thank you. I like these straightforward short docs. You do a good job of giving the story in a short time with the pertinent facts. I've read a lot on Wallis, so Thelma figures in there. One thing I never understood is why any woman would ask another woman to " keep her man company" while she was gone. I mean....what? If my friend asked that of me she would scare me! 😮 Maybe that part was built upon just to add some splash to the story.

Both women had the same ultra-slim, androgynous look that Edward favoured. It's known that Edward was bisexual so these flatter chested women appealed to him.

She was a soul-less, selfish boor. Just like the crowd she mixed, with including Edward, they all used people and threw them out when finished. No respect, no self respect, no purpose in life except chasing their own elusive pleasures. Never knew that the two greatest pleasures are the ones that give personal satisfaction viz, 1. to achieve something worthwhile or 3. serve the community.

If you like the history of Edward and Wallis but want a comedic alternative to the story, try reading Laurie Graham’s Gone with the Windsors, it is narrated from one of her friends viewpoints and a good giggle.

Gloria Vanderbilt reunited with her mother later with the help of her last husband .. her mother was tragic and child-like (which is understandable )
@afquan92119 ай бұрын
Wyatt Cooper, Gloria Vanderbilt's final husband, was a wise man who commented that mother Gloria "never understood a single thing that happened in her life." This gave the grown up Gloria insight in her mother's vulnerability. Some 20 years earlier, when Gloria was married to Leopold Stowkowski, she was harsher towards her mother and cut off her allowance.
