The brother wasn't married. The brother was 12 or 13 ish. The "double love" of 'sister and wife' he referred to was implying that Anna was both sister and wife to him in his eyes.

Florence's shoulders must be sore from carrying these last two movies she's been in. It's giving me The Crucible meets Joan of Arc with Munchausen's. Lady Macbeth is a stellar film for anyone that hasn't watched it. Highly recommend.

Trust me @@Smoove_J it got worse when she pops up in Hawkeye. But she was great in A Good Person and the film itself is really great and made me respect Zach Braff (yes the dude from Scrubs directed it). When Pugh does films not slapped with the Marvel logo, she really shines. Her cooking clips are a high recommend too!

This film with it's religious questions brought to mind the A+ St. Maude for me. It decided to encompass "miracles" into stories we tell ourselves (the way I look at belief), rather than explain religious ecstasy as an energy that simulates orgasm. (We do see Maude, literally or figuratively, in air.) I like both so much. Add St. Maude to your list--you won't be sorry.

I agree with both of your ratings of it. I can honestly say what I liked about this movie is basically that the girl's life gets saved. I was very worried she was going to be killed off & it was a hard film for me. Basically the exploitation of this little girl & basically what she went through. To discover the beliefs behind why she was doing it & what her brother did. That she was sacrificing herself to save him within her beliefs. Just it was a trigger on some topics, but I felt so much relief when the little girl got saved & started her new life. However you do bring up good points about the ending for sure.

Re: hair in statue. Yep it was her brothers hair, I too thought it was a spell or something. Also, the mother definitely knew about her two kids, she mentioned that she wouldn't feed her daughter cause she wanted both her kids in heaven. That moment made me real uneasy.

My friend and I can up with an alternative twist… because it was during the famine, and there were a lot of unanswered questions about her brother, we thought the reason Anna wasn’t eating was because the family decided to kill him for his sin and save his body for food. Anna was not willing to eat her brother in the food served therefor went into fasting. So many signs led to this as the ending… they missed an opportunity there to make this truly a horror.

@@teachersparker I like that twist, could also be why Florence's boyfriends family locked barricaded themselves in.

SPOILERS AHEAD!... I think that visually it looked well, and the score (which is more sounds than music) is really interesting. I could see this score in a John Hillcoat film. Overall, I would agree that there were gaps in the narrative. The issue of how much the family knew about the abuse could have been explored further, but I would say that given the era, the family would not have ostracized the boy anyway, as they would have needed him to work on the farm. Also,. I don't think the brother was married, I think the "double love" was more brother and wife. I did have an issue with the casting of Niamh Algar. She seemed too old to be Anna's big sister. (I thought initially she was the mother's sister). In the end. I liked the way the film was wrrapped up. Lib and William had both lost their family, and Anna's family didn't value her, so for the three of them to start a new family together worked for me. I'd give it a 3 out of 5, for the look and for the way the story arcs of Anna and Lib were resolved. (And, as I'm Irish, I'm patrioticallly obliged to big the film up!!). 😁

I think you missed the biggest clue. Buried in the "boring" middle, The bird and cage spinner toy the reporter gave her. "Is it in or out" : is it caged or free? She was caged by her brothers incestuous feelings, caged by her mother's blame that it was her fault brother was in hell. Caged by the council members each with their own agendas. Caged by religion that she is the sinner that must pay with her prayers and fasting. Caged by the towns people that would shame her if they knew. Caged by the fame she was receiving and her family's love once she did start fasting. Caged by her mother feeding her like a bird to keep her alive. Then, at the end, caged as the daughter of the nurse who lost her own daughter. Was she ever free? We all have our stories that we tell ourselves. The nurse justified kidnapping a child to fulfill her own loss.

This movie was a good one! I really enjoyed this film, and although I agree that it lulled in the middle, I understood it to mean so much time had passed, and the backward-arse committee and the brainwashed zealot mother allowed her to wither, seeing the girl's life as a "sacrifice." What amazed me was the mother knew enough to sneak her food. Yet, allowing her to wither because her brother violated her. I was disgusted by the lot of them and their behavior and could not understand how the father appeared like a damn def mute with nothing intelligible to say except, she asked him to promise. The doctor, too, was an idiot. I was happy the nurse got her away from those freaks. Interestingly enough, the Nun was aware of the shenanigans but likely, out of fear, kept quiet.

I honestly just hated this movie. The film is mostly just watching Florence walk in on a dirt road, eat a bowl of rice, and listen to crazy people argue against common sense. It did illicit anger out of me because it was like, "fuck it just go home and fuck this entire backwater village." But the main character is a nurse who actually cares. The thing is the movie drags, and nothing impactful happens. Like I can't imagine this being anyone's favorite movie. Also this film is another one of those Netflix movies where the characters spend time just staring into blank space. I'm calling it the "Netflix stare." I saw it happen in Harrigan's phone, and some other film I can't be bothered to recall but it's where the main character just stares blankly at nothing and pretending to be deep in thought. The main character in this film legit burns down a house, and then she just....stares. It's meant to give a bit of intensity to the situation, but then she actually fucking burns herself because of it. I legit thought her burns were going to be used as a plot point, but it wasn't The village elders didn't even give a shit that she was hurtt, and even suspended her pay when she explains it was, "an accident." She didn't have to burn herself and even if she thought she needed to, she could have just burned herself downstairs instead of the second floor. I also don't understand the fourth wall break at the beginning and end. It legit adds nothing to the film. Reminding the audience that you're watching a film just comes off as pretentious. It wasn't a ground breaking thing like the Holy Mountain when being self-referential was a newish idea, it added nothing to the film. Overall the film was just boring and wastes your time. It's meant to serve as a period piece + psychological thriller, but it's not thrilling.
