technically she didn't have anything if you watch the movie in it's entirety..that's why she brings up how she stole a man's underwear and his vehicle..and that man had a wife!!! I have two different versions on DVD.

She had nothing which is why she ended up where she's at.

This was an absolutely stellar cast, and Jackee gave a superb performance as Etta Mae Johnson. A welcomed detour from Sandra Clark.

I read the book by Gloria Naylor. The film stayed pretty close to the characters in the book, but here, this was set in 1963, whereas the book was set in the early 80s, bc the gang member C.C. had a boom box with rap music playing on it., and Etta Mae wasn't as tall, she was a small, busty bowlegged woman, and the Cadillac she drove was pea green.
